While it's true you'll gain a special appreciation for music because you were there when it came out, I think younger people can find appreciation for it in their own way. I'm a 20-year-old guy that listens to a lot of rock, especially from the late 60s and early 70s. I wasn't there when it was released. I've never heard it being played on the radio or had friends recommend it to me. What makes it unique to me is that I discovered it by myself. I remember distinctly how I watched a live performance of Led Zeppelin on youtube when I was 14, and it absolutely blew me away. I remember questioning myself, "where has this type of music been all my life?". Since then, I've used the internet to find the music I enjoy, using everything from music-streaming services to forums and youtube channels. And that's what brought me to this channel! I would just like to thank you for the content you make. It has given me so much music to explore and made me see it from a perspective I never would've otherwise. Cheers!

I was just playing Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1984) and I think that was the Swan Song for Heavy Metal itself. That was September 1984 and while cutting edge at the time was obsolete by January 1985 when Ride the Lightning took the world by storm and Thrash Metal took over.

Yeah man! That's a thoughtful list...I think that the only band that we would share on our top 10 bands list would be The Doors: The Doors. I wore the cassette tape out of my first copy of it. That was a brilliant album. The Who: Who's Next is fantastic too....as is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Other than their hits, the band you've listed that I'm least familiar with would be Boston. I really don't know a lot by that band.

If you love sticky fingers then you need to listen to teenage head by the flamin groovies. Mick was on record stating that teenage head is better than sticky. Came out in 1971 and to me, I like head slightly better due to the punk edge it has over sticky. Anyway, check it out now. You will be thankful

I'm 21 and I can't help but feel Martin is a little disconnected. The hits from that album (which is most of it) still get played all the time and most people my age know and like those songs. The most common band T-shirt to see at my university is Led Zeppelin, easily. I don't really have a source for this but I'm pretty confident that music from the 70s is way more popular today than music from the 20s was in the 70s. Nobody my age finds rock music unfamiliar, despite the popularity of other stuff.

  • @jpmcmullan8666

@@dremoralorde5215 I think it’s unfair to expect Martin to be connected with people our age. There’s probably too few that he interacts with. You are right about music in the 70s being more popular today than music from the 20s was in the 70s, but that’s because of accessibility and exposure due to technology. You can’t buy your groceries without hearing Zeppelin. People in the 70s weren’t listening to the Duke while they shopped for groceries. None of my friends find radio-“Dad Rock” or “Arena Rock” unfamiliar, but when I rip out some Rush, Savatage, Steve Vai or even anything off Thunder and Lightening people are shocked.

@@MartinPopoff I had always neglected Give Em Enough Rope, I always thought it was more or less The Clash part 2 but not quite as good and with less punk fury. I even listened to Sandinista more often. Thanks to your high ranking that has changed since yesterday, I really enjoyed my first couple of spins. Also listened to These Trails which I really like. Looking forward to The Chameleons and the Waterboys, as well as Scary Monsters, which are all new to me.

I've got friends and family who would look at me like I'm crazy for listening to two guys I don't know talk about what their favorite albums are. Or whatever the subjective topic that's being covered. But I learn a lot about bands I'm either unaware of, or ones I might've brushed off back in the day and never dug deeper into. It helps that Pete and Martin are not just a wealth of information, but, in my opinion, humble and good natured about what they share.

@@beetlebum7760 Honestly I feel like "Pet Sounds" should be in any music lover's top 10. Brian imo stands in the tradition of the great arrangers at Capitol of the 50s like Gordon Jenkins or Nelson Riddle, but he took it in a totally new direction, when he married the orchestral and big band palette of the 50s with the sound and instrumentarium of the surf bands of the early 60s, then added a bit of Spectoresque production and topped it all off with those Barbershop inspired vocal harmonies, that highlighted the once in a lifetime gorgeous vocal blend of his bros and company. That's just such a super cool eclectic combination of styles, just as cool and eclectic as the combination of instruments he used liked bowed double bass and electric bass, or organ and accordion, or harpsichord and ukulele, etc... And I haven't even mentioned yet his gifts as a song composer and writer of melody. No wonder Macca calls "Pet Sounds" his favourite album ever.

Some favorites of mine: Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime Rush - Moving Pictures Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 (I agree, Pete, I feel alone on this) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Boston - Debut album Megadeth - Rust in Peace Van Halen - Debut album Iron Maiden - Powerslave Judas Priest - Stained Class Rainbow - Long Live Rock 'N' Roll I do like Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King and Gutter Ballet. Savatage is easily the most underrated metal band. I'm sure I can iron the top 10 when I get a chance.

