I'm suddenly reminded of Winx Club and THEIR inability to let the characters grow up. They actually did in season 4 but once season 5 rolled around, they regressed to schoolgirls again despite them graduating earlier on... Even Stella put it best. "Just as I thought we were DONE..."

I still stand by the opinion that Nozomi being a new precures team teacher and having to guide a new generation would have lead to a much better application of the themea they were trying to get across.

I'm a bit mixed on that idea. If it's a long series then I could see it working. If it was a short series, I don't think it would have worked that well.

Smile Precure is more adult than this show. Remember the episode about Yayoi's father? The sad moments of her doubting about her talent and thinking of him? At the end, she had her new attack: Peace thunder hurricane; it was a great episode full of emotions. The finale when Candy was stuck in Joker's sphere and the girls were separated; fighting each villains alone was fantastic. Really exciting and cool 😀 Nothing in Otona precure was fun or well developped. The villain is boring, the monsters are in ugly 3D, the time flowers come out of nowhere, the transformations are dissapointing; reuning footage of the animes instead of making ones about Nozomi being an adult Cure. It was so dissapointing! I didn't finished the show. I stoped after episode 3, it never hapened with any other Precure series before. I saw them all. Not this one!

Ah Smile, my favorite season! I find it ironic that some Precure fans gave Smile flack for being light on plot but when it gets serious and emotional, it dials it to eleven. It still remember what Miyuki said to Joker while fighting in the Ball of Neglect compared to most of the things in Otana. Mind you, it’s not a bad show. It’s perfectly watchable but it’s definitely not one of Pretty Cure’s best.

This is probably the most control Toei had over a season, given that they probably deaged the Cures mostly so they could reuse stock animation and most of the focus came on nostalgia pandering than actual story quality.

I remember being really disappointed not seeing adult versions of the cures seeing as they were going to bring them back as superheroines, it just seemed natural since we've seen plenty of older cures in the past like Cure Flower. It felt so lazy, as if just as an excuse to reuse old animation, not have to make new designs, and to cash in on nostalgia. If they didn't want to go the 'grow up and leave your superhero days behind route(which they failed to do)', they could have done a take being a precure from an adult perspective, struggling to balance their adult responsibilities and learning close-minded idealism won't fix all of their problems. Which seems to be what episode one is leading up to, but they drop the plot point and this lesson Nozomi had a chance to learn went nowhere, only to learn she didn't have to learn anything after all and remaining a child was the answer to her conflict. How ironic for a show called 'otona precure.'

I personally know a few precure fans who wanted more Nozomi x Coco but NOBODY was left satisfied by the end and I'd rather pretend this season never happened, they just released their pink wedding gown card for the anniversary or something, and let our imaginations fill in the blanks.

It's not few. Outside of the very vocal parts of the western male precure fandom, which is the majority here and in places like /a/, most Yes5 fans did want more of Nozomi and Coco. The pairing (and Coco as a character) has always been popular in Japan and seems to be popular enough in fan groups that don't overly problematize the whole "BUT HE WAS DISGUISED AS A TEACHER" thing. I didn't have a problem with the writing of relationship in particular but but with how safe and commonplace it was - it is a very common way some romance manga and especially tv dramas handle this kind of "after a time skip" romantic resolution. So I don't think it was poorly written or revolting, just that it was the most boring thing they could have done with it. Which is how I feel about Otona in general. I don't share the hate many have for it, just think it's overly safe. I also don't buy the NHK conspiracy stuff, Precure's Producers have always been cowards.

