UPDATE: There have been many comments expressing concern over the moldy state of our bathroom. ^_^ It's not a problem I'd ever faced in previous apartments, so thank you all for your cleaning advice! Ultimately I went with Kabi Killer (about a bottle and a half!) and it worked wonders! While some of the mold was imbedded in the paint and wouldn't budge, overall it looks like a whole new bathroom! I'll probably post a new-and-improved tour sometime this winter.

If you see mold on the walls, there is a lot more in and behind that you can’t see. The spores are always there and multiplying. It’s like when a house gets flooded, everything that molds has to be replaced. That bathroom is a health hazard that needs to be remedied or you’ll have long term health issues with your lungs from constantly breathing in the spores.

I might be able to help: because the owners should have definitely handled that bathroom mold before you moved in - very unhealthy and it can lead to cancerous conditions (research it well because only *some* of the doctors I've worked with have an understanding about that)...there should be an exhaust fan in there, especially if your house was by built in a humid location in the country - but at the very least, the window should be opened during and/or after the shower until the room is fully dry, *every time.* my apartment bathroom had a similar issue - turned out that the handyman either didn't try to clean it or gave up on trying before I moved in..so he decided to just cover the mold that was in between the shower tiles with more grout.. we didn't know until it started peeling away and it was awful!..and it was black mold, too!..yuck!!.. tried nearly everything natural and then tried everything conventional to kill it, even household bleach...very frustrating and nothing worked..until I found what turner out to be a *very* concentrated bleach spray made just for just the purpose of ridding spaces of mold..hated having to use such a strong chemical but it worked!.. main thing is safety - for adults, children, babies and any animals, including any birds in cages and fish in tanks..and *no mixing with any other chemicals, if you and your loved ones want to live, no joke* ....the bathroom and also the house/apartment should be well ventilated - and keep rubber or nitrile gloves on hand - as well as an effective safety mask and plastic goggles (those can be found in home improvement and construction supply stores - in the USA I found all supplies and the anti-mold spray at Home Depot)...and several sponges or rags to rinse off/wipe down the tile walls with water after the mold is gone (and even if you decide to throw those away afterwards, please wash them in the washing machine first - or at least rinse them in the shower/tub with cool or cold water)..otherwise, better than that is a hand-held shower head that can be used to spray down the walls with water.. keep the space ventilated as much as possible (fan on, windows open, whatever it takes, until the air is fresh and the room is dry)...good luck! .... almost forgot: don't know if you can find the same brand in Japan but it's called, "Home Armor 2x Stronger Instant Mold and Mildew Stain Remover." you can look it up online so you can at least know what *exact kind* of product to look for.

It is a nice large space esp. the kitchen. To keep the toaster oven from over-working,micro-wave the yams for more than half the cooking time before toaster oven or learn the convection oven. I have one it cooks things faster with a nice finish. Thanks for tour. Huggs.silky.

We used to live in Japan for 3 years and we rented an apartment in Zushi, Kanagawa. We were not allowed to put anything inside the tatami room because it's very expensive. During that time I wasn't aware of it and I put my bike once in a while at the tatami room and the realtor/property manager commented about it because it left a 2 tires (shallow marks) and they almost charged us for it when we're moving to the US. House in Japan is very expensive. Also, we are not allowed to hang photos (no nails) on the wall because of the wall papers. I've experienced being stopped 3x at the train station by the immigration officers to check my status if i'm illegal in their country. We love to go to travel on other parts of Japan like Kyoto. I was very impressed how clean their country is. Our apartment was close to Zushi Beach and I remembered walking there and saw big (2-3 feet) Koi fishes on the brook or river nearby. I'm surely visit Japan again in the future.

+ MsShaye H Not everyone can afford to move, just because of mold. Also the new house you move into can have mold as well. What then? Move again? No. +fighterjoe22 You just have to remove it efficiently. If there would be an window in the washroom you could air it, but if not, then there is no other chance. It likes moist conditions, maybe you can dehumidify the area after using the bathroom? Maybe use dehumidifier of some kind. Also there is an anti mold paint available. You must kill any mold residue with bleach or borax and then paint with anti-mold paint. I have never done it myself though, this is just an idea.

Indeed, you would never, not ever find an apartment/house in Chicago for $430. Hope you are saving a nest egg for when you come back here (??) I wish I had done something like that prior to getting married. What I did do is move back in with my parents, work and save, but it would have been a lot more interesting to move overseas!

Nice to meet you, Mary Anne! Actually, my husband and I waited until AFTER we were married to apply to the JET Programme, because unmarried couples aren't likely to get placed in the same prefecture. Also, if you're married and only one of you gets a position with JET, they will still sponsor your spouse's visa. So it's never too late! jetprogramme.org/en/ As for saving a nest egg, we hope to, but so far we're not doing a great job! :P Once you're here it's tough to choose saving over trips. We have not decided whether we're renewing my contract for another year, but if we don't, well...it's gonna be crunch time soon.

Bleach wont solve the shower room mold? Repainting? It's a shame because I see the potential and also it looks like black mold that is extremely dangerous to breath in especially with the steam loosening it and making it airborne. Look into how you can solve this issue on your own or hire someone.

Hahaha it was pretty bad! But seriously, the living conditions in Japan are just fine! (Except for that temperature regulation is a bit harder). My bathroom is super old, and having never rented in such a humid climate, I had no idea how to deal with mold. It's not representative of most bathrooms here, I promise. ;) Plus having a whole shower room is really great!

Dani are actually a different species than bed bugs! They're closer to fleas I think. Unlike bed bugs, you can't really see them with the naked eye.

chlorine soap a broom and a person with hygiene would be the basic thing to eliminate that mold I would not bathe in a bathroom in those conditions or eat in that house because if the bathroom is like this I would not even see the kitchen and many less be a husband a woman so dirty the apt is nice the bad condition make look bad.

I dont like japanese houses or apartments. They have lots of little rooms and the clutter accumulates. No closets and the bathrooms divided all, over the house....the onlu modern thing amongst the ugliness is the touch button tub and bidet type toilet, but the rest, depressing.... np privacy....

I think I prefer Western-style architecture overall too, but I've seen some pretty cool modern Japanese houses. Also, there is actually a lot of great storage space in Japanese houses like mine. I have entire walls of hidden, sliding-door storage closets in my living room and bedroom area.
