Our First Reaction Video!!

One of social media's favorite topics: how women should dress and be addressed. Mo'Nique recently took to social media to tell Black women not to wear bonnets and slippers in public. In this video, we discuss a podcast where a fellow Black woman stated that women should be address by how they dress. Meaning, if their social media is filled with pictures of minimal clothing, they should be addressed as such. We discuss our opinion on this topic. Sound off below!

Thank you ladies for addressing this... I have had the same conversation with my wife. I told her how I felt when I was a young child & I was approached by men as though I was an adult. I clearly looked like a child, even though I developed early. Many times, I was fully covered, but it didn’t matter. My wife, on the other hand, is judged based on her masculine presenting clothes. Many times I have watched her go into a store to be followed by people who stare at her or literally point & laugh at her. Bottom line is we, as women, are constantly being judged on what we wear and don’t wear & for some reason, people feel entitled to comment on our dressing- either positively or negatively. Not only is it insulting and unfair, but it makes some of us question ourselves on what others may think or perceived about us.

I totally agree cousins!!! But I also think we have to be aware of the double standard and not put ourselves in danger or know the type of comments that will come if dressed a certain way… BUT I do think we have to educate men and women and the topic at a young age. It takes all of us!!! It was surprising a woman saying that though and then the brothers speaking out!! That’s what we need!

I think if you teach people respect of others’ bodies, it won’t matter what you wear. Because I am curvy, a suit can look different on me than someone who is not curvy at all. I had no hand in that and have no control over it. I think it’s just another way to control women’s bodies

@@JamillaandQue I absolutely agree cause I am curvy as well… I just see both perspectives. I know I’m curvy so I know when I wear certain things I may get comments and I have to prepare for that… I also think we have to teach respect cause I shouldn’t have to worry about comments or getting hurt for wearing certain things.

Wholeheartedly agreed with you both. I have a Daughter and even though I encourage her to dress however she feels comfortable , the real deal is that the wider world won’t see her as a teen dressing however she wants, it will attract comments and grabs. So I always remind her that she has to be ready to unfortunately deal with the negative comments that will come. She has had to run away from a stranger whilst walking by the park for heavens sake!! I’m NOT shocked a woman said that. My grandmother was the one who gave me the issues I have around my body. Because unfortunately she thought if she covered me or tried to hide how curvy I was at a young age that she could protect me from sexual predators. So as I grew up they was I internalized it was “if you dress this was your beckoning the male gaze/sexual attention”. It wasn’t until college that I was educated and my views changed to understand no matter what I have on it isn’t an excuse for inappropriate, unwanted malefuckery. So this woman unfortunately is still functioning on that mindset that what you wear has something to do with the sexual harassment.

I really think society polices woman way too much. There have been so many instances of women getting disrespected while fully covered. The root cause is that women are still seen as property. As less than a man. Clothing honestly has nothing to do with treatment. If you go into communities/cultures/countries where women are fully covered when they leave their homes, there are still high levels of violence against women.

We say this to our girls because so much of society does not conform to basic common sense! This world is definitely upsidedown and we need to do better, teach better and stop being so closed minded. #respect........ However..... Most likely if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then guess what 🤔.... On the other hand each situation should be treated differently. Que you dress masculine but nothing about how you move says that you want to be treated like a man. Some women look masculine dress masculine and move masculine, therefore I would treat them in that way. Bottom line is I'm going to mind my damned business, if we make eye contact I will say hello and keep it moving... 😂

I’m late but I have thoughts. I remember seeing that clip and sending the lady a mean side eye cause while she has the right to her opinion, she’s spuing this asinine idea that women have to be on some respectability mess in order to be seen, heard and validated. This whole ratchet vs respectful thing does nothing but harm and further divide women. It was very disappointing to see a woman uphold and defend patriarchy. Women already have to fight to dismantle bigotry but when a woman participates in it it hits different.🤷🏾‍♀️

You should carry yourself as a woman or how you want to be addressed. Don't get me wrong, check out the church......how would you dress there?. Some clothes are not made for ever spot... I am a woman, daughter, mother, sister, niece, cousin. And I carry myself as a lady, but I've got a backside that gets lots of attention. J'mill. I correct all day long. Why? Bc I want what I want. RESPECT, if you don't do it nobody else will. A man will be a man, just piss me off, bc I respect you , respect me. And if you don't I call you out.