Like I said before, if this was the start of creating more Adult PreCure seasons like this, it's not off to a very good start. Adult version of classical series are supposed to have the main characters growing up, following their futures, and learn from the past to move forward. This made it look like the girls didn't want to grow up at all. Mai and Urara were the only two characters who had significant development; everyone else was bogged down. Don't get me wrong, it had a strong start. But, when Nozomi started getting her powers back, she and the rest of the girls should started asking questions on how serious the side effects are when reverting to kid form. The Time Flowers were a nice concept and they should had went in deeper into the origins. From there, the Time Flowers could've have a crucial role, forcing the PreCure to overstress their powers and their life force as a result. But starting at the second half, the writers started running out of ideas and everything jumbled together. Bel is the one PreCure villain I actually DO NOT care for. Her reasons for getting rid of people was just out of place, considering that the overarching message is something we' deal with everyday. Pollution, trash, poisoning the water supply; this is standard stuff. If they showed what people were doing to the environment to the extreme and beyond, maybe Bel's reasons wouldn't come off as "Been there, seen that". Lastly, Nozomi and Coco's relationship was rushed. In the two seasons, their development was paced and was not the central focus. When they grew up, the writers made is so that Coco didn't want to see Nozomi at all and was avoiding for obvious reasons. And when Nozomi was on the brink of death, Coco just proposed to her out of guilt. This series had much potential, but if the writers are NOT going to pull the trigger, it comes off as redundant. I know they want to keep their core audience, but just imagine how much more people could have been brought in if the writers weren't bogged down by red tape.

As I've said before. This series could have been better if they skipped the pretty cure stuff, the environmental stuff and had it been the og pretty cure team. Skipping the pretty cure stuff would make it more about a slice of life series following how Nagisa and Honoka aswell as Hikari are doing being adult and having more responsibility. They could have been showing how being an adult is full of problems that's not easy to solve. And making them unable to transform into pretty cure again would show this. They need to let go of the past and find new ways to fix things. And if they needed pretty cure in it. Then why not make it so at the end they see a new generation of pretty cure having mepple and mipple. Coming full circle. And why I think the og is the best choice? Because that would make it more special and not have the coco x nozomi ship. Otona precure is a disappointment series. And could have been better with small changes and ideas. But ofcourse not. Let's pray the the maho tsukai pretty cure sequel is good.

Yeah, this is probably why I wasn’t all that excited for this show while it was airing. I just feel like Toei wanted to capitalize on Yes 5’s popularity and made this series. Of course, I’m not saying there’s ill intent because let’s face it, Pretty Cure is a cash cow franchise, but it’s clearly made to draw in the older audiences without giving them much of a reason to stay beyond seeing them again. The show itself is average. It’s not a trainwreck or anything but clearly not as strong as its predecessors. Some Cures got a short end of a stick (Poor Komachi was done dirty) and despite the heavy focus on Nozomi (undoubtedly due to her popularity in that poll), I can’t really say it highlights her character as well as the first season did. The action is half n half. Fights such as the first episode was amazing but other time is Toei being Toei again with their cheap animation tactics. Nothing bad but nothing special either but it’s Yes 5 and so its fans will get a kick out of it the most, regardless. Especially in Japan. I really hope Maho’s sequel would improve on their shortcomings. Thank you for reviewing and replying that KND ZERO movie clip, Adam. It really hit me.

What I like about this is that they gave it a chance to experiment, but it didn’t go so well. I just found out that drinking has been unbanned. If you all noticed in the morning shows, adults were not allowed to drink. After the 12 episodes were over, I think it would be better if they made it a late-night anime similar to Kamen Rider A (Fuuto PI) Sequel anime. They can easily get pass the restrictions and further better developed the plot if Narita wanted to. Again, I don’t know if Narita had more planned to this series but was denied in the process. The environmental message was probably included for children. I heard Mahoutsukai Precure sequel (things can change) is airing at 2:00 AM which is considered as a late-night. But I am concerned about the story, but who knows, maybe it will be less restricted. Also, many people including me wanted to see the adult Cure forms and not the reverting back to the 13 year old Precure forms. This was a little disappointing. I don’t have high hopes for Mahou to get an adult form simply because they can revert back to their younger self. Ironically, their Precure forms “somewhat” looks like a grown up version already

