    @@littleowl3045 At no point has the series ever tried to make it out as though Snow White is infallible or pure. Quite the contrary. If you misinterpreted the show so badly, that’s on you, not the character. David’s far from a model parent himself. He’s disgustingly overprotective over his adult daughter whose love life is none of his business. He’s awful to Hook for a very long time. It’s clear that he’s never gotten fully used to a world where he doesn’t get to go off rescuing damsels in distress, and regularly has to be reminded that his daughter can take care of herself. Mary Margaret did a much better job at adapting to their reality. He’s just biding time in the hopes that he can return to a world where he’s a hero and a prince. Never mind that many of his friends likely prefer being his friends and not his subjects. And even in this part of the series, he absolutely fails Emma as much as Snow. It’s less obvious because he’s not the one torn between supporting their grown daughter and protecting their helpless infant-we rarely see him caring for their son before Snow’s under a sleeping curse and he has no choice. But you can see in his face in those scenes that he was every bit as hesitant around her as Snow. Mary Margaret, at least, is immediately remorseful. He continues to defend not supporting her, even when she’s going to change an integral part of herself. Instead of saying we should support her for who she is, like Snow, he prioritizes his own desire for her physical safety over her emotional wellbeing. Even going as far as saying “maybe she’d be better off if she were “normal.” If that’s your idea of a loving, supportive father, I feel sorry for you. In any case, you’ve completely missed the theme of the show if you believe that we’re supposed to view any character as purely good or evil.

    The irony of this scene is that I had the sneaking suspicion that had Emma grown up in the Enchanted Forest, she would have been closer to Charming than Snow. I think it would have been incredibly difficult for Emma to live up to being the daughter of the 'fairest in the land', the pure and perfect Snow White. I know it sounds mocking, but I'm not, just Emma would have had a difficult time living up to Snow's standards.

  • @taylorb9484

    @taylorb9484

    7 жыл бұрын

    Probably not, actually. Snow has expectations of what is right and wrong, but she has never (since living in the forest as a bandit) tried to judge others relative to her own status as "fairest." Emma would have been close to both parents, and if anything Emma being influenced by Regina has driven Snow and Emma apart more than Snow's "perfection."

  • @TiffanyAllen1784

    @TiffanyAllen1784

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@taylorb9484 Yeah, I’d say a relationship with Snow would be more likely to ground her than one with David. He spent most of the curse in a coma. He never really adapted to Storybrooke. His actions in Camelot-choices that almost put them all in serious danger-make it pretty clear to he’s far too attached to the “I’m a hero, we’re the good guys” mentality. Even when what they he did to Maleficent and Lily comes to light, he never shows the level of remorse his wife does. His views are a lot more black and white than Snow’s. She knows she was a brat as a child. She remembers being a thief. She was horrible to the people who loved her while she was under the effects of the forgetting potion. We see alternate reality Emma. She’s not like either of her parents. She’s the privileged princess they both wanted her to be. She’s ready to hand over the key to their kingdom and betray all their subjects to save her own parents. She wasn’t a hero. She needed the catalyst of the curse to become one, just as her parents needed to face that their actions WERE self-serving rather than heroic, before they could actually become heroes. Emma has an actual, healthy relationship with her mother, despite how unusual it is. They were friend first and she was looking out for her even then. They’ve worked through the challenges in their relationships and become better for it. But David just goes straight into creepy overprotective father mode, giving her boyfriend a hard time, and inserting himself into a part of his adult daughter’s life that isn’t any of his business. Hopefully once all the curses ended, he mellowed out, but he was far from an ideal parent prior to that, and we’re given no indication that he would have been in the Enchanted Forest.

