Amazing! I met someone once who built 5 above ground round house components using rebar and gunnite used in swimming pool construction. He was a metal welding artist, Bill Lishman. He buried the domes to insulate them. He found slinging the gunnite upwards challenging. The five rooms were connected by a tunnel. The ceiling lites did not iris open and closed. He did his build to be able to merge with the environment. He loved watching the eagles soaring.

The iris-like shutter to control light through the skylight is simply ingenious.

The herringbone brick is wonderful ( and stabilizing ) as is the fully fantastic iris ( something to be considered for geodesic growing domes that regulate air Bernoulli current air flow and temperature with automatic thermal hydraulic control ) .

Thanks, Haley. I made the blades of the iris from Fibre glass sheets from Lowes and used a belt drive garage door opener to power it.

Excellent Dome. Are these bricks normal clay bricks or light weight ones. May I know size of the bricks as well please. Also cement is quick setting cement or normal one.

Thanks, Marilyn. It took 5 months altogether. For a home I would include windows in the dome like a miniature version of the beautiful Hagia Sophia dome in Turkey.

You know Alvan, among the many domes or other names some people may call it, this is the only one in my head I'm thinking of doing in the Philippines. I have seen a lot on u-tube but when I encounter your brick dome, I really like it. What you have done is exactly what's in my plan, of course my plan is still in my head and know one knows it but not anymore. But in seriousness, this type of dome is the only one I think I can do on my own, at my own time and nobody would bother me doing it. I already found a good supplier of bricks. It is not a common construction material in the Philippines. It was develop out of Taal Volcano ashes mixed with other natural ingredients. But anyway, thanks for sharing and again, I LOVE IT and I LIKE TO BUILD ONE.

Thanks, Robert. A belt driven garage door opener did the trick in my case for driving the oculus and I used PVC bushings from Lowes for the pivot points. Good luck with your project. Hope you'll post it..

Here is another idea I've been thinking about to let light in all the time. A little more practical than using fiber optics. Using crystal clear resin vacuumed into a 1/2" vinyl tube and exposed to UV light will make a very simple optical fiber. If you place enough of them you can have a type of window with perfect privacy. If you also make half sphere lenses perhap 3/4" in diameter you can glue them to the outside end of your optical waveguide so they will collect light and channel it into your waveguide.

Thanks. It's in Fletcher, North Carolina. It's not insulated but, being partly below ground, maintains a fairly constant year-round temperature.

Thanks for your kind comments, Ricardo. When I was planning the dome, I read quite a bit about Raphael Guastavino who came to the States over a hundred years ago. Much of his amazing work on tiled domes and vaulted ceilings still remains. An MIT professor, John Ochsendorf, has written a book about Guastavino titled The Art of Structural Tile". It is a well written and beautifully illustrated record of the Guastavino family's work. John is professor of structural engineering and I'm sure he'd be able to steer you in the right direction regarding calculations on what you describe as lower vaults. John also created a couple of applets for Eddy's method of analysis web.mit.edu/masonry/wwlau/eddyTutorial.htm and for Wolfe's method web.mit.edu/masonry/wwlau/wolfeMethodology.htm . Good luck with your project.

Amazing! Love it! I'm in the Philippine so looking at extra ways to reinforce domes. Was there a reason why you didn't have the rebar going through the holes of the brinks also? Perhaps that would make it stronger. Keen to hear your thoughts! :-)

Hello, Matt. Thanks for your comments. There are a couple of reasons why I didn't run the re-bar through the bricks. The first was that it would be very time consuming to thread every brick down a length of rebar (even if I only went up to the compression/tension interface at around 52 degrees) and the second is that the holes do not line up because the circumference of rows decreases as the walls get higher. Are you planning to build a dome in the Philippines ? Good luck with your project.

Great system with the rebars if you don't have the special training for vault building and excellent result. Do you know that most old buildings in France and Europe have vaulted basements or rather CAVES, and that it's the weight placed on top of the vault that makes it strong?

Thanks for the comments, Khamomil. Yes, I've been lucky enough to visit the catacombs in Rome and in Paris. The big names, of course, are Filippo Brunelleschi and Raphael Guastavino. Guastavino moved from Spain to the States and built many impressive tiled roofs including the biggest unsupported elliptical dome on the St, Lawrence Basilica right here in Asheville, NC.

Oh, no. It rains a lot here in North Carolina. I have a piece of clear acrylic over the oculus. See 3.20 or thereabouts.

Hello, Coasterkat. Thanks for your comment. I put rebar inside the blocks around the door area in the lower part but the only rebars I reinforced the brick work with were the 5 complete horizontal rings around the outside up to the 52 degree from the horizontal level. I welded the ends of them and encased them in concrete so that they were in intimate contact with the bricks. As I mentioned in a reply to a previous comment, I don't think it's really practical or safe to try to cinch the hoops up tightly by trying to apply tension to the ends. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the question. Interlocking bricks course-to-course would be tricky because the circumference of each course gets smaller as you build higher. Beyond the 52 degree from horizontal point, there would be no benefit even using interlocking bricks along the course because everything is in compression anyway. Below that level it might still not be an advantage to rely on interlocking bricks to resist the tensile forces trying to pull the bricks apart because the tensile strength of brick is quite low. The lower part of hemispherical domes is almost always supplemented by a sturdy parapet wall or steel hoops or, as in the case of the Pantheon, a substantial collar of concrete.

Well it certainly makes for great acoustics and that's probably why so many churches feature domes and cupolas but probably the real reason is something to do with the copying of one of nature's most efficient shapes whereby you can span large areas with relatively little material and no central supports.

It's more effecitve for any stress in the brickwall. No part get more force as any other as in normal walls. It's more stable then normal stright walls with the least amount of materials and most space inside. No complex roofing with a ring anchor.

18' overall....domed part 10'...it's a hemisphere.

Very smart way to divide the steelbar reinforcement...or scaffolding while building up..Later you can use the same system to reinforce outside after insulate, then concrete it all, as you did too..! I been thinking in this way of building in claybricks as well, in or as my /our coming retirement home back home in philippines, we struckle with hurrycanes as you maybe know..? Thanks for this good idear..

Thanks for the comment, Dolfush. As you probably know, the hoop stress on a hemispherical dome changes from tension to compression at an angle of approximately 52 degrees from the horizontal so it should not be necessary to have external reinforcing hoops above that point. I tapered the concrete cladding from about 8" at the base to1" at the oculus and tried to make the pour continuous. The hoops around the bricks are bonded to the bricks by tucking concrete between the steel hoop and the brick : it's not practically possible (nor safe) to try to "cinch" the hoops up mechanically. Good luck with your project.

For your comment I bought the Gustavino Vaulting books by John Ochsendorf very interesting because it made me go to NY to review my visit to the Grand central station. The dome you made was extraordinary. I was struck by the fact that you placed the brick in the shape of a herringbone like Brunelleschi did in the Cattedrale of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. Right now I'm trying to make an iris just like yours. Would you help me move forward if I could see the internal mechanism, I'll be telling you how it comes out.
