@@uncannyx actually growing up after the first season. After the exellent "duet" in fact. Not actually being boring even in the first one which you are describing. Annoying at times, at best. Characters like spock are never truly boring either. They never work alone, they are there to be complemented by other characters. But tbh, i am not as fond of the original series as i am of ds9 and tng. But kira has far more going on than spock, its like you didnt pay attention to any character developpement.

Not too keen about Eddington and Kira. Maybe because I'm not that much a fan of the whole Maquis arc. Couldn't agree more with Garak ! A bit surprised Kirk and Seven of Nine aren't in there honestly...

+Sean V we were all surprised by the results. 4 of us listed our top 15 characters in order of preference. the highest scores of made it to the top ten. As far as I know one person put Eddington as their number 1 or 2, elevating him into the list. At the end of the day we could have done our top 50 best characters. lots of great characters in Star Trek (Shane)

I admit that I didn't like Kira at first, because she came across as a rude and abrasive jerk. But I came to, at the very least, appreciate her as time went on.

Wasn't big on Eddington or the maquis either, but I liked Kira and she wasn't maquis.

I am suprised Q wasn't on the list he is one of the best star trek villians. I love how he uses his god like powers to toy with the crew of the enterprise.

Other than the minor (and now corrected) typo, Darth Chocolate just summed up this video perfectly. The characters chosen and their order in the top 10 could be argued all day, but the descriptions were extremely well written. Insightful and entertaining.

I'm glad Robert Picardo's Doctor was on this list. The dude literally made Voyager watchable all by himself. Even when the writing failed miserably, he was still fun.

How easily DS9 and TNG outclassed every other Star trek.

Garak was the one character out of a million! Complex, intelligent, interesting and so well developed, it blew my mind! Andrew Robbinson's portrayal is beyond words!

I appreciate that you made some quite unexpected choices. It show these are really your favorites and not just catering to others. Also, the execution and the presentation of the video are very nice. The writing is good, too.

Honestly for me my favorite is Reginald Barclay. I know he appears little now and then but for me he is the most relatable. Trying to fit even with inherent defects, shortcomings both physically and socially but despite of this he is trying to contribute the best that he can not for himself but for others as we always do in society. He should be included because he is a star trek fan in a nutshell.

1. Spock 2. Data (Although I prefer Data's quest--to become more human--I find Spock's misguided ideal a moving reflection on the shortcomings of Vulcan logic.) 3. Picard 4. The Doctor (Ranks high because he made Voyager memorable.) 5. 7 of 9 (Same.) 6. Bones McCoy (My number one.) 7. Garak 8. Quark (DS9 gave much needed dimension to the Ferengi.) 9. O'brien (Star Trek benefits incredibly from an every man.) 10. Sh'ran (Combs's best Star Trek performance is actually Weyoun, but the vote's split because of Iggy Pop and the other Vorta.)

Overall I would have to go with Picard at number one, but Garak is still a great choice I can't argue with and was brilliantly acted. And that line about "you picked me because you knew I could do the things you couldn't" encapsulates the brilliance of the character.

Decent list. Though Spock should be much higher. Garak is easily one of my favorite characters of not just Trek, but all TV.

Apparently what sealed the deal for Robert Picardo was that he ended his audition ny improvising the line "And turn off my program before you leave. I'm a doctor, not a lightbulb." 😂😂💝❤️

Khan noonien Singh doesn't even get a mention? He only appeared twice but his impact was so enormous it shaped trek for years to come.

I would never say there was any instance where Kirk succeeded where Picard would have failed. At best, I can think of places where Picard would have handled a situation differently than Kirk.

Data is first in my heart.Picard second,the rest I agree But I would squeeze in 7 of 9 in there

He probably saw ds9 first when he was young. Having more than 3 seasons surely helps a lot to develop a character.

I was delighted by this list. Garak number #1? I'm on board with that!

If you get the chance, find the episode of LA Law in which Andrew Robinson plays a character with split personalities, one timid, one arrogant, and ultimately with an astonishing twist...

Kira and Eddington over Spock? They shouldn't even be on this list!

Not sure about Eddington and Kira, but very much agree with top 3! Shran and Garak are the best easily the best characters of their respected series.

This fresh, well written and edited review of Star Trek's great characters surprised me. I find myself agreeing and being convinced about these characters and great Trek moments. I think We'youn was combs' best character personally, and i totally agree with garak being number 1, DS9 is underrated imo, I dare to say it was better than next gen after the show found its own style.

A surprisingly good list and I applaud Shran and Garak.