    She wasn’t afraid of Emma, she was afraid of what Emma could accidentally do to her son. I would hope that if you had a defenseless infant and an adult child who was setting things on fire, your first reaction would be to protect the baby. Perhaps if she wasn’t sleep deprived and busy trying to raise their baby and be temporary mayor while he was off playing sherif #2, she would have had the capacity to react differently. But we didn’t see him play an active role in his son’s life until his wife was asleep and he had no alternative. Then when Snow is remorseful and worried about Emma’s emotional state and their parent-child relationship, he’s still fixated on her physical safety and even goes so far as to say that it might be better to let her change an integral part of herself if it keeps her safe. He failed. Just as much as Snow. Maybe more.

    Albus Nix I don't think he would've, based on how he's acted around Emma other times. Snow of course sees her as a daughter, I can tell she loves her. But often it's savior first, daughter second. David's not perfect but there's a reason why Emma is closer to him.

  • @taylorb9484

    @taylorb9484

    7 жыл бұрын

    ***** Actually, if anything Charming would be _more_ likely to say and do the kind of things that Snow said and did, if he sees her "as his kid" first. Most parents would have responded the exact same way that Snow did. Emma endangered her parent by acting emotionally and rashly, which few parents respond positively to. If anything, Snow's initial reaction shows how much she sees Emma as her daughter, because if she saw Emma as the savior she would have gone into de-escalation and diplomacy mode immediately. Snow knows what it means to be a leader and a guardian, and if that had been how she was viewing Emma in that scene, she would have reacted in a much different way than speaking sharply to Emma.

  • @xCanYouFeelTheLovex

    @xCanYouFeelTheLovex

    7 жыл бұрын

    Albus Nix I don't think Snow gets magic, though. They didn't know Emma would have powers when they knew she'd be the savior, it's still something to adjust to. Again, there are times Snow takes the whole savior thing for granted. Regardless, there wasn't just fear in that scene. There was an earlier one with the bottle, how Emma made it boil, because she was jealous. Snow was definitely scared then, as was everyone. (Again, normal reactions, but she still saw fear.) I get they were in shock, but given that Emma couldn't help it (as you seem to imply that she could, by saying snow thought she should calm down), a better action would be to comfort her.

  • @taylorb9484

    @taylorb9484

    7 жыл бұрын

    ***** They've known Emma for TWO YEARS by now. They've known she has magic since Cora infiltrated Storybrooke and nearly killed Rumple. In the previous scene, Snow was worried for Neal, since Emma was showing subconscious anger. She wasn't afraid because all of a sudden Emma was "using magic"; she was afraid because she realized Emma was more jealous of Neal than she perhaps even realized. And what Snow was referring to was the event at the police station. Everyone seems to think that Snow showed fear at that point. SHE DIDN'T. She showed justifiable anger and irritation. Additionally, you were the one who claimed that Snow was viewing Emma primarily as the savior and not as her daughter. My point was that if that were true, the comforting/de-escalation approach would have been the one that Snow would have defaulted to. We've seen how both she and Regina use that for people who aren't family/who they don't care for. It is precisely because Snow _does_ view Emma primarily as her daughter that she spoke angrily.

    @@kacie8187 David spent time with Emma-an adult with her own life instead of the baby he left Snow to raise-because she was going on the adventures he wanted to go on while Snow was just trying to be a better parent to Neal than they could be to Emma. Whereas the time Snow spent with Emma wasn’t about chasing bad guys or protecting the town, it was about trying to help Emma recover from her abandonment issues and fear of commitment. She actively fought to repair old wounds and help their daughter move forward. He focused on adventures. Thinking that his time with Emma is somehow more valuable than Snow’s is like thinking that the stereotypical workaholic dad who takes his kid fishing on the weekend is somehow a better parent than the mother busy raising the kid the rest of the time. It’s a pretty fucked up interpretation. Also, use your brain for a minute here. Ginnifer Goodwin has two babies in the space of a couple years. Josh Dallas was able to film a bunch more scenes with Jennifer Morrison because he wasn’t busy carrying and birthing their children. He was more present in the show because he could be, not because Charming is a better parent. Goodwin was busy doing the same thing that Snow had to do-putting the baby first. That responsibility almost always falls to the mother. The actors have discussed their parenting choices and how their kids’ needs come first at length. One of them is typically home with the kids. More often than not, that’s her. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why Dallas and Morrison has more scenes together for a while. It does take a misogynist to decide it means Charming is a better parent.

