My take on stamina/streaming based on seeing other top players is that the main 'genetics' gap comes from how well you maintain your skill after taking a break from it, be it short or long. P much everyone can get good at speed/stamina with time and effort like any other skill. However, I've noticed there is a massive gap with some players coming back after a small/long break and basically being put back at square one in terms of ability, while others come back like nothing has changed at all. Merami is a p notable example as someone who can just drop in whenever and fuckin shred and I think that's what ends up separating the best tapping players like him from other good speed players. Coming back from a break and being two steps back every time is gonna significantly hinder ur progress compared to someone who doesn't have that issue.

  • @aizuuya

    @aizuuya

I am one of those that if I take 3 days break or more from either playing osu in general or not playing skillcap speed/stamina, I will be back to square one and have to grind for weeks just to get back to my previous skill level. Also I show no improvement in speed or stamina even if I play every single day for weeks and grind it, my hands will just get fucked up and they will hurt so bad I won't even be able to play. Genetics are real. They have halted my progress in the game and I can never achieve my goals of becoming a top stream player. You don't even know the things I would give up just to have the genetics these top players do. I can't even imagine spending months away from the game and being exactly where I left off when I come back. I'm not certain that, quote "the main 'genetics' gap comes from how well you maintain your skill after taking a break", but actually that is just one factor that ties heavily into your genetics. Skillcap, stamina, and speed are all also determined by genetics. They affect ability to improve much more than maintaining skill from a break.

9:43 - One thing I WILL say about this take is that, comparatively, the entire community is SIGNIFICANTLY better now than they used to be. I know, like, of course it is. But the degree is pretty staggering. I'm ranked around 205k with 3134PP. I found a Reddit thread from early 2019 that says the 5 digit cutoff was 2547PP. Which is almost 300k now. And the 5 digit cutoff today is 4512PP. That's approaching DOUBLE what it was 5 years ago. It's just weird thinking that a hardstuck 6 digit in 2023/24 like me would've been very solidly in the 5 digit range in 2019.

i think of technique as something that is different for everyone. i feel like the best technique changes from person to person, as it will always be what you are most comfortable with which is determined by a lot of factors. so if something looks weird like chiconys tapping for example, it doesnt necessarily mean that it is uncomfortable or bad for his hand. if you feel comfy playing with 'flat' fingers then there is no point in trying to 'curve' them. each individual can improve their own technique, but i doubt that it will converge to the same exact tapping style for everyone.

hi spazza! i made some of those videos that talked about tapping genetics and technique and whatnot chicony and shimon's techniques look weird and abnormal, but the actual amount that their fingers are moving is very little. That's better for tapping faster. Also, even though my video about genetics did really well, I hate that now people blame their "genetics" on their lack of speed. Genetics exist, sure, but I don't think it matters until the top 0.01% of speed players (the people pushing the limits of what is possible). There is so much speed improvement that ANYONE can do by just shredding speed maps.

@@yurushi55 If we’re talking about the top diff it’s still a 306bpm spaced deathstream at od 10.7. Not many people are capable of hitting stuff like that accurately and at this point (potentially when high AR length bonus is removed) jump aim needs a buff anyways instead of more nerfs to speed. Maybe a small nerf to high OD (10.3-10.8) but a buff to OD 11? IMO ATH 3mod is underweighted and so are many dthr plays due to how hard it is to acc OD 11 Can’t say for sure though, I’m just a random and don’t claim to be an expert at balancing pp

As someone who talks pretty fast and tends to edit audio similar to him, I think that (in my opinion) the reason sst3w edits like that is either to get rid of silent audio to keep the viewer engaged and never have the chance to click away. Or he messes up a sentence and only records near where he messed up as to not have to re-record the entire line. Either way I can understand why you wouldn’t like that type of editing however I personally do it so I don’t get offended by it

I dont have any problems with sst3w's editing style... He really often says words wrong while speaking and has to record that part then again... If he doesnt want to record ten hours straight he has to do it like that. I also have that problem and I think its quite a talent to be able to speak as consistently without mistakes for like ten minutes. Honestly I see a lot of people with a similar editing style because of that... I guess speaking natural without a script in mind helps, but most people have to plan the next sentence in their head before recording.

