Issues are in pure peer to peer .. 1Unless u know their direct IP or something (assuming everyone have port forwarded connection) 2.Connected IP might not be completly secure 3. Means we can't connect to different IP's that we don't know 4.google will be useless ..no search engines fetch different IP (cause it doesn't know IP's that are online or new and etc...) I think peer to peer should be done with a centralized registry (should be secure).. So that. Search engines can fetch new different IP that are currently online.... But it will be still peer to peer ...

it easy to make for long range just need an old sat dish and a old or new router . made one long time ago to make private network between friends. even with the low power output from a router you get a surprisingly long range. i have even used mine to borrow wifi spots from far away and that dish is only 35 cm in dia. www.exe64.com/mirror/wokfi/

@@moodberry To my Knowledge, othernet does not stream video. They do however stream Radio (audio only). That is so-so, If you just use the LNB it comes with it is not the best quality, Its like listening to an AM station (its kind of noisy). There is also no way to upload information to the satelite as this is a downlink serivce. If you want to try streaming a video from somewhere, maybe look at amateur radio TV or ATV lots of rules though so do your research.

It is possible, just not supported. You would need an lnb, a power injector for the lnb, and a sdr reciever capable of receiving the output frequency of the lnb. Then all you would need to do is compile the source code (on github) for whatever system you want to run it on. They are still actively developing the skylark firmware so it makes things faster if they only have a limited amount of hardware to develop for. They have said in the past that they want to make it possible to install on any linux distro so people can assemble their own reciever from locally sourced parts.

I ordered a receiver som years ago. Small black USB box. Shipped from US with USPS. Had to pay import tax. Broke down since there was no short circuit protection for the LNB voltage. Fixed it and ran it for a few months. Then lightning took out both the receiver and my raspberry pi. Fun but expensive experience - will not go down that path again.

Hi James, unfortunately it is not two way traffic, it is a receiver only. The content is curated by the team @ Othernet. So things like KZread etc wouldnt be possible because there is no way to send a request of what video to watch. Plus, the bandwidth is extremely narrow so would take a long time to download a video, depending on quality. If the sail boat was static, as in not moving, then it should be possible to receive the signal, just remember that SES-2 or Astra 3B is in a fixed location so your LNB/Dish would have to remain pointing to the correct location.

If 30 years ago you cold get the C Band tv point south and the Satilite Ecliptic These satilites were like 32000 miles above Earth in Geosynchronous Orbit. I wondered when some one would get around to using g those. Theres like 12 C Band sats still up there. I think some of the Christian stations are still broadcasting. Google Fcc C Band and L Band Sats and see what they report. Nothing illegal to monitor the airways. No matter who's sat. Like Russian, China, Israel, India. All those countries have satilites. Good Luck

It almost makes you wonder if its worth while to put a satellite in orbit and only have a 20 Kb stream. Not even KB, Kb, so 20/8 = 2.5 Kilobytes per second data rate. In Europe it would only be 1.25 Kilobytes per second. Then again, I'm just going to assume they are using the older satellites that are already up there in orbit and re-purposing the old equipment on it. It probably was only ever meant to provide a form of telemetry back down to earth, diagnostic logs, or something originally.

There must be a way to hack the board and route the traffic to be able to use this as a real internet. 10Kbps is not that bad for checking emails in html format and other webpages.

Seems to me that it's free data in the same sense a radio is: You get what you're given. Better than nothing in remote locations, but it not a useful communications medium unless it supports two-way conversations, which it doesn't. Pretty much useless to anyone who can watch this video. Now, a 10-20Kb freely and universally accessible internet, that would be something! Interesting all the same.

My thoughts exactly. It's a fun project to play with, much like a raspberry pi and a nice addition to the shack. I'd imagine it's quite a buzz when you first connect to it. That weather app is lovely too. I might get one just for the experience of building and learning. I can't see how it's in any way useful though...

It's not really useful until you are without internet/cell coverage. Their is a place like that not far from me. The only way to communicate is via ham radio repeaters. This makes a great way to stay up to date on the news and the weather is good enough to give you a heads up if a storm is coming. It would also be useful to the people that have heavily censored internet so they can get worldwide news that didnt go through their government filter first.

My first modem was only 1200 bps, and people like myself spent so much time on them that we had to get them their own phone line. That and the fact that we all wanted to have our own little BBS. After Compuserve came along, we spent all of our time figuring out ways to keep our 56k modems online 24/7. My local dial up here sent me a letter telling me that my service was "unlimited, not indefinite". Cable modems didn't come along here until the early 2000's...

@@MatHelm I remember those days well :-) I used to run a BBS with two dedicated lines and a third live for outside work hours (when I didn't need it for work). The slowest modems I worked on used to be used for serial terminals in remote areas in South Africa. 300bps was common. I think I can type faster than some of those transfer rates. In the 90s I used to download stiffy disk images to update the OS, leaving the downloading running over night and cursing when the line was dropped!

I think you’re missing the point. The whole idea is to support areas which have no cell or internet coverage, yes, places like that still exist. School coursework and study material is also shared via this tool. So for some, in rural and undeveloped countries this provides a key hold to the outside world.
