I'm in Indiana right now, and a week or so ago there were tornado warnings for our specific are, plus storms. I was a little freaked out, but my mooch docking hosts reminded me I was next to the barn. As far as Florida, I lived there off and on since '93, and went through 3 or 4 hurricanes. It's the eye of the hurricane, not tornado. LOL

We saw other RV folks take shelter in underground parking garages. When we travel we find the nearest paid parking garage that is open 24 hours and plan to go there in an emergency. Far as when we lived in our mobile, we rented a nearby Uhaul storage unit. Got the 24 hour access. That was our safe spot to go to in the event of an emergency, it was about 7 minutes away but our only option. Since U Haul has garages, all we had to do is make it into that garage with our huge van. With a van full of people and our 23 lizards it was the quickest way to get us to safety. We would just sit in the Uhaul garage and only opted to get out into the storage area if we knew radar was indicating the weather was worsening. If we only had a few of us it would be get into the storage area immediately but its way easier to wait in garage which was built mostly into the ground before unloading us all. So grateful we had this spot to retreat too during the 2 years we lived in our mobile.

The main thing to do is to get into a shelter with foundation. In RV parks 99 percent of the time it's the bathrooms. Neither the RV nor the truck are good options.

We live in Southwest MO. We moved here 9 years ago from southern CA. We bought a Class A RV, Itasca Sunova 34’ with 3 slides. We used it year round in CA and weather was never a problem! Since we moved to MO, we’ve had over $30,000.00 in weather damage! A few years ago, we were staying at Ozark Luxury RV Resort in Arkansas. We knew a thunder storm was supposed to to happen, so we put all our outdoor rugs, bbq, and chairs away. Later that night we heard a police car siren that kept going and going! I told my husband, maybe that is their tornado warning? We went outside, it was midnight. People were locking up their rv’s, getting in their vehicles and leaving. We followed suit. Luckily, the resort had a tornado shelter. As soon as we got in to the shelter, the electricity went out. When it was over, there were downed trees. A couple trees fell on rv’s. Always check the storm accommodations where you are staying! Tornado Alley is unpredictable and can happen any time of year. Glad you guys are ok!

We live in Florida and check out campground bathrooms, club houses and laundry rooms for shelter potential in severe weather. BTW that cute little frog is a Cuban tree frog. It is an invasive species that eats our native frogs and lizards. Information can be found on University of Florida institute of food and agricultural sciences extension service. Because of threat to native species and other problems caused by these frog they recommend to humanely euthanize them.

If the campground does not have a shelter you did the best thing. That RV would not keep you safe in the storm. At least you would stand a chance in your truck running from the storm. I was at a KOA in Oklahoma and the warning went off we went to the shelter and it was locked up, what a joke. After the storm passed I went to the desk and asked why in the world it was locked and was told they have to much trouble with vagrants sleeping in the shelters. LOL

Being full time - your locations will change often. Good things to note: (1) potential natural disasters in the area you are traveling; (2) emergency shelters in the area; (3) emergency plans of park, campground, etc.; (4) your personal emergency plans; (5) and, a go bag (as you will probably be leaving your RV for a safe building.). Stay aware, stay safe.

Hi, I’ve been camping in north central Texas. I happened to be in Arlington Texas at a KOA campgrounds. A tornado watch was issued and then in the evening it was upgraded to a tornado warning. During the evening the tornado sirens when off and thankfully, the campgrounds had a tornado shelter. It was a new building housing the men’s and women’s showers. There were a lot of campers at the campgrounds and it was full inside the men’s side along with pets. The tornado missed us thank goodness but it was a very nervous time. The campgrounds office had our cell numbers so they issued the information regarding the storm shelter prior to the storm. The weather channels were excellent in their coverage of the storm system and altered you in advance to been ready to move into a space place during the storm. I hope you’ll have a safe journey home to Colorado.