Thermonuclear Hot Take: Mrekk/whitecat (or anyone holding #1 for insane periods of time, cookiezi gets a pass because he was always having to stay on top of the game trading spots with people in the beginning) being #1 was the worst thing to happen to the game from a outsider looking in. I think this because it made looking at top players extremely boring because no one is battling for any position in the leaderboard anymore. It’s stagnant, boring, and makes me not want to even try to climb the ranks/play the game because of no competition (I’m a competitive person).

I always question starting DT at such a low rank because you still can get a lot of ranks just by training foundational skills on nomod or even the other mods like HD or HR. If you are really set on training DT you should really start on an easier map, like the 8.5 AR maps can often be 4* with DT, otherwise play very short maps if you do want to try higher difficulty. I didn't even start training DT until around 6k pp, but realistically you can probably do it as early as 5k pp. Its an issue of foundational skills. You need to be able to read AR9.3 at minimum, but also comfortably aim/stream high bpm 5.5-6* maps before you build the skill required to access the nearly endless pool of very very juicy 6*/7* DT maps. For an easy transition into DT later down the road, stick to playing maps with a high BPM, like 180+ and try to consistently have a UR below 100. This gets you ready for high BPM in terms of stamina and aim, and then all you need to do is get used to AR 9.3.

@@antimatter2417 there is no one optimal/superior technique (except maybe cookiezi's lol), but there are aspects of one's tapping which can be bad and unproductive such as directing tension/energy linearly through your hand and letting it build up in your joints on long streams as opposed to circulating it, also raising your wrist too much, overreliance on wrist rotation, extra unnecessary/pointless movement or using elbow(up/down) movement/shoulder tension as a crutch. there are many correct ways of tapping but most player's tapping techniques are not correct.

Not really a “hot take” when people say osu content is repetitive lmao. Rhythm games as a genre are like that in general. Crazy scores always get the most clicks, rhythm games are just too repetitive and simple to make unique content. On the other hand it’s my favourite genre to watch live, I can barely watch anything else without getting bored on twitch

streaming technique is incredibly vital at a beginner level. as soon as you find a technique that can go above like, 200, you can probably keep it till however long. However, there's some techniques that are just bad and can't evem get you to streaming 190, regardless of practice. There is no "good techniques", but there is certainly "bad ones"

There certainly are bad techniques, like having a long travel distance or buttoning out hard. The reason they are bad is because they waste a lot of energy. If you halve your travel distance you reduce the energy required by 64.6%. Buttoning out hard is also bad for your finger health.

imo pp should be based around a player themselves, if a player had too many one mod play then every one more submitted score with that particular mod will be rated lower and lower until it eventually require you to play other mod in order to gain ranks this should be beneficial for all rounded player and may show who truly is the best to play with every single mod provided in the game, imo this will also help reducing one trick players as they have to be good at every mod and playing various mapping style with the mod combined. resulting in a better tourney entertainment too as everyone is actually good at playing tournament and not only those who spend hours actually playing for skill instead of farming this system will also help you build skill while also farming at the same time, however if you farm something too much then youll be rewarded with less pp even if a map is harder to the point where you cant even gain more pp with that mod

This wouldn’t really diversify skill sets at all though. A standard jump map is still a jump map regardless of what mod you put on it. This idea isn’t going to incentivize playing different types of maps, only different mods. Also the “best “ player will always be sort of subjective.

This is a terrible idea. That just incentivizes a "jack of all trades" playstyle which some people are really just not interested in. If we really had to make the pp system more complicated than it already is, it would be far better to split mods into their own sub categories so we can see who the best player is for nomod, HD, HR, HDHR, etc

i think i have a better idea now, how about weight a map depending on how much diversity are there in a map. like the pp system can recognize what jumps, streams, speed, etc is. make all of them balanced and calculate them based on how much those skillset are spread out, for example(read this if youre confused with my explanations and want to know the conclusion) a map that is filled with 90% jumps or stream (purposely farm maps) will be weighted less than a map that is filled with 50% jumps 50% stream

It for sure applies to tapping as well. Trumpet players are taught early on that you want to have your fingers curled so that they're more vertical than horizontal because it helps with speed. same thing applies to tapping.

The biggest problem osu has in my opinion is the music selection and maps in general. As somebody that has gone from tolerating anime openings/japanese music to despising it over the years, there really isn't too much to do really. At least not if you wanna be competitive. The same shitty songs being mapped 15 times is something i find beyond idiotic. That's quite literally the biggest reason i stopped playing. (and because I couldn't get past group stage in OWC) Take what I say with a grain of salt, as I am the worst kind of osu-boomer by now lol
