Our new Husqvarna mower! | Trying to manage tall grass

Hey everyone! We bought our first zero-turn mower - Husqvarna MZ54 from Lowes and got to working on our grass which was long overdue. We share our initial thoughts and impressions of this mower and later we can share a more in-depth review and showcasing some of the capabilities with handling tall and thick grass.
We appreciate your thoughts and comments so let us know what you think and if you have a different mower or tool you use to maintain your lawn, please let us know in the comments below!

I've got a Husqvarna 525 professional weed eater with a MZ 54 . Use the 105 line on it it will last longer. I have a pond I mow and weed eat around makes a good combo for that.

Pro tip: Throttle the mower down to idle and allow to sit and run at idle before shutting it off. It makes the engine last much longer! This is especially true if working hard, like mowing tall grass! I noticed that the throttle is in the "Wide Open" position with the mower sitting in the garage. This is the telltale sign of shutting it off at WOT...👍

Horses! Our suggestion, since you asked, horses, they would love to live on your beautiful pastures! Good therapy for one and all...all ages as too! One more thing, horses are like potato chips...you can't have just one! Nice spread, same mower we have as well, love it too!

@@FamiLeeLiving horses require a very high degree of care, they can not be allowed to eat ad lib or you risk having them founder, they are not a solution to excess grass, they need shelter and you will end up with a horse poo problem unless you regularly collect it , this in turn will lead to unsightly weed problems. If you want to graze a portion of your land you will need a sheep proof fenced fields. Sheep are the best animal option for keeping pasture looking tidy but need regular drenching, shearing, feet trimming etc. If you can buy weaned lambs and grow them on for a year that is a good meat supply.

Another tip. When engaging and disengaging the blades keep throttle at 1/2 or less. This reduces wear on the PTO and belts. Keep everything greased, follow the maintenance schedule. I'd also suggest getting a zero turn lift and regularly clean the deck. The wash ports are garbage. Caked up grass on the deck will cause rust. And get a cheap blade balancer. When you sharpen the blades make sure they're balanced or you'll get some nasty vibrations which will kill the spindles.

seriously bad advice, the instruction manual says engage blades with engine at full throttle, not doing so will put major shock loading on the engine. the wash ports are not enough but do not use them when the mower [ including spindles] is hot, let the deck cool first so that spindles , bearings etc have returned to cool size before flooding them with water.

We’re homesteading in a small very way now - but plan to purchase land this fall. It’s fun to watch a family a few steps ahead of us! That stinks about the ticks - good reality check for us 😬

Hello😊 thank you so much for interacting via the comments section! We love it when we get a chance to chat with people! Tell us about your small homestead! Even though we have the land, we only just got it and aren’t doing too much either just yet. It all takes time, our ideas and dreams are much much further at the moment lol. And yes, the ticks are no joke, but we are learning how to manage the situation. Thank you for being here😊

Wow that sounds wonderful! I transplanted my cucumbers and I wasn’t patient with hardening them off so most of them don’t look so good. But our daughter did some direct sowing with corn, peas and beans and they just started popping up! They look a bit more hardy from using that method, so I am hopeful 😊

get a husqvarna 525 lst (not the L model lowes has) and uprade to a speedfeed head and grab the husqvarna titanium force huge spool of line (cheaper than crappy line that way…lowes sells it .095” size) You can wack down around the pond and crazy tall stuff with it then probably mow after it dries out a bit. You have enough you may as well have a real line trimmer to go with that mower. A good backpack blower is another crazy handy thing that once you have one you’ll never be without it.