I'm a doctor, not a counterinsurgent. Love it. Some unusual choices (no kirk, sisko, etc) but persuasive. You chose characters with depth (least for many) and I love Garak and DSN. I suspect many people will not be happy with your choices though.

Another really good star trek character from deep space nine is Nog. Because Nog was this teenage ferengi who acted exactly like any other typical ferengi during the first few seasons of DS9. And all of a sudden he turns from acting like your typical ferengi into a Starfleet cadet and eventually a starfleet officer later on in DS9. And therefore acts nothing like a typical ferengi during the last three to four seasons of DS9. Since Nog acted just like any other ferengi during the first few seasons of DS9 (unlike his father, Rom) Nog was the very last teenage character in star trek who I would expect of eventually joining starfleet.

Great job! I absolutely loved your description of each character. I didn't agree with everyone on the list, but that didn't matter in any way, this video was fun from beginning to end. There lies the beauty of the Stark Trek universe, everyone has their preferences, fondness, and love for certain characters, and there are definitely many to choose from given the rich history of this wonderful franchise. I would add Gul Dukat, played masterfully by Marc Alaimo.... also General Martok and Weyoun, played, of course by Jeffrey Combs who you mentioned in your video. He is such a great actor, I would probably watch an hour of him mowing his lawn. Thanks again for such a great video.

an interesting list... not the most popular or famous characters, but rather the most interesting and well written. Good idea.

My only complaint is Gul Dukat not making the list, but I do feel you did a good job explaining why each character was on the list.

I love you man. As I was watching this I was thinking to myself "Garak better be number 1 or this is crap". You did not disappoint.

Spock number 9? You have failed. Also, no Worf? Double fail. EDIT: now that I have been watching DS9 I have come to appreciate Garek a lot more. Damar too. I am a huge TNG fan, it's what got me into Star Trek when I was a boy in the 80s. DS9 is honestly the best series though. It has far more character development, and is far darker and more dramatic. Great show.

Yeah, there came a point where I had to admit to myself that DS9 is the better show overall. Best characters, fewest overused Star Trek tropes (prime directive, holodeck goes haywire episodes, etc.), a deliciously dark tone, the most consistent episode quality, and the war. Oh, my sweet Jesus the war. This was real tough for me to do as TNG exposed me to Trek and it's where I learned to love the franchise for it's message, it's characters, and it's interesting sci-fi story telling. But when I was really honest with myself, I realized that DS9 was not only the best Trek series, it was also my favorite. Any Trek fan who hasn't given DS9 a fair shot is doing themselves a disservice. By the way, Enterprise isn't that great but still gets too much shit. Voyager was TNG with a twist, and while it didn't push the franchise forward much, it was enjoyable and has more than a few real stand out episodes. TOS is kind of a train wreck. Just throwing that out there.

The life of a Star Trek Fan: Finding Star Trek - (Either TOS, TNG, or one of the movies): "Oh, this is a really fun sci fi show with some great dialogue and characters. Picard is so awesome, and Kirk is cool. I love Spock and Data! Troi so sexy!!" Becoming a fan - "Might as well see something new. Enterprise? Well that was pretty good. Voyager? OMG 7of9 is damn sexy and the Doctor is hilarious!! OH MAN BORG ALL THE TIME!! DS9... this is good but kind of slow." Becoming a Trekkie: "Am I going to watch 'In the Pale Moonlight' or 'Duet' for the 10th time this week? Decisions... Decisions..." tl;dr - There are two types of Trekkies: Those who think DS9 is the greatest, and people who haven't finished DS9 yet. :-P

A fantastic pick for number one. Garak was the most watchable character ever in Star Trek history for me, wonderfully played by the endlessly talented Andrew Robinson. His character inspired one of the greatest lines in the entire run of DS9 ''YOU BLEW UP YOUR OWN SHOP, GARAK!'' - I was geeking out over that one for days. If you ask me Eddington should be replaced with Quark, who for me is another of those characters that just lights up the screen every time. The quintessential Ferengi.

Nate Everts Quark was also a great character, but there were so many good characters from DS9 and it wouldn't be good to have half of the top 10 list be just from 1 series out of 5. I definitely wouldn't have picked Eddington to be on the list though.

I think DS9 had the best acting out of all of the series. It might just be great writers (the cast always gives the writers huge credit), but the actors make it real.

Might just be because DS9 is by far my favorite, okay, it has EVERYTHING to do with it, but my top 10 Star Trek characters list would probably only consist of DS9 characters, and Khan, with Garak, Nog, Miles O' Brian,The Sisko, and Odo making up my top 5.

