In which John discusses the announcement of a new project to bring comprehensive tuberculosis care to parts of the Philippines as a blueprint to show what is possible.
If you're a Filipino nerdfighter and want to be kept up to date, let us know! Email nerdfightersphilippines@gmail.com.
The Crash Course Lecture on the history (and present) of tuberculosis will premiere on Monday: / crashcourse
I have to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has been involved in this project behind the scenes for months. Everyone I've worked with at USAID, but especially Cheri Vincent and Atul Gawande, have been awesome, as has the PIH community--especially Garrett Wilkinson and Dr. Salmaan Keshavjee. In the Philippines, I'm so grateful to the Department of Health for prioritizing tuberculosis and all the activists and NGOs who are making this plan a reality. This is just the beginning, but it's been an amazing beginning.

There aren't many corners of the internet where your 'fandom' can pivot to ending TB and not only do people redirect attention to do it- But also see it as an actual community activity that reinforces that 'online fandom' energy too. I'm so grateful for having found this kind of piece of the internet.

Even not as rich as he ever claimed Donald Trump could likewise provide clean drinking water to the whole entire world for 25 years and doesn’t even send a dozen lifestraws when floods happen in his backyard, so it is no surprise that the muskrat and bozos playing with space rockets and satellites are “too busy” to cut a check for what amounts to the income of the ingrown part of their right pinky toenails to save the planet.

Thank you guys for being a beacon of positivity and working to make real change in the world. Social media is used so often to divide and spread hatred. I love that for years now, despite watching other corners of the internet be commodified and used to spread hatred and fear for money, I've always been able to come here and reliably see you guys using social media for good instead of profit and selfishness. You'll never be as noisy or clickable as the extremists, but I'm glad you still have a voice here spreading kindness and fighting for social good. ❤ i wish there were more incentives that brought out the kindness in the majority of people online, but til then at least we have nerdfightaria.

I love seeing the evolution of this community and how, after collectively turning our attention to one problem in one place (maternal mortality in Sierra Leone) and making significant positive change, we are now enthusiastically turning that attention to TB. In hindsight, eating toilet paper while discussing the political situation in Nepal keeps making more sense as an og punishment. Because if this, I've become more aware when I see other groups working this way, even on a smaller scale, and it makes so many things feel more hopeful.

John, I've been a Nerdfighter for (I think) most of my life. I started casually watching in 2010. 14 years ago. A few years ago, when you asked Nerdfighters for money for the Maternal Health Centre in Sierra Leone, I thought to myself, "Sure. That sounds incredible. I hope it works." and I donated what I could at the time. Now, seeing the incredible success of that project, I am grateful to be sitting here, looking at my budgets and thinking "How can I help when it comes time to?" It is an honour and a privilege to be a part of this community and to help where I can. Thank you John. Can't wait to watch the Crash Course video on everyone's (least) favourite disease.

@vlogbrothers Firstly, I'm amazed by ur commitment in both bringing awareness and doing the work in reducing the world suck in every project u undertake. U mentioned that providing the 4% means having a 1st row seat. Does that mean u'll go the site of the project and be able to share videos of the progress? The way u did in Sierra Leone, cause I was watching (rewatching) those videos yesterday and they r great because of the way u really showed the progress and had the people involved speak. It kinda humanises the whole situation in a way, if that makes sense, like we r seeing actual progress and not math statistics. Those videos r inspiring and not making the situation into something pitying. So anyway, if u r able to share any thing of that sort I think it'll be great.

I'm hoping for the best but I'm also weary of what might happen. Corruption is rampant in the PH government especially with our president being the son of our previous dictator. i REALLY hope initiatives like this will not only cause massive and historic impacts in these communities, but also have such a massive coverage and repercussions that those guys who can afford to singlehandedly end issues like TB (but are too busy renaming twitter or whatever it is they do with their time) feel inspired and/or pressured to take action. at the end of the day, curing TB is just the beginning. and, unfortunately, only money can cause any significant change.
