    The whole time watching this, I kept saying to myself, "Check your fuel line connector!" This happened to mine with less than 250 miles on it and had no clue what was going on with my new bike. Hauled it to the dealer and they figured it out in about two minutes. The mechanic actually told me this is common with the quick fuel connectors with KTM. Glad you got it sorted and adds just another story to your adventure and the list of friends you both met on it. And just a little bit wiser of your steed.

    Greetings from Alaska. Denali Highway is an awesome place. Just how expensive a tow would cost is an understatement! My truck broke down 38 miles east of Cantwell. No cell service of course so I stopped a car of tourists and asked them to send a towtruck from Cantwell, which they did. Meanwhile a private contractor working on the road had a low-boy trailer rig and offered to load my truck aboard, which we did. Just as we were about to head to Cantwell, the tow truck arrived.Also the only game in town>i explained the situation and figured a decent compensation for his trouble. The owner (not driver) wanted $450 for just the drive out- It would have been $900 if he'd have hauled the truck to Cantwell. Gouge much? Over 50 yrs in Alaska and that was one of the most un Alaskan thing I've experienced. However, the low-boy driver was most awesome, hauling me hundeds of miles to Wasilla for repair. He refused any money. I got his address of his business card and sent him and his wife to the best dinner to be had in Anchorage, his home base and my home town.

  • @2UpAndOverloaded

    Wow, what a lovely story! And you know what, that's also quite informative, because I figured a tow out would've been expensive, but honestly I didn't think it would be THAT expensive! That's crazy to know the real price of it. But I'm glad that your tale had a happy ending, because that price gauging truly is a very un-Alaskan thing to do. All we've ever found is kindness to strangers and hospitality in Alaska (and of course all the stunning beauty...). You have a lovely home town, and thank you so much for sharing your experience with us!

    I thought fuel connector as soon as I started watching. Its one of the first things we check on KTM's at the shop if a bike won't fire up. I've seen this so many times with the quick connector. It's always advisable to keep a couple of spare o'rings handy for the male side of the fitting. The o'ring can tear easily if the connector is dry when coupling it back together so use some lube before reconnecting. Great video!

  • @2UpAndOverloaded

    @2UpAndOverloaded

    Жыл бұрын

    Indeed! It is definitely on the list of things to check now. I did check the connection on the piece of hose I used to extend the fuel line. That is the connector I unplug when removing the tank. But it turned out to be the OEM connection that I neglected to check because I hadn’t unplugged it since I put on the extension. Rookie move on my end. Thanks for watching! 100%! I need to put a piece of heatshrink or something over the connector that I now bypass, because it should now just be clicked in once and be able to be forgotten about! But I will definitely take a look at the metal ones as well! Thanks for tuning in and for the awesome advice!

    A small amount of gasoline applied to those filter outers or a shot of starting fluid while the air box was open would have confirmed the lack of fuel. That would have narrowed your search and preserved battery and starter life. It might be good knowledge in the future. I’ve camped on that road. Loved it. Great video, braver than me 🏁

    Yes ,a little shot of gas down the throats would have been my 1st thought ,it would have told you immediately that it was a fuel issue , WARNING, NEVER,EVER use starting fluid (ether)on anything but a diesel and even on a diesel you have to be extremely careful, you can do severe engine damage in a heartbeat, starting fluid technically known as “ether” is extremely dry , highly combustible and explosive,and washes down the cylinder walls and can damage piston rings and cylinder walls very quickly. It’s even more deadly do use it on a two stroke engine. Never use starting fluid ! Use gas. I’m so glad this was a happy ending and a good experience with people for you

    I am so glad that it worked out! Last fall, I put handle bar risers on my Tiger, and everything was fine for several rides. Then, one day this spring, it wouldn't start. I talked to lots of people and checked everything my limited brain could think of, I even replaced the battery. I finally trailered the bike 300km to the dealership and it turned out the connection inside the ignition switch had come loose. I felt stupid for 2 reasons: 1. I didn't open the switch to check the connection. I just never thought of it. 2. It was likely partially disconnected when I put on the risers. I was the architect of my own pain! All across the Trans Labrador Highway, I worried that the bike wouldn't start. It did every time. Stay confident! Ps. People are good to you because you are good people.

