    The reason why janissaries are better to produce in conquered cities is based on history. Janissaries were ottoman soldiers that were “foreign-born” (Christian countries conquered) that were raised Muslim and trained to be soldiers.

    This is a world conquest civ, you can have so many cities and never have amenities or loyalty issues. The extra strategic resources could be much better than people may expect due to needing more strategic resources to build large armies, plus later on maintenance of units such as tanks as you said. Other domination civs may not be able field as large armies as before due to needing strategics for UUs such as legions. Not to mention the Bazaar helps with building railroads require iron and coal allowing you to connect cities with more production and move speed (all amazing for conquest) and also more power plants. Also more uranium equals more nukes and GDRs (assuming you reach that point without conquering the world). I believe the way you use the Grand Vizier is to place him in a high production conquered city (do any early war with a civ) , build up Janissaries and siege units. Then place him in the next city you want to conquer from the AI, then once you conquer that city move him to the next city you want to conquer. If you are about to lose a city to loyalty from the AI you are at war with in 3 turns, move him to their capital.

    So what's great about this civ is how closely the bonuses stick to history. The actual janissaries were pulled from conquered people, so that the Sultan was surrounded by foreigners who relied on him for power. Unique governor is also perfect, because the Ottomans used their actual governors to create very powerful and hard to exit strategic bonds with populations. Also they kept Western Europeans out of the Mediterranean using alliances with Barbary pirates, and were terrifying conquerors because of their bombards.

    Holy shit the Ottomans are good. I was saying how I'd be choosing Hungary for my first GS game, but now the Ottomans are stealing that right from under Mattias's feet. To say the LA is good would be an understatement. Right from the start, +20% production towards units is like having a free god of the forge pantheon - and it stacks! With just another promotion, you can stop production and send the governor towards your target for an early war - +10 strength against districts may not apply against any units, but +20% production should insure that you have a numerical advantage. Hell, +10 against districts might be enough to wipe out a civ with only 2-3 cities before they can even build units in response. The first look suggests that you can't establish him in a civ who you're at war with, but a ten tile radius is still huge - even the most minor of forward settling can fix that issue. For god's sake, most of your immediate neighbors are going to be ten tiles from you in the first place. From there, the Ottomans are the only civ so far (and idk if Phoenecia or Eleanor has any reason to match it) that has a bonus towards removing grievances against them - meaning offensive wars and city capture can happen more often while making friends / alliances, a mechanic that becomes more important than ever (and world congress in general may be a way to nerf domination - Ottomans won't have to worry about that quite as much). The more peaceful tree gives Ottomans a slight incentive for playing diplomatically, with extra alliance points (presumably 0.5 points/turn) and a way to keep your ally alive. It's nowhere near the specialized power that Ottomans have for domination, but it could come in handy. The final promotion sounds crap if you're trying to play peaceful, but in Domination it can work if you want to stop a war mid-way and let your grievances cool down - even if you'd otherwise be facing massive loyalty pressure. The UA is almost as good. +50% production towards siege units sounds like it'll only apply to the bombard tree, and not rams or towers, but catapults can still be dangerous when combined with an early encampment. The +5 attack is just icing on the cake, as it'll stack with the LA for absurdly fast city capture. Speaking of, having zero population loss on city capture is huge. The biggest penalty for domination in the base game is how, past the early game, none of your conquests can build up to be as strong as your core cities. This is mainly due to the population loss, affecting both initial production and any districts you want to build. Removing this entirely is a game changer, as the Ottomans will be the only civ around who can use mid/lategame domination beyond just pushing a domination wincon. +1 amenity and +4 loyalty is just stupid, mostly b/c it's a power creep against Zulu and Persia, even the Aztecs to a degree. Ottoman's UB is deceptively good, mostly b/c the first look didn't go into detail about it. +1 gold from the base bank isn't that impressive, but gold isn't what you're going to be building this for. +1 amenity from each luxury improvement, and +1 strategic resource generation from each resource in the city is what makes this so damn good. Commerical hubs are already priority districts for giving you extra trade routes, and with this it can double as both entertainment districts and encampments. You might even want to prioritize banking over gunpowder, as it'll let you overcome the limitations of mass producing... Their Janissaries. Good fucking lord, these Janissaries. It's not the +5 combat strength that makes these op. It's the -50% production cost. The population tradeoff isn't even that strong a downside, either. By the time you get to gunpowder, you'd likely have already built all the priority districts you want in your cities, so using your excess population for a tech push this strong is a no-brainer. What's more, this directly encourages you to go to early war - after all, a well-developed city you took in ancient/classical era should be able to pump out Janissaries no problem, and without their tradeoff of population loss. And unlike Caroleans, musketmen are your go-to option for renaissance warfare - only rivaled by spamming frigates, which isn't even a problem with the free promotion you get. Is your enemy specialized in ground troops? Grab battlecry. Frigate spam? Grab tortoise. Melee units arguably have some of the best promotions, and being one step closer to urban warfare makes Janissaries that much more dangerous. Even the most fortified and militarized of enemies wouldn't be able to stem the horde of these monsters. The Corsairs are a little less certain, though. Assuming that their unlock is yet another medieval UU that is dependent on a civic, it's likely that they're unlocked at Mercenaries or Naval Tradition. Their unlocks aside, a 40/50 unit in medieval is no joke, and is something that treads on Indonesia's domain for early naval conquest. That said, I'm certain that this won't be an impactful UU, as unlike Jongs, you can't prebuild Corsairs to overcome the lack of a production policy for medieval navies. By the time you have the production policy, you're back to the same problem of privateers - being outclassed in combat. Corsairs are likely going to be an expensive way of competing with Norway for who can pillage the most tiles - which as devs have stated, got a buff that lets it scale with the game's progress. Maybe those scaled rewards are enough to make up for such an expensive UU?