We can safely say that the Precure franchise will be stuck in Neverland, forever. Whether it is the main series, the movies, or the side projects that "tried" to cover a different audience. It is such a disappointment and shame that this shouldn't be the case as we have seen them done better in previous eras, but somehow they are beginning to hold back more and more. I am not sure about Toei's other franchise like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, but at the very least, while the stories are tamer in comparison to the Showa and early Heisei era, they still at least tried to create something new that could potentially grew out of their comfort zone. Not Precure though, it is evident that this franchise will stuck to their good old formulas, and keep going backwards until they are just a shell of their former self. Fittingly so, as they still need the OG Team + Max Heart to cover for them. I feel like they are becoming more and more like Ultraman, except without the name, glory, and story continuity to help them move forward. I don't really expect them to change anytime soon, as well, the franchise is still making them money, so why bother. This is why it is more fun to see how low can they go. Thanks for the review, and I don't think Hirogaru Sky will end great, so again, take your time to do the overview for that series as well. It is nice to see you covering other shows in return. P.S. YES!!!! I really like Blue Archive and really looking forward to the anime. Fun fact, in the Japan and Global server of the game, the main story are not voiced. But for some reason, the China server has the main story fully voiced in Chinese dub. Not going to lie, I am really jealous that I can't hear the story voiced. And the Chinese voice acting is also pretty well done too. P.P.S. A lot of kids show are more adult than the actual adult show. Pretty ironic. I guess this is why I still like watching Nostalgia Critic from time to time.

I think the original idea for Belle is that she is a reflection of the people in the city. As more and more people grows apathetic, so does Belle, which lead to her attacking apathetic people. After Precure interupts her action, she begin to attack ambitious (the one who want to build villa) and hateful (people who leave hate comments on internet) people. These decisions give her more power to fight Precure (the ambitious people allow her to create dog shadow and hateful people allow her to create twitter... I mean bird shadow) but in exchange it corrupts her and make her destroy the city, which is why she is confused at the final battle because she doesn't realizes she has been corrupted. But, someone (Probably NHK educational) decide this is too complicated for children who might watch in prime time channel, so the writing team decide to change it into full eco-terrorist, which doesn't make sense if you look at episode one, because make human "sleep" isn't what eco-terrorist would do. Instead, if Belle is written as eco-terrorist from the start, she would've targeted factories, coal mine, and other facilities/utilities that are symbol of global warming. So I agree that there is a re-write happen in the middle of production. I also think that the FwPC trio aren't originally part of the story. First, before episode 8, there is no hint or mention of FwPC. This is unlike SSP where we got supporting character included since episode 1. Second, we aren't shown the adult form of FwPC, neither in the opening nor in promotional material. Third, Toei doesn't advertise it. If it is something planned for a long time, Toei would plaster it all over the place, just like SSP who got promotion months before the anime aired and they only begin to appear at the end of episode 3 (and still missing in the OP, the mid-episode transition, and ED). So I think what happen is that after Narita ask for SSP to be included, the producer want to also include FwPC (for MAXIMUM NOSTALGIA), but the executive don't want FwPC to grow up. So a compromise is made where FwPC can only appear in the end of the show and can only be seen as kid. This decision probably come late in production, when the story is already finished, and so the ending is changed minimally so FwPC can be inserted. And if the higher up don't accept FwPC can be included, they can cut it off with minimal adjustment. In any case, I think the inclusion of non-Yes5 ultimately is a mistake because some Yes5 characters (like Rin and Komachi) could've longer focus or at least more satisfying conclusion if their stories don't have to give room for SSP and FwPC content. As much as SSP episodes are good on its own, their inclusion means at least two episodes have to be relegated for their character development instead of Yes5, and it means instead of 6-7 episodes to develop the plot (because 5-6 are used for character episode), we only has 3-4 episodes for the plot to breath. If this Otona precure has 15 episodes (and no FwPC), we might have better exploration on the world, on Nozomi, and on Belle to make it a more nuance story. Instead, because we don't have enough room to explain why the final shadow become something Belle can't control (or even where Shadow comes from, because Belle didn't start with shadow power, at least the flashback doesn't explain it) and we have to make the final fight into mini All-Star, we are left with unsatisfying product for a lot of people. Finally, I just want to say that I don't think the transformation is meant to save money. Transformation scene is one out of three points of watching magical girl show (the other being the characters' characterization and combat animation). Anyone who make magical girl will spent money to transformation scene because that is the selling point (just look at MahoAko, where the transformation scene has more budget than the action, and we only get to see them once per character so far). Instead, I think the higher ups don't want the Precure to change into adult, so the production team (either to spite the executive or they truly think they can sell the nostalgia) decide to de-age the Cure and re-used old transformation without spending money on new transformation scene (even though I very much believe that the higher ups want new animations). Because from interview, it feels like there is a back and forth discussion on this. I am kinda afraid that Maho S2 will suffer this same fate, but I am still hoping we will get new transformation and new form. Now, those are my objective/non-yuri fan observation. As for my yuri-fan side, this spin-off has been very disappointing, because Saki x Mai is sunk (though Murayama do tried to make it viable) and because the other ships aren't developed in order to focus on Nozomi x Coco. But well, I never have any expectation for Otona Precure as yuri fan, so it is more like a disappointment that I expected. Overall, while I am more positive on the show than most, I can't say I am satisfied with the end product. It truly feels like the story lost itself somewhere in the middle. Anyway, that's it from me. Hopefully Maho S2 can be (a lot) better. See you next time.