    You meet so many genuinely nice people around the world and it is times of need you often stumble across Angels. As others said - Pay it forward when you can and expect nothing in return. Simple little things like a connection , a loose pin in a plug even a pinched Kill switch wire. As you said , Air, Gas, Spark and compression is all you need and it should run. No Gas then No go . The more computer Jiggery Pokery the more difficult to diagnose but the ECU controls the spark and fuel Injection and that black box is subject to electrical gremlins. A spare ECU is a valuable item to carry when touring the wilderness as you do. Give some consideration to getting a spare from a bike wreckers or carry a new OEM or after market for added piece of mind.

  • @2UpAndOverloaded

    @2UpAndOverloaded

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment! Jon apparently has some super human Alaskan immunity to the mosquitoes up there... Not fair, if you ask me. And as far as bikes go, clearly this particular problem was mostly user error, so I don't blame the motorcycle for this one. The old KTM 1190 had other issues that so far haven't resurfaced with the new R version (knock on wood). But honestly, we put that old bike through hell. I think it did a fantastic job with what we put it though, and we've met other travelers riding every other type of motorcycle out there, and they've all had their problems. So we are pretty happy with our choice.

    When it initially fired up and then quit, I was confident it was a fuel issue. Kinda surprised we didn’t see anyone spray starting fluid or other flammable into the throttle body, and if it started then you’ve narrowed it to a fuel feed (or quality) or injector issue. Since you said it showed no codes I would have gone after fuel feed first.

    Great episode! This is the first I've seen of your trips so I'm now sub'd and going to go back and watch your previous videos. Excellent story, editing, and music. I like that you have a genuinely nice attitude. So far my biggest fear when camping in the boonies (Alaska trip) was that my bike started fine but once I got on a paved road (miles from nowhere) the engine started making a lot of bad noises. It sounded like rocks were banging around inside so I stopped immediately and checked oil level and for loose parts but I couldn't find anything, It would have been hours and hours of walking to get to a main road where I would have to flag down a ride to get to a phone to call for a pick-up to get the bike to a mechanic. I sat there for several minutes wondering, should I just ride on and hope I get somewhere to find a repair shop and find out if it throws a rod or destroys the engine some other way, or should I leave it with all my gear and walk out? I decided to keep riding and hope for the best and if the engine blows up I will just give the bike to anyone who wants it and hitchhike to the nearest airport and fly home. I put my jacket and helmet back on and started the engine, that's when I realized I forgot to put my ear plugs in so helmet off, ear plugs in, helmet back on and off I went. Miraculously the engine ran great with no bad noises! Yep. Earplugs. That fixed the engine. I've put many thousands of miles all over Alaska since then with zero problems. I just remember to put my ear plugs in before riding away. Thanks for bringing back the emotions and thinking I had that day, your video was a great catalyst. Ride on! James in Alaska

    James, wow first of all, this is such a great story. I was actually on the edge of my seat, feeling those emotions of "Should I leave the bike?" "Should I just keep going?" "Is anyone ever going to be able to rescue me way out here?" These are serious thoughts and fears. And then to find out it was as simple as earplugs... Wow, it just has a lot of similarities to our story in Alaska of breaking down and feeling stuck in the middle of nowhere for days, only to find out that it was a simple mistake that was totally user error. I guess it happens to the best of us. Second of all, welcome to our channel! We're super happy to have you along for the ride, and I'm also looking forward to hearing your own stories of your adventures on the road! It’s our worst nightmare! But we were surrounded by such amazing people that it wasn’t nearly as depressing as it would have been if we were alone. Fancy bikes with 6 CPUs are fun when all of the luxury wire harnesses work, but are a pain to diagnose. This time, it just turned out to be that I was an idiot. 😂 Miss you guys and Merry Christmas 🎁🎄

    Always start by checking the fuel supply, and then see if you have ignition, spark on the spark plug. If you have a spark, pour some gasoline into the cylinder.

