Otis & Maeve Love Story
Series: Sex Education (Netflix) season 1-2-3-4
When we first met, I didn't trust anyone. I thought if I kept everybody out, I'd stop myself from being hurt or let down, which is what I was used to. Then we set the clinic up together, and I realized that most of the people who came to us for help really just needed connection. And maybe I wasn't so different. You have the rare ability to make people feel truly seen. And you did the same for me. It was this and your relentless optimism about human beings that gave me the courage to start opening myself up to other people. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel alone, which allowed me to imagine something bigger for myself. I want you to know that however much it fucking hurts that we can't be together, I won't ever close myself off again. Meeting you cracked my heart open, and now it's forever changed. And because of that, I will carry a part of you with me wherever I go. I think what I'm trying to say is thanks for everything, Dickhead.

The transition from season 1 to end of season 4 is just so perfect. All the emotions coming up in that last message from maeve to otis. In my mind she comes back in the future and finds a writers job in the uk. The ending wasnt happy but it was still beautiful and realistic. Cant believe its over

In my opinion, their ending may be realistic, but they deserved a better epilogue. For example, Maeve returns to America, Otis finishes college and enrolls in university. After finishing university, one day he notices in a bookshop the first book written by Maeve which is enjoying success and he attends a meeting where she presents his book. Once the meeting is over, Maeve would sign the copies of those who buy her book and as the last person there is Otis. They both look at each other, smile at each other and that's it. I would have ended the series like this, alluding to their possible comeback together after some years...

In my headcannon, the series ended at 12.45 and she never went to America. Series 4 was an absolute travesty of bad writing and character inconsistencies. To everyone saying that the ending was realistic, there's no way Maeve would abandon her 3 year old sister to permanently move to the States, when at the end of series 3 they've only just started to become a proper family with her moving in with Anna to be closer to her sister. She especially wouldn't abandon her sister after her mum dies, leaving her with no blood relations in the UK beyond a druggie brother who's gone off the rails. Not to mention leaving Otis and Aimee for a temporary writing course in America taught by a narcissist with a fragile ego who is so threatened by his most talented students that he tries to sabotage all their prospects if they critique his work 🙄 the Maeve of the first series would have totally called out that shit for what it was and found a way to pursue her writing ambitions from the UK so she could be with Otis and her family. If, as she says in her letter, Otis has truly opened her up to love she wouldn't be so quick to give up on it and it would have been a much more fitting end to her character arc to have her give the US professor the middle finger and choose to stay with Otis rather than running away from love. She wasn't even shown as being very happy in America, the writers just threw that in to manufacture a way to keep her and Otis apart. This is before I even get started on how much they fucked up Otis's character in the final series, which is a whole essay in itself 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️ the writers really fucked them both over. Such a disappointing finale to an otherwise excellent series. I regret watching the last season completely. If I'd known how bad it was going to be I wouldn't have bothered watching it.

First of all, sorry for the long comment, I hope you can read it all without getting bored. I agree with everything you said except the fact that I am glad I watched the last season. Although I think the ending is fucked up. I feel the same way you do. Meave's story was always about those that left her behind and that's all she lacked and she even said it in season 1 "I am really smart. Just got unlocky in the family departement". She lacked the stability of a family and people she could trust and lacked the ability to accept help from others, wich she learned after fighting with Aimee in season 3 wich is an ark that I think contributed very well to Meave's character. It is very hard to belive that after finding a partner that loves her with all his heart (Otis), a family (Anna, Elsie, Aimee, Isaac and Sean) and people that suport her like mother figures (Miss Sands and Jean) she would leave everything behind to chase something that she could achieve in the UK. Specially now that she has stability and support and even Jean wich wrote some books and could give her some advice on it and how to publish. I get she wanted to leave Moordale but the UK is very large and she and Otis could start a life not far from their families. That way Otis wouldn't have to leave his family (Jean, Eric, Joy) behind eitheir. I also agree with you when you say that they had character inconsistencies: Eric this season was sudenly jealous of Meave again and it came out of nowhere. It's not like Otis ignored him for her, except when he learned that Meave'smom died. Jean (besides accepting herself as a good mother) had one the weaker arks in my opinion. Jakob deserved to be in this season (they just had to find a reason why Ola wouldn't appear since the actress chose to leave) and Jean's story ark this season would have benefited from it. His scenes in season 3 where all great and made me tear up (like when he confessed his trust problems, gave advice to Otis about people deserving your whole heart, telling Otis that even if he's not his father he won't go anywhere, reassuring Ola that he loves her and reminds him only o joy and hapiness). Jean and Maureen not having a single scene together when they are best friends (I did enjoy Maureen's story tho when she realised she still had feeling for Michael and etc). And there are a lot more that I don't remember at the moment. I didn't hate the season but when I look back at it, it could have been a lot better. I would even be happy with it if Otis and Meave got the ending they deserved instead of ending both depressed and looking like they will never love like that again in their lives. They should have ended up together and Meave should have stayed where she belongs with the people she loves and that love her back.