Kind of surprised that Spock wasn't number one. Thought he might be beat out by fan favorites like Data, Picard, Worf and The Doctor. But by Will Riker? What the fuck?

I was irritated that Spock and Kira were so low on the list, and that Eddington was on it at all, but then you made Garak #1 and all was right in the wor-- um, universe.

Any list without Kirk and any other Captain is incomplete to say the least. Pleasantly surprised Shran & Kira were in there. Garek is my absolute favorite Trek character ever!!

I was actually searching for a video about top trek characters with the hopes of seeing Garak in it. There's still so much we don't know about this enigmatic being.

Always hard to tackle something so subjective as well as so personal for fans. Good job! I was pleasantly surprised. Lots left out... but there's only ten spots, so...

Spock = ICON that’s it in a nutshell. Half that list no one has ever even heard of unless they’re a die hard complete series Trek fan. Mr. Spock is the embodiment of Star Trek to the general population. That alone makes him the greatest character besides him being a fantastic Starfleet officer nuff said.

"I'm a doctor, not a hologram..." I shouldn't have to explain why Dr. McCoy is my all-time favorite Star Trek character. Still, when considering all the franchise's great characters, I would have been happy if he was included anywhere in the Top 5.

I love your list and totally agree with Garak as no. 1. He is a multi-layered, multi-faceted character matched by Robin Lord Taylor's Oswald Cobblepot.

All of these are good characters, but half of them aren't all that special. Where's Q, Seven of Nine, Dax, Quark, Tom Paris, and, well, all of the real *sci-fi* or really fun characters? And in terms of a character who's relatable and "human," I'd put B'Elanna Torres as #1.

Really, you can't choose just ten best characters for this tremendous franchise. You at least have to narrow it to leads, recurring, guests, villains, etc. To leave out any does a disservice to these great series. Leads: 1. Spock 2. Picard 3. Data 4. Kirk 5. Uhura 6. Garak 7. Glad to see Major Kira getting some love for the complex, contradictory, yet believable character she is. I wish Sisko made the list, and also Odo, but I understand you need to leave some room for characters from the other Treks.

Great list.

Really, a good list. You make your choices well. I think, along with others, while Eddington was a good character, he was too glib, too forced and felt too naive to really play a double agent. His "Jean Valjean" vs Sisko's "Javert" would have been an interesting episode if it weren't so over the top. There are many people in the Trek Universe I would have chosen over Eddington, including Sarek, Seven of Nine, Captain Kirk (the official "Horatio Hornblower" of the series) or even Captain Janeway.

Garak makes all episodes with him unpredictable. He also created mystery and interesting. It was very funny when he was playing games especially with doctor Bashir and Quark.

Yeah, this is a pretty good list. Disappointed with the lack of Gul Dukat but otherwise I mostly agree with the list. Controversial I guess but Q is one of my absolute favorite trek characters. While silly and used as comic relief in far too many episodes john de lancie's performance is just mesmerizing and his interplay with Picard is a definite ST highlight for me.

Love your number 1, and love The Doctor being on the list...he was the only thing that made Voyager watchable (to the extent it was ever watchable at all).

So many good characters in Star Trek, but the ones you chose are great choices. Surprised no Gul Dukat, but I'm glad you included Thy'lek Shran. However, Garak will always be number 1. He's so... deviously good.

Data, Guinan, Spock, Garak, Odo, The Doctor, Dr. Phlox, Shran, Seven of Nine, Geordi, Picard, Quark, O'Brian, Bashir and both Daxes are my favorites. I seem to be drawn to the loner characters that have a deep pain/vulnerability.

While watching reruns -- Garak is one of the few characters I remember by what he did. Glad he's number 1.

While I might get picky about some of these it's nice to see the Kirk-Spock-McCoy triumvirate not get treated as holy writ. Also, I admire your balls for including an ENTERPRISE character so high on the list. I'm with you, both for Shran as a character & the series. I like it more than most people. And I agree with you whole heartedly about Garak. DS9 has become my favorite of the later series & he's a big part of the reason why. The scene in which he & Quark discuss the Federation over a glass of root beer is one of the best scenes ever written for any of the series. Though I suspect having two major characters speaking in such un-glowing terms about the Federation would probably have killed Gene Roddenberry. Were he not... you know... already dead.

Truly interesting picks, I can’t dispute any in particular, the ST universe is replete with great characters. The only comment I have is that Barclay and Quark would be welcome among these ranks.
