Otto Cycle (Used in Gasoline Engines):
Otto Cycle (Used in Gasoline Engines):
Intake Stroke: The piston moves down, drawing in a fuel-air mixture through the intake valve.
Compression Stroke: The piston moves up, compressing the fuel-air mixture to a high pressure and temperature.
Combustion Stroke: A spark plug ignites the compressed mixture, causing a rapid combustion or explosion. This pushes the piston down, generating power.
Exhaust Stroke: The piston moves up, expelling the burned gases through the exhaust valve.
The Otto cycle follows a constant volume heat addition during combustion.
Brayton Cycle (Used in Gas Turbines):
Compression: Air is drawn into the engine and compressed to a high pressure using a compressor.
Combustion: Fuel is injected into the compressed air and burned, creating high-temperature gases.
Expansion: The hot gases expand through a turbine, driving it and producing power.
Exhaust: The exhaust gases are expelled, and some of the energy is used to drive the compressor.
The Brayton cycle is an open cycle, as fresh air continuously enters the system.
Diesel Cycle (Used in Diesel Engines):
Intake Stroke: Similar to the Otto cycle, the piston moves down, drawing in air through the intake valve.
Compression Stroke: The piston moves up, compressing the air to a high pressure and temperature. No fuel is present yet.
Fuel Injection: At the top of the compression stroke, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber.
Combustion Stroke: The fuel ignites due to the high temperature from compression, causing combustion. This pushes the piston down, generating power.
Exhaust Stroke: The piston moves up, expelling the burned gases through the exhaust valve.
The Diesel cycle follows a constant-pressure heat addition during combustion.
These cycles are idealized representations of the processes occurring in internal combustion engines. In reality, there may be variations and additional components to optimize efficiency, control emissions, and ensure smooth operation. However, understanding the basic principles of these cycles provides a foundation for comprehending how these engines work.