Their relationship was built to thrive in the face of adversity. Otis' relentless optimism to see the good in everyone, accentuated Maeve's attraction towards him. I've felt that with each passing season, Otis' character seems to degenerate, but only subtlety. It's not until Maeve's departure he begins to question his place in her life. We can infer this from the downcast facial expressions he makes after each subsequent phone call. He knew deep down that it was always going to be a risk to express his love to Maeve, if she decided not to return. Maeve gave him the courage to discover his passion; she provided him with the tools for his gift. It's true what she wrote at the end; not everyone feels seen in this life. Adapting and responding to all walks of life is a rare ability, something which Otis is capable of. After that first encounter, she unknowingly initiated the start of a true relationship, which endured through the toughest of times. Heartbreak, betrayal, loss, pain, depression and even death encapsulated their journey. Their positive moments began to take fruition towards the end, when everything had been worn down. It had to get worse, before it could get better. They reunited because of a death. A death that shattered Maeve's fragile perception of herself, after having been told she isn't good enough to write. I saw in her piercing brown eyes the shattered skeleton that cast her every movement towards a road, broken down by the recklessness of the driver, who had left her behind, in between the cracks that can't be fixed. It was a matter or time before the road had to end, and Otis knew this. Consequently, when they lie in the depths of the forsaken pit, which once contained water, they retain each feeling, as they both know it won't last forever. They travelled far together, but the timing was never on their side. It struck Otis with guilt. Maeve could see the anguish when they fell deeper into each others eyes that night. To lose a person you love in one night can only be felt through the pain you experienced to travel that far, and to accept the scar that burns and constricts the recurring ache you can't touch. The morning glow will only solidify the failed touch when Maeve left to pursue a far more rewarding fate, but Otis is now marked by heartbreak. His future is unclear. We leave him in anguish, but the pain he now feels will help him to accept that he saved someone. He saved and led her from the pitfalls of isolation, to carry a token which cracked her heart open towards her everlasting dream. Her future is bright. His is secured by a change that affected one person and reinvented her reality. Otis was the change in Maeve's life, and through each milestone, they reinvented each other into wiser, stronger people. "It's always been you." Otis to Maeve. Thanks for reading! - Will

I really like that you fit in Remy's advice to Otis. The writters should have rewatched it before writting the finale. "When you meet the people that love you dispite your faults, you should hold on to them really, really tightly". Since the root of Meave's problems were always because her family or the people she loved abandoned her and the fact that she finally found people that love her how she is, that believe in her and her dreams (Aimee, Otis, Hannah, Elsie, Isaac, even Miss Sands and Jean) makes it hard to believe that she would never come back to England. Even if she did not want to live in Moordale like she said, she and Otis could both live together not far from Moordale. That way they could both follow their dreams, be together and happy and be close to the people that make them happy. She could become a writter or even go to uni and so could Otis or become a sex therapist. Even Otis wouldn't have to sacrifice being with his family (Jean, Joy and Eric) or his dreams to pursue a life with Meave. I think the writters messed up with their finale (Otis and Meave's) because two intelligent people that love each other so much surely could figure this out without each making sacrifices. And even if they had to sacrifice something (like is said in one of my favourite movies) "there is the bravery of thinking on others before themselves" and sometimes people "make many sacrifices for their families and put aways many dreams" and even we cannot make these dreams come true, "sometimes we take them out of the drawer and admire them. But it gets harder and harder to close that drawer but in the end we do" for the people we love.

