The philips 80C31 are standard microcontrollers, originally from intel (MCS-51 family). They don't have a rom and are just running whatever is burned into the EPROM next to it. The ULN series are mostly darlington transistor arrays for driving higher power stuff from low current logic. Fun video, thanks!

Ron the Darlington in simplest terms is a transistor. The chip is called Darlington array .....fancy way of saying heap( of 8) in a box. This can be used to allow 5 v signals from computer bits , to talk to the ( say) 28V motors or solenoids. I

We had one of those at a godfathers pizza right next to a sunset riders game. We would put 1 song for hours and thought it was hilarious 😂

At one of the places I operated jukeboxes at there was this one dude who always wanted free credits, I'd give them to him and he'd play 20 minute long James Brown songs over and over again, lol. GET READY.... FOR DA BIG PAY BACK!!!

uln2003 its a transistor array (darlington pair) so it can switch leds, relay coils etc from logic level input, they blow easy if you got a bad relay or coil etc.

Thanks for raising awareness about the gas shocks, Ron! People usually ignore them and end up badly hurt when they fail. My dad got a broken nose years ago when it failed on the hatch of his Ford Escort :(

One of my employees got nailed by an American Changer. It had the gas shock holding the top up, and I warned 'em that he would need to use the prop rod. He ignored the prop rod and jammed a coin box in the lid. Once the changer figured he was leaning into it- The box shot out and the lid (probably 15lbs) clocked 'em right in the back of his noggin. He was actually treated for a minor concussion. (The company ensured he was taken care of 100%.)

Enjoying your videos-I used to fix Rowe Ami, NSM and Wurlitzer but back in the old days of vinyl but mostly on site it was panel swapping although most faults were coin jams, record jams or wiring issues-never got to do component level so finding this interesting

pin 8 of the ULN2003 is indeed ground, but they probably isolate ground on different pins of the power connector to prevent noise from the motors and such getting in and crashing the CPU. The stuff you saw on pin 8 is called a thermal relief; it makes it easier to solder the pin, so that the copper ground plane in the board won't suck the heat out and cause a cold joint. The 80C31 is an 8 bit microcontroller and is pretty common. The 74HC574 is an 8 bit latch, and seems to be connected to the ULN2003's, so when the 2003 smoked, it most likely did in the '574.

I got that one fixed up and modded to be able to be able to play MAME arcade ROMS. It's pretty sweet. An IC is a combination of everything. Integrated Circuits are basically a complete circuit, but microscopic. They often contain multiple transistors, capacitors, resistors, inductors all on a microscopic level. In this case, the ULN2003A is a Darlington Transistor array, NPN about 50Volts, 1000hFE. So in this case, the chip is a few transistors in a chip, pretty high gain transistors too. I guess you could look at them similar to the transistors on a Bally Solenoid board, but a few of them all in one little chip.

8031 is some standard microcontroller. The ULN2003 is used on some pinball machines, maybe that's why you had some in stock.

Yep, transistors and chips make the same smell when toasted. ICs are just a complex combination of almost unfathomably small capacitors, resistors and transistors so their behavior can vary quite differently from one another especially in the early days. Some will just catch fire if they're powered while unloaded

Shaking this CD jukebox would have me thinking about the daggers on the door. A thought that would be on my mind before the door fell and impaled my head with a 2” spike.

This one still has some sort of checksum error but it plays fine so not sure what that is....

the board with the coils looks to be a crossover network. uln2003a is an array of 7 NPN darlington transistors. NPN... Negative positive negative. made by Texas Instruments

80 C 51 = 80 C 31 but with internal ROM. Ordered factory programmed saves board area in hi volume boards...you have the 80C31. Simple micro processor.

Hey man. Pretty sure those gas struts were never supposed to lift the lid only take the weight and make it a little easier. You can buy a special ROWE AMI plastic cover to lock the struts out, which is effectively what that pipes doing anyway. I’m sure it’s mentioned in TNT video.

When I used to operate them some of the rock olas would hold themselves up but we didn't operate many rowes at the company I worked at so I don't remember for sure...

What's up with the Seeburg DS160 (or DS100) briefly visible at 19:40? Is that the one you were messing with awhile back getting the Tormat unit working? Was that one of those rare videos where you put up part one but didn't get it working and didn't put up the second video? I was hoping to see your results for when I finally get my DS100 down here from Pennsylvania and get into its selection mechanism. Though I'm sure that a lot of its issues are just old ass caps.

