to be fair, the deer would likely try to leave if it really feared the otter, deer are just naturally skittish animals, and the mother was just concerned with protecting its babies instead of playing, which is why she kept putting herself between the otter and the fawns.

The otter isnt doing a submissive pose. He's inviting to play. Otters are very hands on with play and exploration. Literaly. They front paws are very hand like. But unlike us, the have them stuck under their body. Thus to reach for someone, especially someone bigger, they have to roll over. Which is what this otter does. Him flopping to the side like that is basically like you offering your open hand to a horse to sniff and nip at before rubbing its nose with the same hand.

@@grizzlygrizzle I wonder if any animal behaviorists have weighed in on this video. To me it's super obvious that the otter has had some prior playful interaction with either domesticated dogs, wild canid puppies, or some other non-otter species; otherwise he would have given up after the first dozen play solicitations were rejected by the doe. I'm also guessing that otter play styles are similar to dogs' -- he keeps soliciting play with the "here's my tummy" move, and if she takes even a single step toward him, he pops up and yells "Now we chase!" and runs away. I think if he put in enough time, he'd eventually train her to chase him, but she seems like a slow learner. We can't all be as smart as otters!

The otter doesn’t necessarily want belly rubs. By rolling on its back and displaying its vulnerable belly it’s saying “I’m friendly”. The doe seems to understand that, but isn’t interested in playing.

True! This is probably not the first otter she's ever seen, since their territories obviously overlap, but it looks like this is the first time she's seen an otter act like this! Otherwise, she would have made up her mind more quickly whether to run away with her fawns, chase the otter out of the yard, or just turn her back on it and ignore it. She keeps sniffing it (from a few feet away); I wonder if she's trying to smell whether there's some sort of disease or intoxication at play (no pun intended!) It's interesting that the otter is soliciting play mainly from her and not her fawns; maybe she was his playmate before those weird polka-dotted mini-deers came out of her belly! (Although that wouldn't explain the sniffing.)

What a beautiful video. The name is a bit misleading though. The otter wanted to play. The mother deer wanted nothing more than to protect her babies from what she mistakingly perceived as a threat! Notice how she was sure to keep herself between the otter and her babies at all times. Had the otter gotten a little more frisky, I believed the playful thing would have gotten hooved by mom.

So in his frenzied, goofy antics, he continually flips over and show his belly every time he’s near her. Even though the otter is no threat (and keeps reminding her so) the mama deer is having none of it. “You see children, that is why we stick to our own kind.
