Our Route To Conquer CAPE HORN Under Sail Revealed [Ep. 106]
We finally reveal a big secret, the route we will take to sail around Cape Horn! Will we conquer sailing's Mt. Everest the hard way? Find out how we do it in this episode!
#sailing #reallife #adventure #expedition
About Us:
We are two young racing sailors that decided to leave life on land and accomplish our goals of sailing around the world and learning about and experiencing different cultures. Originally from the Great Lakes, we left Newport Rhode Island in July of 2019 after refitting our boat DIY style. We then sailed to Maine, and from there down the East Coast of the USA, around Cape Hatteras, to the Bahamas, Back to Miami, and then to the Virgin Islands.
From there we headed south to Grenada to escape hurricane season, then back up to St. Maarten where we launched our first Atlantic Crossing to Horta, Azores. We made a quick trip back to the USA in July of '21 to defend our Chicago - Mackinac Race overall title, then it was back to cruising the Canaries, where we launched for our second Transatlantic voyage, sailing to Brazil in South America and on to Uruguay.
Now we are rounding the tip of South America in the dangerous waters of the Le Maire Straights, where boats are known to be rolled and sunk in the huge waves and dangerous currents flowing up from Antarctica, the Southern Ocean, and around the infamous Cabo de Hornos!
Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is where we are headed now. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile.
About Our Boat:
We have classic sailing yacht, a J Boats J/46. Like the newer J/45, she is a performance cruiser that can get up and go but is also very comfortable offshore in bluewater. She is faster than most similar sized sailing catamarans and lots of fun to sail, you will surely spill your tea at sea though! She is made of fiberglass and sports a nice wood interior and her interior design is a little less like Ikea than a similar sized Beneteau or Lagoon. She sports a high tech sailing electronics package, the best navigation software, and is set up for off the grid living with a watermaker, lithium batteries, and solar panels and a wind generator.

Thanks for taking us all along! We are all living vicariously through your adventures. Who knew there was a yacht club way down there? And super mercados, too! Hi guys, first of all ¡Congratulations! 💯🌎 I hope that they are already advanced in the Pacific Ocean. I was observing the weather in the southern region and it does not look promising, I think that Captain Curtis will take the leg to the north bordering the Chilean coast, there they will have strong winds but from the stern, arriving at Puerto Mont they will have snowfall, good luck and good winds. a little bone to Roxy

Such an aweome region to explore, particularly through the lens of such nice wonderful sailors. Refreshing to hear of a straightfoward check ins, it's shocking how overbearing it can be in other locations, there must be better ways globally. I love how the Ruca (J45) has some smaller sisterships in Puerto Williams in the form of a fleet of J24's! I love how Roxy relishes the olfactory voyage, reminds of dog sailing memories. Despite the sad loss of your drone and camera, I hope you are able to gather lots of footage and sound, perhaps future uses could be some ASMR. Looking forward to you rounding of Cape Horn.

Love the ides of ASMR! We will have to give that a try! Thanks for the kind words 🥰 It was really fun to see the J24s. Hopefully we can get some footage of one sailing! Roxy loves the cows and horses and loves making friends with everyone.
Really enjoying watching your fantastic voyage. You guys really need a folding cart with wheels to put in the dinghy for your fuel cans and groceries. ;)

Wonderful video that brings back many memories of my sail into Puerto Williams in 2002. The yacht club was the last place to get a shower before crossing the Drake and getting back 26 days later. The Club is a classic, glad to see it in such good shape. Hope it is not "gone before long" but believe it is still sitting aground.

When you saw that flag did you think, whoops this is Texas? The Chile flag actually predates TX & is slightly different. The experts think TX had no idea Chile had a similar flag when making theirs. Nice Yacht Club, I sailed a few with the old style wheel & big deviation adjustment balls.

Curious as to the origin of the name Sweet Ruca. In Southern California Spanish slang it is a term for woman, usually translated as "chick."
@SailingSweetRuca
Жыл бұрын
Ding Ding Ding! You are the first one to guess the origin of the name. It originally comes from a Sublime song "Waiting on my Ruca". There is a short write up on our blog. There's a longer story to it than this, but you can enjoy the read here: sweetruca.com/whats-in-the-name/#:~:text=So%2C%20in%20short%2C%20the%20name,but%20so%20is%20the%20yacht.

Okay, you didn’t really crossed cape horn. That is cheating. Truly crossing cape Horn means crossing parallel 55S on the Pacific side.
@SailingSweetRuca
Жыл бұрын
Where do the rules say that?
@ericshayer
Жыл бұрын
There are no rule, of course, but for most sailors “crossing cape horn” means passing from one ocean to another, not going around the island, and you probably know that. Anyway, there is no demerit doing what you did, it would be just more elegant to be clear about it. For those who were following you it was a kind of anti-climax. So long trip expecting to cross cape horn, and then you just turn around and come back….
Something about The Yelcho, a prow monument in Puerto Williams. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yelcho_(1906). Tells you a lot about a good chilean sailors are.
Great to Roxy in good form and on dry land.