    I'm also hyped for the Ottomans and cant wait to play it. For now my first strategy that i can come up with is probably to conquer a city state that is close to me. early game they cant defend and the bonus that it can give you later on will prob be less good that a city that can spam your Janissaries.

    You overlooked Ibrahim's Serasker promotion a bit. That thing is completely broken. 10 tiles is a HUGE distance and +10 combat strength against cities is very strong. If 10 tiles is somehow too far away, then you forward settle to a spot that will reach it. You can start your conquest at any point when you get that promotion, but you get a massive power spike when you unlock Catapults. The first game I did when Gathering Storm came out was a small Pangea map with the Ottoman's on Deity and it was the easiest domination game I've ever played (having all the civs in a close proximity helped, but I'm more referring to their bonuses). Their damage on city's is broken. Because if how good the Serasker promotion is, I suspect that they will be a good domination civ on any map type, since the bonus applies to any unit, not just siege units. You would just need to plan a way to get Ibrahim in range of your targeted city (put him in a neighboring civ/city-state or forward settle). Serasker boosted Frigates on an Archipelago map sounds like fun! Would love to see you give that a shot!

  • @e2driver99
    @e2driver995 жыл бұрын

    Hey Potato, I think you may underestimate Sulaman’s early conquest ability. If the civic tree holds, then you have 4 governor promotions when you enter the Classic age and upgrade your government and build the warlord building in your government plaza. If you spend 3 of these promoting Ibrahim (very costly as you noted because of what you give up) then Ibrahim could give you 20% unit production, +5 unit bonus and a +10 attack bonus on defensible districts. Placing Ibrahim in a city you wish to take would give your archers +15 attacking the city. How many UU’s get +15? What could a horseman with a battering ram do to a city with +15? On a crowded Pangea, I might even sacrifice early settlements to take out my neighbor(s) and back fill some cities in late classic era/early medieval era.

  • @danieleaton5444
    @danieleaton54445 жыл бұрын

    It does look like you should expand a little bit before the medieval era.. maybe take a city state or two in the direction of your eventual expansion as those conquered cities will be the places you will start pumping out the janissaries. So my guess is.. expand your borders.. until comfortable.. then grab a city state and turn that city into an encampment production center.. and then in the medieval.. pump out janissaries, and march them to glory.. If you wait to do that initial conquering, you will end up not being able to crank them out as that pop loss in your regular cities would be too punishing.

