We had a big rain here on Friday… 100mm. Yesterday and today are beautiful. We needed it, but up the cost there was some serious flooding with 350 mm in about 24 hours. Not so good. Hoping your flood mitigation scheme works. I understand the way you want it to function. Happy gardening.. Cheers🌸🌸🌸🌸

The idea that you have for pumping water from well sounds like it might work, but definitely pump water into storage tanks for later use. If it doesn’t work, I do think the next step for a more permanent solution, since water always takes the path of least resistance, to start at that higher ground area above (where you stated the water runs down from) and dig a trench horizontally under that higher ground and then continue down each side the vegetable and around the back end of the garden so its “squared in”and then continue the trench to an area where holding tanks and the well can catch as water runs down the trenches. ❤ Loved seeing how well the seedlings are coming along. Oh and another great tip for roses? Blend up banana peels in water and pour around them.❤❤ we’re having the same weather pattern here, rain, rain and oh look more rain!😂

Hello Teresa :) thank you for your advises and rose tips !!!! when I used to work in catering and we had so much bananas I used to bring them home and put them under my roses .. they loved it !!! Actually banana water are good for flowers and specially for tomatoes !!! One lovely gentlemen said I should use chicken poo as well !!! (and I do have a lot of it ;) ) We will fill IBC tanks for sure as we will use this water in a near future Hopefully rain will stop soon xxx

I was thinking the exact same thing. Water runs down the hill onto the flat land below, so if there was a ditch or swale at the bottom of the hill which continued around the vege garden then maybe that would help. You are lucky to have the tractor which you could use to dig this. Also lots of organic matter and compost put onto the garden all the time should act like a sponge and soak up some water. In NZ we have had bad flooding also over the winter so all you can do is try all these things and hope they help. If all else fails, grow rice, Ha!

Missed you guys! Gina, your seedlings and green house are racing away! You definitely have green fingers! I think most of Europe have had a very wet week! The only thing that really flourishes from all the rain are the weeds and the grass, everything else has got so drenched that it’s now slowing down the season growth that we’re all waiting for! Love the way your cats want to be involved with everything, very cute following the flow of the stream down through the top terrace. Hopefully the up coming week will be markedly dryer and a little warmer!❤

I agree you need to remove the water for your garden, but dont you think it would be best if you had a pond dug so that all the extra water that you have during the raining period can be used later during the dry summer. In the best interest of your water needs I think if you had transit to know your elevations, you could do all of the channels and direction of the water could be done without the need for a pump, at least until you needed to pump water during the dry summer times.

@@portugalitis yep, dig it in to the soil. And also put some around the base of the rose Bush. The rain will water the nutrients in to the roots system.

After the recent bad weather I bet you think you are still in England. Well I can asure you it is a lot worse over there than here and far far more expensive to do what you are doing. Although cheaper and better weather is S.W. Scotland where I had my last farm is still better here, as you will see as the climate keeps changeing. U.K. will soon be incapable of producing and food. I hope you are storing some of this lovely liquid as no doubt you will need it in the summer. Later this week is forecast to reach 30 which is a bit warm in early April Mine is full and the walls have sealed so it will be there when I need it and at the moment all is growing very well and fruit setting like mad. Why don't you dig a reservoir and store more water as am sure you will need it in summer as can get into the mid 40's where you are. I now have 35,00 gallons in mine and am sure that will take me through the heat of the summer. Looking at you paddling in the garden reminds me of late last year when my pond was soaking away and flooding the garden area, but now since being flooded again and again, thankfully the walls have sealed and I don't have that problem any more. Just plenty of water for summer. Yes I have planted 700 oaks, but holy oak for the timber and too keep min of Ag happy so they keep paying me the grant as it pays all my growing costs.

@@portugalitis Yes it is a lot better here in many respects, but there are some things that I miss. Like being able to go too the shop or store and buy what you need. Here you have to look harder and in many cases can't get and importing is out the question due too the hassle and cost of duty., but there weather has been far worse than here with 3 times normal rainfall and very strong winds of over 100 m.p.h. at times. As I said if you need any advice on anything, just ask as am an old hand at this lark as unlike you 2 I started at age 22. I won't tell you long ago that is, but long enough to know you can never be self relient as there is always something you need you can't produce or make. So have fun.

Thank you :) my parents had farm so from young age I helped them and learner how to do things ... Portugal got different climate and we are concentrating on a barn build as well .. and to be honest first few year it's only experimenting what to plant and where to plant . in 5 years I will be so much better .. but I do love challenges and new things that's why we chosen this life style if we wanted to be simple and boring we would of stayed and worked in UK ... and some people are happy to do that and it's everyone's choice what they do with they life xxx Giedre

@@portugalitis Yes am aware of the change in climate, which is why I gave you the advice as had 4 years here and this is my 5th growing season and what is looking like a bumper harvest , at the moment, but I also had 2 years in N. Zealand on the south Island where the climate is a kin too here and I had Elsanta strawberries which fruited 3 times in 1 season, unlike U.K. where you only get 0ne crop., but the black plastic is a must if you want very big weed free crops. I have just bought new plants this month as lost all mine in the heat of 22 along with a lot of other plants as both well and watermine ran dry. Fortunately with all the rain this year and green slime in the pond, the walls have sealed so not loosing my water this time so have increased my planting. Whether you grow to eat or to eat and sell, you should use the same methods that are tried and tested. I grew to sell for 40 years now just to eat, but I still use the same methods and all organic as well. Just trying too help so you don't run out in winter as is very difficult to keep some things through the winter, so now I grow 2 crops not just one.
