Wow! What a perfect and timely explanation. I've been doing that with my GSD. I need to rethink a lot of these scenarios I've been doing with him. Of course, I don't have anywhere near the experience that you do, but I want to thank you for being so genuine.

You know the old saying, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

The best trainers I've seen are people who understand empathy and patience. Two things that are lost on most people these days, unfortunately especially on people who have the position of power to have a dog put down for (and unrelated to this video) things as simple as reactivity vs aggression. Pounds, shelters, AC Officers, and even vets, many are quick to accuse a dog of being aggressive and request it be put down... Very few are as quick to think "what led to that outburst? why would a dog I just manhandled with a catch pole, that I've never met before, just bite me when I grab it's collar to release it? The last 2 dogs didn't do that, this one must be aggressive and fear/anxiety/distress have nothing to do with it at all, that's 1 strike."

My dog [working bred GSD] only gets treats in puzzel "toys" When she has tried for a while, she brings it to me to get the yummy out for her!!

I get what u r saying but the dog should always allow a human to mess with their food. I’m taking raw chicken out of Presa Canario and Boerboel mouth, they’re happy because they know I will hold that for them to chew it easier (it’s frozen 1/2 chicken). Our old “game” made exactly so we don’t have problems around resources. Pure positive spin or there can be a lot of problems

Setting boundaries around play has been so beneficial for me with my puppy. But i have also made that mistake of "helping" her get her food out of a puzzle toy like a kong. My girl has no food gaurding behavior at all though. She has real issues with spacial domination, stalking/hunting, and herding behavior 😮. Play helps teach her a lot of the boundaries I need though.

We own 3 German Shepherds and one thing I will never do is reach down near their food bowls while they're standing right there. Our dogs are fed in their crates but I learned early on not to mess with them while they're eating.

Isn't that an unhealthy behavior? Your dog should cherish you as it's food provider no? If I reach down my dog ignores me and eats around my hand..she knows her meals come from me and she knows I don't steal her food lol. Just asking. Maybe I'm the wrong one .

My dobie attempted to be food aggressive during his teen stage and I put afford in teaching him to be ok about me around his food. I would come , call his name, say “stop” and “wait”, then I would put a high value treat in his bowl and leave . Now he feels ok if I approach him while he eats.

I fed my GS by hand (we would train w his kibble) from 8 weeks until around 8, 9 months, then I started using a food bowl. He would never ever even think of biting anyone’s hands around his food..