    I just want to say how QUICKLY her parents and everyone present turned on her in this episode, out of all them Mary Margaret should be the one to understand her the most, lets all just put aside their relationship as Mother and Daughter for now, and go back to S1 when they had no knowledge of who each other were, and the whole town turned on Mary Margaret because of the "Affair" with David Nolan (I might add) calling her a HOME WREAKER and a TRAMP spray painted across her car, cause she was sooooo LOVESICK. She was so depressed btw, on top of that she was FRAMED, ACCCUSED and ARRESTED for the murder of Catherine which she didn't commit of course. Orchestrated by our very own EVIL QUEEN Regina. And then, DAVID NOLAN (who was the first one to be accused. And Mary Margaret stood by him even after some evidence showed up) left her, I think she might've hit rock bottom there. And WHO was there to STOOD by her and DEFENDED her? THROUGHTOUT her whole, lets call it her "Predicament" EMMA!!!! Idk about you, but that's one thing I would never forget I mean EVIDENCE were pilling up pointing a big fat arrow towards me, and I could go to prison lol, but I guess they forgot about that. HAHA. I understand the need to protect your son, but..... I mean no wonder EMMA was very terrified of her powers she had no reassurance specially from her parents. So YEAH, SNOW I would say FAILED her as her, not just as her parents but also as her Friend. And the snow queen's plan to put doubt in Emma kind of worked, I guess. LMAO

    Yes, we. And he continued to fail her while Snow was instantly remorseful. She reacted more strongly than he did because she was busy trying to protect the baby he was too busy playing sherif to help raise. If the baby had been in his arms, (a rare event until they were cursed and he had to parent when Snow was asleep) he would most certainly have reacted similarly. His relationship with Snow is superficial at best, and his weird obsession over who his adult daughter chooses to date (none of his business) is gross. Every moment of real growth and healing happens between Snow and Emma, not David and Emma. He’s too busy playing the hero to make an effort to help Emma heal from her past.

They were not only doing what was best for the kingdom, but what was best for Emma too. She needed them yes, but they are not perfect themselves. It's like what Elsa said "Loved ones aren't enough, you have to love yourself". Even if Snow had been understanding, Emma would still have difficulty controlling her powers. Besides, I just think that they're growing more casual to one another as a family, less reverent. This is one of the obstacles they have to overcome.

    I’m not sure what you’ve been paying attention to, but there is a lot more fandom devoted to the Emma and Snow relationship, which has depth, than the weird, dude trying to play protective daddy to his grown daughter whose relationships are none of his business dynamic. Snow is integral to the series. Charming is not. It’s why they nearly killed him off in the pilot. It’s why the actors themselves, before they began dating, decided that he would be the one to leave the show if things got bad between them. Every major moment of growth and healing Emma has comes from her relationship with her mother, her son, Hook, or her friendship with Regina. The superficial sherif crap isn’t what did it. You missed every major emotional arc if you think she has a better relationship with Charming. Whenever they’ve been in danger, she goes straight to her mom. Snow was immediately remorseful here. David is still trying to justify not supporting her later, saying “maybe it’s better if she’s just normal.” He’s thinking about her physical safety-something she’s clearly capable of handling herself without some white knight father figure. Snow’s thinking about accepting their daughter for who she is, and helping her heal from years of abandonment. Not once do we EVER see Charming try to address that or even take responsibility for it. Snow does over and over again and still gets berated by misogynistic fans.

    I rewatch the episode. The thing is Emma warned everybody that her powers are out of control unless they take on the warning everybody failed they should heed the warning. When I grabbed her hand she was worried about hurting him. We don't heat a warning then technically accidents happen.