At least it been updated to a pro 12 player and new basket

Yup they had kept it up to date it seems like...

Only one part with a smoking hole in it ? TV I'm fixing, has two ICs like that, as voltage regulators don't usually hold suicide pacts there is a 3rd charred part in the PSU. Two shorted capacitors, one which which looks like it's been on fire. So yeah, 9v into regulators that only take 5.5V max. $80 to buy replacement PCBs, $1.40 for replacement chips, once I found some actually in stock. At the moment even brand new parts that are still made can be hard to find.

We ended up trying to use that same crap that you fix the window defrosters with, on the dart board membranes.... I'm using more auto parts than arcade parts anymore :)

that chip probably controls several lines, maybe you can tell which one burned out the chip- could also be one of those little darlington pairs just failed on its own

I have rowe too with the problem with mech board. First there was a RAM fault. I changed 6116 which is RAM memory. After that RAM error went away and it gave 05-62, which is CDM communication error. Then I also replaced the microcircuits U2 and U3, which communicate between the mech board microprocessor and the CDM. Still the same problem, the board error light stays on after the second flash and the CDM COMM light stays on, flashing about every second. Jukebox not working. There are also no error messages anymore. Then when I changed another MECHANISM CONTROL BOARD and I used the same CD Player cable, with that the jukebox works fine. I also measured that the CDM receives +5V and +9V voltages. Is the next processor to be replaced, U4(8031)? Or where could it be wrong? I looked at the wiring diagram that the U2 and U3 circuits are the only ones between the processor and the CDM... Or what stops the MECH BOARD after the second led flashes. The manual doesn't say anything about that. The MECH BOARD should blink three times for it to turn on, right? I tested with an intact MECH BOARD so that I put only the power connector on it, after which the board error flashes three times and after that the SCAN/TRANS light stays on. The broken board, on the other hand, flashes only twice and BOARD ERROR stays on after the second flash and CDM COMM stays on. What is wrong with that board?

6:28 dude that board is a cross over it's for separate frequencies, i mean one connection goes to the woofers or subwoofers and the other for the mids and highs it's simple but funcional and actually the new speakers comes with one of this thingies inside

@@LyonsArcade yeah but it's just the aparece maybe, the good stuff is in the inductors, if these are made with good high quality copper the quality of the x-over going to be superB or maybe it's just like that for the power of the amplifier, who i think is an AB class amp or mosfet class D, who knows

you have to take those "blank" CDs out that are rotating now on the display, and see what's on them.

@@LyonsArcade yeah they did... I am very curious what's on them, if anything. lol. radio shack used to sell CD desk clocks with similar blank CDs, and I was always curious what was on those. I suspect they are defective discs or overruns, so there could be anything on them

The mechanism control computer is blowing smoke... takes unit out... It's _literally called_ the Mechanism Control Computer. O_o The designer of these was not very imaginative I guess...

RE: Chips ULN series chips are custom application-specific transistor arrays. Typical types are for matched transistor arrays and (high voltage) drivers eg. for driving a VFD or, in your case, providing a "high current" voltage sink like an open collector invertor but sinks more current than a normal invertor. Careful using sockets for it as there may be more current going through the socket than you normally expect, don't use a cheap socket. The 80C31 is an NXP (re Phillips) part that is their version of an Intel 80C51 (8051) micro-controller. So that's likely the brains of the controller. 8051 uC's are really old controllers going back to the beginning of 1980 but is still in-use in new designs even today. I used one in a product I designed many years ago. RE: AC Motors Windings DC resistance will be low. These motors run of 50/60 cycle AC and so to really get an idea of the winding resistance (or impedance really) one would have to run a low voltage AC through it via a divider network and measure the AC voltage drop across it (and possibly the current going through it, depending on the test setup) and determine the impedance. Or just hit it with full power and see if it smokes. :D Cheers,

Thanks Eddy, I’ll bet the reason I already had those 2003’s is because I needed them for a display now that you mention it. I’ve worked on some of the rock ola displays in the past....

“I’m YOUNG”… are you sure about that? I’m fairly young and I still wouldn’t want to be impaled by a jukebox door.
