Otosclerosis is a disease of the bony labyrinth that causes hearing impairment. Reconstruction of the bony labyrinth in otosclerosis causes limited mobility of the stapes, which leads to progressive conductive hearing loss. The causes of otosclerosis are not entirely clear. The influence of genetic and environmental factors, as well as viral infections, is postulated. The disease affects women more often and may run in families.