Hey, at least Rie Tanaka still has the Gundam SEED movie. Honestly I was wondering how necessary on overview for Otona is seeing how it's just 12 eps, but here you managed to convey your dissatisfaction with that series and current Precure trends in general in a more in-depth fashion. I didn't necessarily hate Otona but I will admit I was pretty tuned out after they reintroduced Nagisa and Honoka and after how they handled Komachi. Also that I don't think it holds up to the either of the 2 originals seasons or movies. I think Narita's recent output in HS and Otona offers an interesting contrast with what Junko Komura did with Healin' Good The environmentalist themes were handled with a lot more respect for the audience's intelligence there, and also how Komura did not fall for the trap of romanticizing toxic relationships. They are both female writers as well. I am still slightly curious about how Wonderful will turn out though.

When making a sequel to Star Trek The Motion Picture, they brought in director Nicholas Meyer and writer Harve Bennett. Both brought experience in cinematic science fiction and what they made was the Wrath of Khan: still the gold standard for cinema Trek. They would remain as a creative force behind the Kirk-era movies. Why do I bring this up here? Because Otana Precure would've benefit if it had been put in the hands of people who have experience making quarterly shows for adults rather than leaving it in the hands of the regulars for a year-long series meant for children. A lot of the problems mentioned here could have been ironed out if it was put in the hands of people who knew what they were doing. Solutions would have been simple much of the time. They should have not brought in the Splash Star team and definitely not the OG. They could give Saki and Mai's plots to Rin and Komachi since they had little to do themselves. You already have one of the largest Precure teams and only 12 episodes to tell this story, no reason to bring in even more characters. As for Bell. They should have made her the embodiment of apathy, feeding off spreading it as many Precure villains feed off spreading despair. Apathy is even a form of advanced despair where we simply give up. Like with adding more characters, the series was too short to try to do anything complicated with her. Just make her a straight up villain. And, really, maybe they should have looked back at Star Trek II for inspiration. It is roughly as removed from Space Seed as Otana is removed from Yes 5 Gogo. It deals with the theme of growing older and whether it is our place to do things we did when we were younger. You said they would be Otana Precure, let them be otana Precure and explore that. As is, this was just Precure only they're allowed to drink. Hopefully Mohtsukai 2 will do better.

If shows like the Fairy Oddparents and Codename Kids Next Door (which btw I absolutely do adore to this day) can handle the growing up message better than Otona Precure (which was supposed to be THE adult magical girl show) ever did, then yeah, something is quite wrong in the rotten state that is Toei. 'It's a shame because the potential was there, but so much of it was squandered because of X and Y' is something that was been a running theme for Precure for some time now, and Otona is no exception to the rule. Botching some of the character arcs, especially Komachi's was bad enough, but bringing back the OG Max Heart for a rerun of DX All Stars is just rubbing salt into the wound; WHAT business, I might say, do they have doing in a show which is primarily about the Yes 5 (and Splash Star) team to begin with, other than nostalgia fodder? None, and that alone makes it even more frustrating than it should already be.