My top 10 has a few contrarian picks but here we go: 10 - UFO - Phenomenon (1974) - With all the great 70s records that I enjoy I think it's making a statement when over time this can be paired up against anything as one of the best of the decade. Borderline metal with some folk-ish rhythm playing and melodic shred from Schenker that ages incredibly well... The vibes from this album take you from corn fields to dark caverns... 9 - Whitesnake - Slip of the Tongue (1989) - A criticized album for Steve Vai's bombastic playing but a childhood favorite for me. I quite enjoy his playing, full of imagination and detail, sound effects and improvised fills... I also like the kind of subtle orchestra qualities and the songwriting in general. Great performance by Coverdale and I feel like hearing this on any rainy day. 8 - Rush - Caress of Steel (1975) - Lots of good things to say, but in a nutshell I like the pacing, the prog story-telling aspect and Alex Lifeson's work here even more so than normal, considering several Rush albums are just about equally good. 7 - Dokken - Back for the Attack (1987) - George Lynch is a top 5 guitarist and very influential for me. I've talked before about the song variety, the bass mix, the sheer amount of guitar fills and outros, not to mention some of my favorite guitar sounds ever. Total Lynch overkill!! It's probably one of the best lengthy albums of its time as well... 6 - Metallica - Ride the Lightning (1984) - To me the first thrash album that elevated the genre with style; the first time a group of people went more extreme than classic metal without losing finesse in my opinion. This was the prime of Metallica working their songs rather than procrastinating them... The opener is jaw-dropping when you first hear it and the title track is my favorite Metallica song. Songs like Escape are quite fun for me, they make the record lively. 5 - Megadeth - Peace Sells (1986) - This one always fascinated me for the sheer amount of musical content compressed into a little more than half an hour. It's a quick roller coaster ride that'll get you wanting to revisit it all the time. Riff machine, with Chris Poland's unique style as an added bonus and probably a good chunk of Mustaine's best solos. Wake Up Dead is probably a top 5 opener. 4 - Van Halen - 5150 (1986) - This one's controversial for the Van Hagar haters, but this is an album from a top 3 favorite band with arguably my favorite songs. Insane and under-appreciated riffing from Eddie and drumming from Alex. Any other band doing this and it might have been called a best-ever hard rock debut, fm radio masterpiece or borderline prog (see the title track). Plus, it's Eddie. 3 - Judas Priest - Stained Class (1978) - The definitive classic metal album. Beyond the Realms of Death is the metal ballad on which all metal ballads seem to come from. Not gonna go off about every track, but let's just say that it's timeless because if you down-tune every song and produce them to modern standards, it's still one of the most metal things ever because of every little progression and note choice. Highly intellectual. 2 - Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith (1984) - I don't listen to this everyday but I definitely could. It's the relentlessness of JP's 80s period, with a darker atmosphere and classical music- inspired bits everywhere. Glenn and KK give everyone their fill with some of the best dual lead guitar work. A few of my favorite Priest tracks here- particularly on side one, and honestly side two just gets better with time. Defenders can also be considered an early percursor to the savage Pain Killer album, you can hear bits of that all over the place. 1- Pantera - Cowboys from Hell (1990) - This is the album that definitively made me want to actually grind to learn guitar. An easy #1 for me because previous ones may be perfect albums, but to me this is a perfect album and a half. My least favorites could make half a perfect album, no joke. Solos that I've gotten chills from, riffing that combines thrash with an almost Diary of a Madman-ish classic metal and massively overlooked drumming from Vinnie Paul are just a few qualities. The drum sound is brutal and the fills seem like something that should be talked about more often... I love every Pantera album but this sounds more like a deliberate masterpiece than all of the other ones...

Good to see Long Live Rock and Roll over Rising. I always preferred it. Came very close to my picks. Kill the King alone is worth the admission

Interesting show, as always. A lot of great picks, and Martin's as always are sometimes unexpected. About a year ago I did something similar to this, where I made up a list and series of reviews called "38 Albums That Changed My Life." These are not necessarily my favourite albums by each band or artist, but the ones which had a great impact on me when I was growing up, for various reasons. So here is the list - AC/DC - Highway To Hell, Al Stewart - Past, Present & Future, Alan Parsons Project - Tales Of Mystery & Imagination, Alice Cooper - Love It To Death, Ambrosia - Ambrosia, Beatles - Rubber Soul, Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Blind Faith - Blind Faith, Blue Oyster Cult - Blue Oyster Cult, Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run, Cat Stevens - Tea For The Tillerman, Cream - Disraeli Gears, David Bowie - Aladdin Sane, Deep Purple - Deep Purple, Edward Bear - Bearings, Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection, Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief, Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees, Gordon Lightfoot - Did She Mention My Name, Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow, Killing Joke - Killing Joke, Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin 2, Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs, Max Webster - Max Webster, Moody Blues - On The Threshold Of A Dream, Nick Drake - Bryter Layter, Pink Floyd - Meddle, Queen - Queen 1, Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails, The Ramones - Ramones, Roxy Music - Country Life, Strawbs - Hero & Heroine, The Doors - The Doors, The Runaways - The Runaways, The Ventures - Play Telstar, Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything, Wishbone Ash - Argus, Yes - Fragile.
