    Sirvalorsax hello. So, I’ve been playing on this piece for a couple of months now. It feels great and sounds great, but the ligature it comes with is quite....janky. As you’ve said, the mouthpiece is extremely slim and doesn’t fit with most tenor ligs. Do you have any ligature recommendations that would actually fit this mouthpiece?

    We had no problem with this fitted onto our new Yamaha Tenor sax after applying cork grease, worked fine. Seriously, no problems! Fabulous sound effect on the stairwell, must try and do a recording with that! Sounds like a saxophone should, love your playing! Have you tried Legere signature reeds? They are consistent and solid!

    Great review bro, thanks for posting this!! I play a jody jazz dv chi 9*, but I found one of these repro links essentially BNIB in my boxes of old stuff (amongst other treasures) and couldn't remember what was special/different from a normal link! Btw, great sound all over the horn but you palm keys and up have got a special something to em!

    I just wanted to say thank you for doing all of these videos and sharing your info, experience and expertise. I ordered this mouthpiece based off this video to see if it could turn around my ‘35 Buescher Art Deco I’ve been fighting with. Any mouthpiece I tried the intonation would be way out of wack, but perfectly fine on my New Wonder. The Otto Link has turned that Buescher into a keeper and a real powerhouse! Thanks for helping make my number two, about to sell horn into my other number one. 😀

    Cool. I was wondering about the neck size on that really old horn. Have you had issues with the small bore of this mouthpiece fitting or does it fit well on your horn?

  • @muttomatic

    @muttomatic

    5 жыл бұрын

    Sirvalorsax the Buescher has a pretty tiny neck opening so it fit great. However, it won’t fit far enough on my New Wonder to tune it. I would have to get that neck reworked for the Otto Link, but I have a Brilhart Carlsbad and Selmer Classic that sound phenomenal on the New Wonder. The Otto belongs to the Buescher.

    I have watched each of your link videos. Thanks for such great reviews. Why do you choose 6* in the Modern Vintage when you play bigger tip openings on your other Links? Is there an advantage to the smaller tip opening in this design?

  • @Sirvalorsax

    I think they maybe had to choose between creating an "authentic vintage" product with sizes that match older pieces vs making modern changes that reduce the vintage authenticity of a more modern design. In other words, new horns today just come with larger bore neck sizes. I understand why they chose to go this route with the design and for me, its worth investing in a separate smaller bore neck but for some it may not warrant the extra cost for only playing one mouthpiece. I like having the option of playing smaller vintage pieces so I'll make the investment with either Warburton or Yamaha necks.

    I would try some reeds that you would normally consider too hard. I wouldn't go up a reed strength yet but try the stiffer ones in the size that you normally play first. I like stiffer reeds for this piece because it's so free blowing.

    I'm currently doing a scientific approach to understanding how saxophones work in my latests videos. I find it disturbing that so many of us don't really understand the basic science behind our livelihood. It would be inconceivable if Mario Andretti didn't understand the principles of aerodynamics or if Bruce Lee didn't understand the human anatomy. Why should we be any different? I hope that my simplification of the basic science behind our thing can provide an easy to learn starting point for my fellow saxophonists. Have a good one!

    So I am wondering was this the first one you ordered or did you order more than a few and this one was the best of the batch? Link has been notorious for their lack of quality control in the modern era and I have never been able to find a modern one that didn’t sound tubby and dull. My current piece is a late ‘70’s- early ‘80’s 6*STM that sounds a lot like this piece you play in the vid. I think this is the “sleeper” era of links that many overlook....lol. This modern vintage sounds amazing though. Sounds like there is a lot of flexibility, which is such a noticeable hallmark of a good Link.

    Hello. I like to do my mouthpiece reviews under various acoustic conditions which is why I use the dry room vs close reflection vs the high reflection area. I feel like this gives the viewer a much better idea of what the mouthpiece will sounds like on various gigs, different sound people, with other horns ect. Its not possible for me to actually test the pieces under all these conditions for videos like these. I also notice certain acoustic properties that only reveal themselves when the sound is reflected back this way. Keep in mind, all of these recordings are done with room acoustics and NO digital sounds effects of any kind whatsoever.