I didn't finished your video yet, but you saying that Narita has a pattern on writting her stories made me realized I have a theory that maybe she took most of her inspirations from Tokyo Mew Mew while doing Yes and Otona. Otona making their cast being environmentalists in the ending make things a lot suspicious in some way, like Mew Mew is all about environmentalist magical girls, consequences of transforming into magical girls is something present on Mew Mew as well. Although both series already used to have similatiries in the past like: transformation phrases with "metamorphosis" two ikemen with similar color scheme, both Mew Lettuce and Cure Mint being oddly similar

It is a bit depressing and funny enough it's a bit ironic that power rangers at least the first 17 years of its run with some exceptions from the Disney era would handle this a bit better but also sadly would fall into the same trappings Toei is finding itself in. Speaking whom, learning a bit about the history of zyuranger well contrary to most popular belief at least from western tokusatsu fans, zyuranger was not the stand out break out show it was made out to be compared to MMPR. In fact the issues were almost identical to what's happening here in pretty cure. Alienating the audience that grew up with this franchise with stories that were more childish than it's previous season, main leads who have no character to them and only got saved by its 6th rangers for a bit till they killed him which even before that our main 5 heroes got to show how really incompetent they were as Burai was always the one bailing them out and MMPR despite its flaws at least worked in some albeit silly reasons why Tommy would show up late but they do make a bit more sense and it's not as though the narrative presented Jason and his friends as incompetent either but were still learning. Much like Disney, Toei seems to find itself in these ruts every so often and it's hard to say if they'll catch on to the reality they can't keep doing things this way to where it feels like they're talking down to their audience if not outright insulting them at times. As for writers like Narita while I can understand cooperate mandates and all which truth be told this wouldn't be different even if they were to be independent but I think truly great writers and other content creators show their best talents when they know what limitations are they under and what can they do to work around it or with it in some cases to deliver something of a compromise that at times has given us some really memorable stories. But even still I do feel like while not as bad as Hollywood yet but the lack of accountability and taking responsibility for failing or making mistakes is also causing these dips in quality. Yeah it sucks and it can even be outright painful to hear criticisms on your work where even if you have it your best shot, it can be really painful especially with the way the Internet can be. But unless these writers and any who take part in these shows learn to embrace the criticisms and learn from their failures rather than running or ignoring them, we can see legit improvement. But yeah sorry for this long one, it's just this show and even current season of precure and even some seasons of Sentai and Kamen rider do feel they drop the ball cause they worry if pushing things too far or have to meet corporate mandates and they end up outshined by ironically enough parodies of themselves. Well here's wishing ya luck on this year in what you decide to review and probably talk about the tokusatsu line up though you should watch love after world domination if you can and maybe talk about the relationship power rangers would have on super sentai in terms of influence as it is sorta interesting the types of things super sentai would take from power rangers and slowly over time integrate into their formula.

I just hope they learn from this when it comes to Mahou Tsukai. That show could do a great job handling a single cour since the team size is much smaller. But I'm not going to act like I'm optimistic that they'll be willing to keep them in adult forms when they transform.

Do you why kibou wo chikara turned out like this, this is why: As for APC, once I know the series is aired in the evening at NHK Educational TV, I am prepared the content will be more educational, but comparing to morning anime, this anime releases some contents which cannot be aired in the morning - Bar and Wine scene, and stories about working people. It is very normal content for all of us, or you may question why these plots are adult only. Toei didn't cheat us, this series is not for children, but it is not what we think about adult content (such as visually adult fan service). Especially, the channel this series is aired in National TV channel, so some contents are still restricted to be aired. However, MGPC sequel may be more lenient in the content because it will be aired in AniMAZing! period. What kind of anime had aired in that slot? Most of them are those dimensional world series, such as "Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement" or " I shall survive using Potion". Unlike APC, it is aired in over midnight, at 2 am Japan Time. You may expect a little bit more? This is a real introview. Btw

