【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

ちゃんと家具の下に避難するなんて偉いね。自分は地震体験したとき、緊張で体が動かなかったよ。
ハナちゃん、何か全てを諦めてしまったかのように、階段で途方に暮れるの可愛いすぎます(*^^*)そしてコタローくん、階段登って上から覗いたりするの賢い(*^^*)

昔から、いつも映像をよく見ています。 翻訳機なので正確かわかりません。 韓国人です。 私は日本が好きです。そしてコウタロウハナも好きです。 日本は地震が発生しますが、何の被害もないようにお願いします。
They way they peek out from under the bed, Kotaros eating, Hanas laying on the stairs and the squeaking they make is just so so so cute! I don’t understand how you fight the urge to pick them up and snuggle them all day long :)

Hana laying on the stair after the quake just breaks my heart. Poor little being was afraid. Kotaro looking at the counter from every angle possible to make sure for himself all was okay. I am glad things got back to normal happy Hana and Kotaro in a short time. Such sweet otterbeings💛🦦🦦💛💛

When they peeked out from under the furniture, I said, "Oh, poor babies!" out loud. You can see how upset they were. 😥 Still, they're so smart to know how to protect themselves. ❤️

Actually the under the futon/bed was a very dangerous place to take cover from an earthquake, don't hide under things that can compress, always look for either a frame in a structural wall, a safe zone or at least a structure that's taller than you and can take the hit of a collapsing ceiling. The stairs were a somewhat better place to take cover if you are the size of Hana.

They must have been so scared. I’ve never seen Kotaro grunt like that before. Good thing they had you to help them stay calm.
There have never two more loved otters than Kotaro and Hana. They are so expressive and intelligent and you can see how well cared for they are. Very impressive.

Animals can sense what we do but also tend to be hyper sensitive to seismic activity and other natural disturbances/disasters.

Such intelligent creatures... I loved how Kotaro, @ 2:06, not being able to see on top of the counter, runs to and up the stairs, hits the right height (without looking) to look over onto the top of the counter. Impressive problem solving

It was so touching to see Kotaro and Hana hiding under the sofa with frightened expressions on their faces. I feel sorry for everyone who is exposed to such things. Kotaro's thought bubble saying: "No time for that!" when you gave him the piece of food he dropped, was so sweet. The expression on his face looked like that is exactly what he was thinking. It's so nice that you understand their different personalities. No Godzilla movies for Hana!

Этот звук не новый. Он его издавал, когда Хану впервые увидел. И на две ноги он тоже тогда становился.

初めてコメントします。☺️ 最近、あちらこちらで地震が多く、不安になりますが、不安を吹き飛ばす可愛さ💕に癒やされました💕💕 ご飯を手で摘んで食べるのですね。カワウソさん達を見る機会がないので、ちょっとびっくりしました（笑）
素直に可愛いし、動物として命を守る行動してるのも興味深くて、これが大自然の中でも同じように警戒してるんだろうなと思うとすごいなあと勝手に感心してしまった
I have Minks and it's incredible how similar they are. They're related animals but still a big difference. Just as cute!

It's very interesting how Kotaro went half way up the staircase to get a better vantage point looking for the monster who knocked something to the floor behind him. Pretty sophisticated stuff for a cute, fuzzy pet. 😉

I know! I don’t why I’m always so surprised when animals demonstrate how smart they are. I was absolutely tickled by that part and kept thinking how smart and clever he was to try and fine a better spot to see up on the counter.

@@anewname2947 in nature they will dive to catch rocks and they will swim on their backs with the rocks on their belly so they can smash oysters and other shells on the rock its really cool to watch.

Absolutely Love these videos. You do such a great job with music, 'comments' that Hana and Kotaro make and the filming... there are other otter videos available but they don't compare to yours. I always look forward to your two rascals!!
