I think he just was being the typical man hoe for a while. He still treated Alissa badly but she also had a role in all of it. It was just a toxic situation and both of them were wrong at some points. Those kind of situations are the ones that need to just be let go of and moved past. Two people can be bad together but still not be terrible people as individuals. I think people who are emotionally mature understand this.
