Ойын-сауық

We are a Married Thai-Canadian Couple reacting to everything Sweden has to offer!
In 1628, the Swedish warship Vasa, sank to the bottom of Stockholm Harbour on her maiden voyage. 330 years later in 1956, the Vasa was found and raised by Anders Franzen.
The Vasa was vitually intact, a perfect time capsule.

I've been to the Wasa Museum 4 times and I wish to go more. It's amazing to see the ship up close. I live about 80 km north of Stockholm.

FYI. One of the two captains onboard Vasa, Söfring Hansson, managed to swim to safety and went to one of the pubs in whats now called "Gamla Stan" (old town). There he drink himself drunk, mourning the loss of his ship. The name of the place was called Zum Fransicaner, a German beer house. It is to note that the same pub is still in operation and even at exactly the same place, 396 years later. Many in the crew however wasn't that lucky so they went down with the ship. It is also to note that since it was Vasa's maiden voyage, it had a lot more people onboard than the standard crew since many of the crews families were aloud onboard, hence they found both women and children among the dead that wasn't part of the crew.

The builders could see the future. There was a statue of a runner on board - 300 years before he made his record run.

Denmark and Sweden have a sad record. We are the two countries who have been to war with each other the most in world history. You would think it's the French and the British, but sadly, it's us here in Scandinavia.

The ship was misdesigned after the king requested changes from the original blueprint. After the ship left the port of Stockholm, a salute was fired as it was the ship's first voyage (maiden voyage). A strong gust caused the ship to list and as the salute had just been fired the gun ports were open where water poured in causing the ship to sink.

The Vasa is adorned with symbols of the Swedish Royal family and would have functioned as a big-budget ad campaign of the 17th-century Sweden, and the ambition King Gustavus Adolphus. The animal depicted is a lion, and is a part of Sweden's state coat of arms, and is a very old symbol of Swedish royalty. The king who commissioned the Vasa, Gustavus Adolphus (Gustaf Adolf II), later became known as "The lion from the North" during his campaign in the German states (part of the Holy Roman Empire), where he was hailed as the champion of the Protestant cause during the 30-years War. The king's nickname came from an old German prophesy, which went something along the lines of "A golden lion from the north will defeat the eagle" - the Eagle referring to the Holy Roman State. The propaganda gains were of course too good to pass up, so the king himself made sure to spread the name far and wide. Gustavus Adolphus is also commonly referred to as the father of modern warfare, as his tactics and reforms influenced militaries all over Europe. The king was all that, but not a very good ship designer :)

The ship was too heavy on top, above the water line. Then it came a strong wind that turn the ship to one side and the water poured in through the cannon hatches that were open.

It capsized and sank south of Beckholmen on its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. The ship was poorly designed; the underwater body was too small and the ballast insufficient in relation to the rigging, guns and above-water hull.

Gustavus Adolphus (Gustaf the second Adolf) is considered the father of mothern warfare. He was quite successful in the 30 years war between protestants and catholics in mainland Europe. About 30 people died, so most of the crew and their families survived. There's a myth about the problem with the ship was too many cannons, but in reality it was just constructed with too much space above the waterline

The Vasa sank in water that was shallower than its height, so the masts were sticking out of the water. SInce that made Vasa a sailing hazard, the masts were cut down, which is why she was eventually forgotten. Anders Franzén found her by relying on a bit of luck, and thorough research. He read as many old documents about the Vasa as he could find, to try to pinpoint its position. He also had a device he could drop to the bottom to retrieve samples of the bottom, and used that from his tiny rowing boat over the spots where he believed that the Vasa might be. One day his little device came up with a tiny bit of black oak (oak that has been submergedunder water for centuries becomes black, and is a very sought after type of wood) in it. He knew he might have found her, so he got in a bunch of divers to investigate, and they saw that there was indeed a huge ship there. There was actually another warship wreck that was said to have been in even better condition, but in the 1920s it was dynamited to get that valuable black oak. For example, Stockholm city hall has doors that are made of the black oak from that ship.

You could call her the first of her kind. They attempted to build a new type of military vessel. At the time, most naval combat focused on getting close to enemy ships for boarding. However, the Swedish king wanted to change that. He envisioned ships with more cannons that would function primarily as artillery platforms. Thus, the Wasa was an early attempt to build what we would later call a ship of the line. Äpplet, Vasa's sister ship, was discovered just a few years ago. After Vasa sank, modifications were made to the original plans, and Äpplet sailed reasonably well, though not perfectly. Evolution often comes at a cost.

Vasa sank because she had very little initial stability-resistance to heeling under the force of wind or waves acting on the hull. This was due to the distribution of mass in the hull structure, and to the ballast, guns, provisions, and other objects loaded on board placing a lot of weight too high in the ship.

I think most people where saved becouse it was close to land. A lot of people watching could help. But not all could swim back then... Some people dies on the post like the man you could see in the movie.

Vasa was a bit poorly constructed and was too top heavy, took in water while turning or something of that sort