Couple thoughts on tornados from someone who has lived in tornado territory his whole life. 1) When you arrive at a location find the place you will go in a storm. In campgrounds this is normally a cement block bathhouse. Add this to your arrival checklist. 2) Consider putting together a Go Bag that can help you survive for a couple days in a SHTF scenario (no, I’m not a prepper). Here is a list of what is in our Mountainsmith backpack: GO BAG INVENTORY EXTERIOR Two bottles of water Empty Nalgene bottle Empty Camelback water purifier Multi tool Goal zero solar panel 7000ma power pack Black Diamond head lamp Gerber knife on belt INTERIOR Water purifier strainer lid Water purifier main lid SOS ration bars 8/23 expiration Wet Ones pack Cliff bars (2) Vinyl gloves First aid kit Camp soap Drinking water tabs Insect repellent Anti-Perspirant Sun screen Aleve container (2) Toothbrush (2) Toothpaste Carmex Back pocket Sewing kit Bandanna Two pair gloves Trash bags Cable ties Double survival blanket Dryer fluff Empty stuff sack Yellow safety vest Platypus water holder Life straw Silver reflective tent Glasses case, assorted glasses Stuff sack full of clothes Top pocket Lighter Life straw instructions Spoon/fork tool Survival guide Whistle 2200 ma power pack Pepper spray Paracord (100 feet) Voyager Emergency crank radio Mess kit Poncho (2) Emergency crank flashlight Flint and striker Compass Note pad 110v to USB plug Gorilla tape Hand warmers (4) Knife sharpener

I've heard people say "eye of the tornado" but that's not a thing... If it's a hurricane or a storm WITH an eye, then yes, but not tornadoes. For a tornado, my grandfather always said "calm before the nightmare" (Not calm before the storm, because the storm is already there, but calm before the nightmare because he told me how his heart shot into his throat in '85 when he heard his daughter, my mom, and her family were hit dead-on by a tornado without much warning; Pennsylvania in 1985 an outbreak of tornadoes happened and it got UGLY, I wasn't born until 1994, but if they had been a few minutes later... I wouldn't have been born). The "hook" in a storm is the one thing you should keep track of, because that is where a much higher chance of a tornado will be. Glad you guys are alright after that, even if what I comment is months late.

We pay a lot of attention to the weather. When outside of Dallas we had to spend the night in the restroom/storm shelter, standing room only. We had to alter our trip because St Joseph, Missouri got hit by a tornado so we left Dallas and went north to Oklahoma. On our way, we went thru the path of a tornado that had hit in the last half hour and the destruction was horrendous. We spent the night in a shelter during a hurricane in Gulf Shores Alabama. We were so fortunate no damage to the RV. If you RV you just have to be smart. Always check with the campground for the shelters they provide.

Next time you go from FL to Colorado, (or back) you can use what i call the alternative route, (been driving semi trucks for 44 years) I-10 to Hwy 231 north to Montgomery (thru Dothan), from Montgomery, I-65 north to Birmingham, 10 miles after Birmingham take I-22 west to Memphis, in Memphis take I-40 west all the way to Amarillo, TX, in Amarillo take Hwy 87 (287) until Dumas, here by Dumas you can split 87 going NW, you come out south of CO on I-25 (some mountains) in case you go south of Denver, or keep on hwy 287 north all the way to I-70 by Limon, CO, from there I-70 west to Denver. These just to be my alternative route, with all the traffic now a days, it have become my main route between Colorado and Florida. I do own a Monaco Dynasty myself.

Haha I love frogs too! I would have to save him too. It’s so scary when bad weather hits. There was no shelter when we were stuck in Arkansas. They said to go to the bathrooms- didn’t give me much comfort. Luckily it didn’t hit. We got one of those automatic warnings for a wildfire when we were in California, and I completely understand when Scott said it’s really scary when that happens. I’m so glad you are ok! I wish we had good plans for a tornado but we don’t. Our lose plans are similar to yours, get in the truck and find a safe place to shelter. Smart that you got ahead of things! We left northern Montana early to avoid a snowstorm but then south there was massive flooding. Smart that you keep track of your costs in RV Wizard.