  • @LokiLaughs2
    @LokiLaughs25 жыл бұрын

    The 2nd Ibrahim promotion is huge. 3 turns to establish in an enemy city then +10 combat strength when attacking enemy city centers within 10 tiles. That's a huge bonus in the ancient and classical era that can also stack with urban warfare on warriors/swordsmen for a +20 bonus. Also because Janisary have a 120 production cost instead of 240 it's only a 30 production upgrade for swordsmen instead of a 150 production difference so the upgrade cost on experienced units of swordsmen will be 80% cheaper

  • @AllisonIsLivid
    @AllisonIsLivid5 жыл бұрын

    The Idea behind Ibrahim is clear: drop him in a city you mean to conquer, use his bonuses there to speed up the seige and battle for the territory, and then leave him there for a bit, to mollify the new claim, AND speed up the production of Janissary and Bombard units (or whatever you have in that era) in the captured city. The whole time, he can also be reducing the ability of enemies to counter-attack, by giving them less time to use their grievances against you. And if you ever find that a domination strategy isn't your best path forward anymore, you can drop him in some allies capital to build up your alliances and help your war economy catch up with science or culture or whatever. It's a really elegant design I think, and should be fun to play with.

  • @AllisonIsLivid

    @AllisonIsLivid

    I misread the reduces grievances thing, and thought for a moment it worked by adjacency to enemy cities. So it does seem less useful, but it could still help out if the initial push to domination stalls. He's not just making your invasion more powerful, he's shielding you from repercussions.

A ten tile radius is ridiculously large, even if you aren't direct neighbors it would be possible to still receive the bonus strength vs districts.

    Yes it is a BOOST of 50% or a 33% discount. Let say a thingy cost 100 production and a city generates 10 per turn. NORMAL = 100/10 = 10 turns OTTOMANS = 100/(10x1.5)=6.6 so 7 turns. 7 turns is a 30% discount. Mathed.

    So Ottomans are basically a snowball conquest choice. Once they get rolling, they'll pick up huge momentum, but until they can start cranking Jannisaries from conquered cities, they dont have a large advantage of any kind.

    right this is a medieval/renaissance power spike, that means in pvp you just have to crush him before this time, while he s weak imp that's why he s maybe less strong than others early warmonger civs. in civ5 for example, the strongest units pvp were the camel archers from arabia, and people used to attack him before he gets instoppable, that s why arabian were very good but not god tier. i feel the same here. still he looks like fun to play vs ai

    I would not be surprised if the Janissary's cost is nerfed a bit before the game actually comes out, only 120 for a musketman is so cheap it might break the balance. Having played the Dutch with the "Steel and Thunder: Unique Units" Mod its honestly just silly how quickly they can be build.

    Well you're only going to get that price on conquered cities, which may tend to be the weakest cities. So while it's quite powerful to make those cities useful, it's not as strong as if you could build a powerful industrial capital or first founding and crank from that. However, if you can manage to capture strong production centers, those super cheap infantry can then snowball into a dominant force.

    Huh, didn't think of it like that. That does mean that Ottomans will be effective at defending themselves, being able to turn their tradeoff into a win/win. However, a city lost is a city lost, and if you're being pushed back when you've got Janissaries, then you're already in a bad spot. Not to mention, this ability to effectively raze your own cities only works when you've got Janissaries unlocked. If you're getting rushed in the early game, then you're just going to have to rely on your LA to keep yourself alive.

    I mean no offense but I can't stay quiet. You do realize that the ottoman empire was the greatest world power for a few centuries and only shrunk to today's turkey after WW1 right? also they are not really in the middle east. I know that you just tried to be funny be you would never I have written that about Russia, or Hungary. I just wanted to express that Turkey and the ottoman empire is western power that build itself/conquered the eastern roman empire.They mostly the same heritage that most Europeans The only big difference is religion. Cliffnote by a French in a country where 10% of the population is arab instead of black. PS: I went to University in new jersey, Its a cool that has place in my heart, but please you civ player you should know more about this!