    Snow made a snap judgment at Emma when she yelled after David got hit, but you have you realize, they're still relatively new to the parent thing. Neal is their only way to experience parenthood from the beginning... Emma has a lot of walls up (as Snow said), and yes, most of them are because of her parents abandoning her. But, say your child hits their father with something (albeit, not a light pole), your instinct is to react. To tell the child no.. That's what Snow was trying to do, but she didn't realize how harsh it had come out, and just to whom she was speaking... Yes, Emma is their child, but she's not a little kid.. When she heard Snow yell, it added onto the already intense amount of pressure and fear that Emma was feeling.. I get that Snow had gotten scared, but so was Emma.. She was terrified.

    No, David did. Snow pretty clearly said they should be out trying to find her and stop her from doing that. David talked her out of it, but everyone in the comments is tearing Snow apart for a moment of weakness while she was afraid for her family’s safety. They both failed her, but at least Snow took responsibility for it.

    Except for the fact that he agrees with her that they failed. They share a heart, and they've both failed to be there for Emma when they most wanted to. Each of them feels the weight of the other's failures (especially concerning Emma), and they both will be ready to take responsibility even if that responsibility is unwarranted. David would have said the same things to Emma had Snow gotten hurt instead.

    Yea, people are being a little hard on Snow. I would've flinched away from Emma too after her hands reached for my baby which not more than two seconds ago brought a bottle she was holding to a boil. Not to mention she was just talking very passive aggressively how she's "totally not jealous" of all the attention Little Neal is getting that she never got. I might've wanted to give her a minute to cool down, too. literally. And when she yelled at Emma, I didn't get the sense she was "frightened" of her. She was pissed! She just hurt David and was acting like a lunatic frankly. Like, come on, Emma. Get ahold of yourself, you've been normal for 28 yrs and for the past two/three yrs have hardy ever used your powers and now you suddenly can't control yourself? I wanted to yell at her too, Stop being a baby, you gave Henry the smallest scratch I've ever seen and have done more than thousands of dollars worth of property damage! Get a grip! Haha

    You try being a 28 year old woman who has been an orphan for all of her life, made to feel unwanted and not valued. Then given magic and told you are responsible for saving an entire town, which includes your son of whom you had to give away and your parents of whom gave you away, from magical beings of whom always taunt you with those facts of your difficult background. It's not easy. Give the poor woman a break.

    I agree with you up until the point where you start blaming Emma. Snow’s initial gut reaction was how most people would react. And let’s remember that this is around the time that she’s overwhelmed and exhausted because she’s temporarily the mayor and has a new baby that she’s been left to raise while David’s out playing sherif. But Emma is out of control because she’s afraid. It’s not her fault.

    um?? neal wasn't a replacement, snow admitted that she wanted to have another child in a previous series because she felt she had lost the chance to be a real parent to emma despite *already looking out for her and caring for her* during the curse and *continuing to do so* post-curse even though emma is a *grown adult* snow could have easily chosen not to become a mother to emma after the curse broke and she could have gone back to treating emma like her friend instead of her daughter "the new kid" are you serious? he is a literal baby, so *of course* he needs more attention than emma does (i thought that was obvious). that doesn't mean emma is loved less or valued less so i don't know if you're projecting or just haven't grasped the kind of relationship snow and emma have but mate, you've got it all the way wrong.

    David barely had any relationship with Emma. He spent time with her (instead of his wife who’s just given birth and was exhausted trying to raise their son) because she was off on the adventures he clearly needs to be fulfilled. Not because he was trying to bond with her. The minute he gets an opportunity to go off on a side quest with Hook or Arthur he takes it. While Regina is trying to keep her from going dark, or Snow is trying to help her figure out who she is in Neverland. He’s fully prepared to move his wife, newborn son, adult daughter who’s been through hell, and his young grandson back to a dangerous land full of ogres and destruction and inequality if it means that he gets to be where he wants to be, doing what he wants to do. Snow is the one focused on their daughter’s emotional wellbeing and their son’s basic needs. She’s the one willing to give up her own adventures to provide their traumatized daughter and helpless son with stability and safety. His relationship with Emma is superficial at best.
