Our Honest Impressions of Oaxaca
Oaxaca blew our minds! There are many things to do in Oaxaca and this trip opened our eyes to this region’s diversity, the philosophy of ‘guelaguetza’, the delicious food, and a vibrancy that made this visit unforgettable. Outside of Oaxaca city, we visited Hierve el Agua, Teotitlan de Valle, and learned about the tradition of ‘Contentadas.’

To be fair, Día de Muertos is not as authentic a Mexican tradition as Americans believe. If was basically fabricated in the 1930s to build a sense of nationhood. They took a Spanish tradition and tried to give it an Aztec mythology. Every year it diverges more from its original form and now its basically a Halloween parade for tourists.
@TheYarbros

@@ade910 Idk about that we commeorated the days in Morelia & Patzcuaro not very many foreigners but nationals trully celebrating w/ honor, family and remembering their loved ones with rituals...it was alot bigger than any type of Halloween...very authentic and original vibes.

@@TheYarbros There is something off about the Day of the Dead for me. Ultimately its a tradition shared by most Catholic countries but in its current festive and "Aztec" Mexican version was created in the 1930s as a nation-building exercise spreading throughout the country with state sponsorship.

Thank you. I appreciate this thorough tour of this Indigenous land called Oaxaca. Delicious mole negro I made once. Took hours to prepare. Reminds me of pepperpot first made by the Inidgenous peoples of Guyana. Rug and candle making, Hierve el Agua... Gorgeous neighbourhoods of expansive beauty, energizing people throughout the city. Gueleaguetza festival, I attended while completing my thesis. Sharing the harvest, I saw the same tradition on Hopi land in Arizona Glad to hear you are writing a book. Peace and love to you both.

Magic is a good word to describe it.
I really loved the description of the Mole' tasting experience! The first time I had it I will admit my taste buds were a little confused... then while visiting the Pyramids of San Martin, MX I tried a RED Mole' that totally blew my mind! It was SO delicious! I do not know how they make it so many different ways and it seems that regions add their own flavor. This is a terrific glimpse into an area I would love to travel... Just a little curious about what sort of Chemicals they used to "purify" the car and persons with? Did you notice any smell? Just strange customs everywhere huh? I have also seen smudging as a purifying or cleansing of the Spirit... I actually had it done in MX City one time... seemed lovely... THANK YOU for everything you share!

We loved stumbling upon murals while walking the different neighborhoods. We don't have a good handle of cost of living but I'd venture to say Gdl is more expensive - its a much bigger city while Oaxaca city is smaller, with less anemities (but lots of charm) than what you'd see in a metropolitan area.

I’ve been to most those places you went a couple years ago. Oaxaca is a great town, and I want to go back, but I couldn’t live there. The recent surge of people moving in and the increase in tourism is pricing people out. You can find expensive mezcal or a fine dining establishment on every corner but if you want to grab peanut butter you better have your walking shoes on. I personally could live in Mitla and visit on the weekends though, that area is awesome
