The tech has come a LOOOOONG way since the 'Wolf Ears' of the 1980s. At this price I'm going to have to stick to my sound-deadening cans though; too much cool stuff, too little money.

Walker Razors with aftermarket gel cups are my recommendation for most folks.

Don't have the cowboy hat issue so I was thinking I'd stick with my old school ear muffs... But I do have a pair of eargasm plugs I've been using at concerts. They are "good enough" for a passive set. So if I can reduce from 2 different to 1 single, and have the electronic that allows voice through that has value.

Dang, that's some expensive ears. But cheaper than needing hearing aids! What others did you compare to in your research?

This video comes at an opportune moment as I'm finally getting serious about buying ear pro in preparation for my first range day. I noticed these on Brownells and, while I'm also one of 'the poors,' technically, I've been seriously considering them as I'm fortunate enough to have low expenses for the foreseeable future and no small amount of savings. Now, the other option I've been considering is to get the 3M squishies (NRR 33dB) and double up with a pair of Walker Xcel 100s (NRR 26dB), which are significantly cheaper at $100 (+$25 for the gel pads). Do you have any insight as to whether this combination would be more protective? Because it seems like the Noizebarriers list several values for noise reduction and I'm not sure how to read what I'm looking at and how those values interact with each other.

The different rating for these is based on which inserts (flange vs foam) you use. I haven't heard great things about any of the in-ear offerings from Walker, BUT if you're relatively new to shooting I highly recommend the base model Walker Razors, and then adding some gel cups (you can find on Amazon). For the money, that's a hard setup to beat.

@@SapperGentleman btw, the noizebarriers don't happen to have bluetooth, do they? I don't recall seeing it as a feature.
