I'm so glad that you're paying attention to the metadata of the items you're scanning! Every bit of information you can identify on each item, can and should be included in the metadata. Just make sure that you create a list, so you always use the same term for the same things. That's absolutely vital. For example, if you were cataloguing correspondence, you wouldn't enter in the metadata "letter" on one item, "ltr" on another, "note" on another, and "correspondence" on another. You'd pick a term and stick to it. The reason for this, is someone in the future won't necessarily know all the various terms you will have used, but if you stick to what is on the list, they will. 😊 You can also "stack" your terms, so you can do "correspondence" for everything that is correspondence, including things like with lawyers, tax offices, etc so it's more specific, and then also make sure to enter dates, participants etc. The reason for all the information being captured separately, is because then someone can say look for everything from Lloyd's of London, by just searching with the name as a single search-term and get everything for them of all types, or you can search for Lloyd's of London + 1920, or Lloyd's of London + damage; Alberta + yoga + photograph, or photograph + Hinchingbrook + Christmas + 1935 etc. It would also be more modern-day things, like when the KZread account was created, so something like "American Viscountess + 2020 + Julie Montagu + COVID-19" and then with those terms you can also apply some of them to other things, like "COVID-19 + revenue + weddings", "Julie Montagu + projects + Italy". I can help you get the hang of that, if it's something you haven't done yet. It's a lot to think about when you first start, but becomes pretty fun (at least I think so), when you get it right, and know that someone 200 years from now can find out what was served in the café during the maker's market, and even more fun if there are photos and/or video!

It would be helpful for you to describe the culture of the upper class of that era, especially regarding childcare as infants were cared for, kept close to and nursed by their mothers beyond the first year. Only under exceptional circumstances did this not occur and this was the first child, a son to boot. These last 2 facts, in particular, make me wonder why Billy’s mother would leave her son for such an extended period of time. It’s understandable why they might not want to take him to India, but the fact that the mother left her son to accompany her husband on a business trip is a bit puzzling. After all, this was not for a few days but a few months. I’ve only heard of royalty doing something akin and am unfamiliar with wealthy Americans leaving their infants for extended periods of time. If you could provide a context for this seemingly acceptable practice that would be helpful.

Watching this video reminds me of when I was sitting down with my mom's mom (my grandmother) and looking through her photo album. Seeing pictures of ancestors and places where they were worked, I was trying to capture the history/stories and try to preserve the oral family history. It's how I got my start on historical events that lead me studying towards my B.A. in history. I only have a few pictures and they mean more to me than anything, and the stories behind. That album is long gone buy the memories it holds. Great work, and do let us know when you graduate with your master's degree, I wonder if they have a online program? Who knows maybe your experience has/will motivate others to pursue this degree as well!!! Remember to wear something that belongs to Alberta at your convocation as she will be there in spirit and was your inspiration!!!

Hi Julie, I’m from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺 and just worked out that the 4th Earl sponsored the voyages of James Cook who discovered Australia and honoured his sponsor by naming the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii) after him. Cook lost his life in the Sandwich Islands in a later expedition. Certainly left his mark,chocolate icecream, sandwiches, Hawaii and Australia 👍🏻👍🏻

Very happy to see the photos of Alberta at Hinchingbrooke . Excellent historic preservation and research! Did the Montague family ever have any connections to the Inchiquin family at Dromoland in Ireland? I just read in the Irish Times and the sad new that Lord Inchiquin Conor O'Brien has passed away at Thomond House a few days ago . He had an amazing life with amazing lineage. Stay well all!

I have alot of pics and letters and items and address books and a Family Bible of my granddad from philadelphia - I loved going thru these items and piecing together family history. I also have family photos and written down history and researched what boat my great grandmom came over in from Watford England. It is a treasure map and I one day will get back to doing our family history (can't do it with a 2 year old lol) I am loving seeing your story come to life with pics and letters.

it’s so amazing that Alberta’s chronicles came to light with you, it seems meant to be, and i think she’d be very pleased that they are being saved from the ravages of time properly. why did she save them all is a question that comes to mind at once, surely a very busy woman with a huge house and household to run, and children, yet she purposefully recorded in picture and correspondence all of their lives, doing as much as getting letters back that she’d sent to have a complete picture of their life at the time. i think she understood in a spiritual way that time would have continuity and that this would have meaning in the future, she had faith in the family and that they would endure, and indeed they have.

This was what I was trying to say to you previously. Frank built the Ridgley House AFTER Clematis Cottage which was Francis' FIRST home on the exact same road and Ridgle is just down Leggett Rd. I had been told by the owner a few years back Iris Friedlander that Betty had become fond of the Margaret Mitchell story that was fashionable ~ Gone With The Wind & so it was why the house was very much in that fashion. But that could not have been right and that was why you were so politely not exactly in agreeance but did not correct me I guess as to not embarrass me. That was kindly as I believe I was not told an accurate story by Iris. I know every inch of that house I hope you get to go inside it someday it is fascinating.