    I stopped at the 13 minute mark and at this time no resolution. I have a 2016 R1200GSA and luckily I was a mechanic for over a decade on foreign cars (German technology mostly). Not knowing what to do but to keep trying and hoping it will start leaves you in a desperate state. I carry tools that would enable me to pull the spark plugs. The spark plug can tell you right away if you are getting fuel to the cylinder. If the plug is wet then it is probably a spark issue. Loosing compression on the cylinder or cylinders all at once is non-existent. I am anxious to get back to your video to see what happens. I also have Mosko Moto luggage and love them! Wow! I have been there as many of us have. With good intensions and never realizing what could happen by adding that extension of hose. When troubleshooting the next problem always do a history check on what was done to the bike prior to the breakdown. Just by going over that and taking a look and pulling it apart if necessary sometimes, Voila! I enjoyed your story immensely. Safe travels!

    The spark plugs on the 1190 are awful to get to (at least the front 2). Much easier on a 1200GSA! The issue turned out to be something fairly simple, and I was kinda embarrassed that I didn’t catch it on my own. It was definitely in the realm of things that I should have been able to figure out. I hope you’re not too disappointed in me 😂. Thanks for tuning in and for the good advice!

    Bikes have become too complex. This initially looks like a fuel delivery issue. There are multiple sensors that can stop the systems from working. In the old days it would be a simple matter of cleaning the carb and filters.

  • @2UpAndOverloaded

    @2UpAndOverloaded

    Yes I wholeheartedly agree! All those bells and whistles make for some comfortable riding, but sometimes it becomes so complicated that when something simple goes wrong, the whole thing shuts down. You really need a computer to diagnose these issues, so it becomes very difficult when you're stuck in the side of the road. Thanks for commenting and watching!

  • @G58

    @@2UpAndOverloaded We don’t actually need to be that knowledgeable of the inner workings of the devices fitted to current motorised vehicles. We only need to know what they are capable of preventing them from doing. My 2002 TDCi Mondeo engine just suddenly stopped one day as I was emerging from a junction. The starter motor still turned over the engine, so I had battery power. This was a very similar situation to your own. I phoned the local dealership for advice - when that was still possible, and was told it could be the fuel pump, a blocked fuel filter, fuel contamination, a sensor issue - too difficult to diagnose over the phone. £95 to collective car, £95 to examine it - 30 minutes work! So I went on a Ford forum and searched the precise issue. As far as I can recall, the most common cause was either the camshaft position sensor, or the cylinder head oil temperature sensor. The originally fitted part had issues, and was grey in colour. Most were replaced within first few years. Sure enough, mine was grey. So I caught a bus home, cycled to the dealership, bought the sensor for £15, cycled back to the car, fitted it, and of course the engine started immediately. All we know from this is that the ECU needs to be aware of the temperature of the oil in the cylinder head. If it doesn’t, it cuts the power to the fuel pump. An that’s all we need to know. It’s not rocket science. However, the technology removes all control from the driver. The fuel pump does not need to know the oil temperature. The bike I’m building is a heavily modified CCM 604 framed BMW F650 Dakar engine that’s been converted from EFI to a traditionally gravity fed SmartCarb. No ECU, so the only job that the sensors will be doing is telling ME the oil, water and air temperatures, so that I can make my own decisions. All bikes were made this way before the legislators started filling their diapers as fast as their bank accounts over the climate myths. The data disproves ALL their claims, yet because of mandated levels of emissions based control is deemed necessary, you, and people like you, can be stranded in the middle of the city, or wild Alaska - just because the wire to a sender unit is broken or just has become disconnected, or the sensor itself has failed. I choose not to play that game. Your bike will become economically non viable as soon as the cost of those sensors outweighs the value of the bike. And in the future, anyone who becomes nostalgic enough to want to restore one, will be paying thousands of dollars for the sensors and ECU - none of which are actually necessary. My bike on the other hand will only need fuel, battery and compression - as has been the case since the invention of the internal combustion engine. But since it’s a water cooled engine, it’s also going to need an intact water jacket, hoses and radiator. And because the F650 engine has not got a kickstart, the starter motor will have to be functional - if I don’t want to bump start it every time. It’s literally impossible to bump start most EFI bikes, even if the battery is only a bit low. We’ve sleepwalked into the current situation, which will, in only a few years mean the end of ICE vehicles altogether.
