Looks like the roof was collapsed from an earlier fire, storm damage or structural damage. Plus you can see it was converted to 4 apartments (quadruple meter box seen at the corner of the house in the opening shot), and when a big old house is turned to apartments, it is usually really tore up on the inside with few original fixtures / details left.

The roof looked like it had a lot of damage to it. Would have been nice if they would have done a video walk through before lighting it off. The yard was well kept. Nice stone retaining wall. The vampires living in the basement weren’t too happy.

If they did not conduct drills, they blew a great opportunity. A department I was on we trained on a house. We split it into two days. 1st day was drills. Advancing hose lines, search, ventilation, building construction, RIT. We invented our mutual aid partners and worked on tanker shuttle and command structure. 2nd day burned it to the ground. Never ever never miss an opportunity to learn or teach.

To all asking "why, this house looked to be good" it usually comes down to the property owner want's an old run down house removed and it's cheaper to let the FD use it for training in which they burn it to the ground leaving next to nothing but ash to clean up or like in the case of one I got to photo/video about 20 years ago when a friend was a volunteer FF, the house was only 40 y/o and still lived in until a month prior to the burn, the owners were in their 60s and ready to move away for retirement and sold it an the 20 acres it sat on to a developer who planed to build around 40 new houses and again if they donate it it saves them demolition costs and in same states may get you a tax write off.

The fire chief was yelling " 1, 2, 3" so that those in back of the house could switch from containing trees and yard to make sure the house fire was being kept contained and wouldn't spread to neighboring homes. It's standard procedure during containment training. A family friend of mine who was a member of a fire department taught me this.

When the FD uses a donated house for a training fire once there are done they bring it to the ground by preforming a controlled burn, they are spraying it to keep the fire contained to that particular house and not spread from it.

Firefighters training with a real fire should treat it like a real fire. Way too many firefighters not wearing their turnout gear and then handling equipment to go active on the fire. Very poor training practices. Give it a “D” grade. Practice as if it’s the real thing!