Impression: First, I thought the Time Flower was interesting but too bad it's just a plot device. Second, the returned of the OG was just like "hello, long time no see" and that's it we didn't know what they have been doing this past years. Third, I feel that the villain Bell was just a fallen guardian angel into moron angel due to her stupidity ideal grudged against human's pollution tendency. Fourth, I truly didn't care the NozoCo (Nozomi x Coco shipping) I'm more on their character than those boring fanservice love team. Lastly, It truly didn't do much what means to be adult like us (shoot out to the Childhood days born in the 90's or should I say Millennial!) How to Fix: Believe me, this *special sequel series* is very easy to write if you give this characters what it feels like to be Adulthood days. Some elements that I saw on this series needs to remove or change because some the stuff here truly didn't interest to me and yes no nostalgia transformation sequence. 5 Ways to Fix 1. As a Epilogue series - dang I remember watching Looking for Magical Doremi, that movie was scratched my head I thought it was your typical sequel movie but it's just a clip show nostalgia with different people and that's it. So it could have been done better is the after events on their respective story, and never reference the GoGo Dream Live plot. 2. Remove Time Flower - sad to say I thought this revert back to a kid flower plot was interesting but it just very forgotten. So yeah much better the Time Flower is no longer exist from the start. 3. No villain - I like to fix Bell but no need for a villain like her as well the Shadow. Her motivation on getting rid mischievous humans was kind a lame. 4. Focus story character for the cures - since this series is a 12 episodes only, there are lots character focus room for the cures. I want to see their point of view. 5. Remove romance shipping - like I said I'm more on their character than this stupid love team fanservice. If you making a chemistry between this two person but you force them to be together with no build up, that's a terrible writing. Overall: I'm not mad nor dissappointed, it's just that it didn't plan what this show should be. I would say this special sequel series is alright 🤏. Impression on the main writer: Gosh, did Yoshimi Narita learned her mistake from the past? Her writing quality when it comes to romance is SUCK no wonder why Happiness Charge romance was a complete garbage while her comedy is just force us to laugh. I have no hype for Wonderful. PS: Much better if they hired Toshiki Inoue for this so-called adult series. He is your guy when it comes to soap opera. Believe me, many precure fans who are non-toku viewer well be totally off-guard his writing quality.

One of the things I've come to realize about life is that being a kid is about learning what freedoms adults keep from you, whereas being an adult is about learning what freedoms you simply don't have. If you want to talk about a Henshin hero anime where adult cynicism creeps in, talk about Astro Fighter Sun Red.

This... is so disheartening to me. I haven't watched the show because of some negative reviews, and now I'm glad I didn't. The de-aging seems to undermine the whole point of making a series about adult cures. Like you said, I don't think you even need much action in a series like this. And then I hear they made Coco a stalker?! I was never a Nozococo hater but I thought this show could improve their relationship not make it worse!

Hard to say. While more episodes could help develop the story and look at the character's lives a bit more, if they're not doing anything important with them it might make the show feel too long.

The worst part of this show for me is how it managed to make nozomi even more of a manic pixie dream girl as an adult than she was as a child Her movie appearances showed She could act actually mature So why wasn't that in this show? Honestly, ruining one of my favorite pinks was part of my hatred for & dissaproval of otona precure. The other characters didn't fair much better They didn't do anything meaningful with the fairies other than shipping bait Komachi and to an extent rin had the most depressing arc's While urara & karen had the most themstically appropriate arc's Bunbee should've appeared more to work off how the og seasons ultimately spared him Ultimately, it all felt like wasted potential a missed opportunity To the point that hirogaru sky did its ideas better in one instance

Idk why… This whole adult sequel nostalgic and disappointment made me realized that they should remake Delicious Party as a late night series. 🗿 Delicious had potential but wasted. If they hired an experienced script writer to redo the story with more in depth with 40-50 eps, I will be extremely surprised. Of course, they need to hired the original writer to overlook the script but bringing in experienced writer would make this work even better. They can get away from the safe meddling. I think even the experienced manga writer can do a better job of improving Delicious Party. Takumi deserved better, they should reworked on Yui’s characteristics and include more developments, Gentlu/ Amane’s story and backgrounds, better villains, more CONFLICTS, etc