@@adisoneulalie7070 yeah but I think that even from a writting point it would have been smart for them to end up together. Not only does Remy's advice prove that when you find the right persons you just have to hold on to them but Meave's ark throughout the show has been about it. She was always left behind, by her father, by her mother and like she stated in the first season "She is really smart. Just got unlucky in the family department", if she got the help and care that she needed from a family she would have worked out a career much easier. Even if she left America behind that would not be the end of her oportunities. With a loving partener (Otis), the satbility of a family (Aimee, Isaac, Hannah, Elsie), mother figures (Jean, Miss Sands) to support her she would definetly thrive. Even in season 3 she and Aimee had a fight and she had an ark to learn to accept the help of her family and friends wich also suports what I am saying. The writters treated her and Otis like Meave only had one oportunity in life and like she wasn't still grieving and in need of a suportive family.

Yes, I have exactly the same feeling, because of the scene with the Otis father when he mentioned to hold on to people who likes you and accepts you. In my view the ending of season 4 is not in line with this message. They could do it differently. Maybe if Meave would suggest Otis, she will not have time for him in the US or that she wants to dedicate her life to writing. But it haven't happened. Instead in the current ending Otis broke up simply because she will go to US and maybe she will not return back. What he could do in the current scenario is to follow the father message and go to US with Meave.

  • @luissimoes2645

@@marian11235813 true he could chase her and make their lives there. But I think it would be better for them to live in the UK that way they wouldnt have to leave their family and friends behind. I mean they could but it's really hard to believe that someone like Meave who was abandoned by her whole family would leave her friends and Elsie behind specially after losing her biological mother. Also I don't like the idea of Otis leaving Jean alone with Joy and Otis leaving Eric. I think our characters all belong together in the Moordale giant bubble but if Meave doesn't want to live in Moordale they could always live somether not too far.

This is the main problem of Otis's and Maeve's Story. I personally believe these two should have gotten together a long time ago, in season 1 their frienship was absolutely amazing and fun to watch its why viewers love them ,but their popularity affected writers to use them both now as a tool to bring audience back for another seasons you know the infinite "will they, wont they", this resulted into Otis and Maeve's screen time being cut and when they do share scene together there had to be drama , obstacle and stuff just to keep them away so viewers arent satisfied and this was going for so long that motis lost spark momentum.. I think the show would be better if they kept being together just like in season 1 and watch them grow into a couple and Explore themes of relationship I just think otis and Maeve being partners in clinic and growing into something more was so entertaining and it should have continued, but them being apart all the time, endless drama and obstacles killed something beautiful, the potencial was better than what we got Also for the ending i personally believe that in character, otis and Maeve will definitely contact one another again abd they will try to make it work atleast one more time

Maybe the ending scene will mean that in the distant future they'll make a movie, and they're both much older, she's a professional writer, comes back to England, has a slight American twang to her accent, and they end up together. And they play this ending scene as a "back when they were teenagers, and now they're in their late 20s and end up back together properly" sort of thing. Almost reminding us of, oh yeah the series when the characters were in highschool, now they're much older. I can kind of hear it playing at the beginning of the movie.

Im rewatching season 1 to 3 again because Season 4 was definitely my least favorite out of all the seasons. Too many new LGBT characters that overshadowed the main characters from season 1 to 3. Also felt like the main characters didnt fullly reach their full development. The ending seems like it wasnt an ending for me. I wished Maeve should've just stayed with Otis...🤔🤔 writers thought there was still another season coming out.. also there wasnt much of Otis and Maeve screentime🥲🤧 Whatchu guys think?

Definitly feels like they were writing s4 without knowing it was last season Otis went thourgh suffering 4 seasons on, he did make maeve grow & mature, && she became better as a personn, there were obstacles on their road to love, and at the end, i feel like otis is really put aside, he went thourgh all these obstacles and wasnt rewarded as maeve is for maturing & go for her goals. He is just here suffering heartbroken, if atleast we could saw their future, because is make sense to me that they cant be mature enought to get engaged at 17 and be together for the rest of their life. But at least if we could see that they meet again somehow later & get together.. sadly we dont and i'm kinda heartbroken because i do think this is some of the best love story in any show

The directors rly chose to wipe their ass and smear their shi on the finale... it could have been so damn good but they butchered it

Maeve never valued Otis, she was not able to value what Aimee did for her, she was always selfish and did not value those who wanted to help her, she practically changed Otis by making him selfish and that is why he distances himself from everyone who cares about him. , his mother, Eric and Ruby, when Maeve leaves he recovers all these relationships
