Ostrog Monastery | The Most STUNNING Religious Site You've Never Heard Of! 🤯

Ostrog Monastery COMPLETELY blew our minds from the moment we saw it driving in.

We arrived in Podgorica knowing that our first visit anywhere would be the Ostrog Monastery and WOW, that was a great decision. The Ostrog Monastery is a 17th-century Serbian Orthodox Church situated in the side of a mountain 900 METERS above the Zeta Valley! Initially it was hard to wrap our minds around just how high Ostrog Monastery was but once we saw it, we immediately understood its significance. We’re visiting on a weekday in March which means there aren’t many tourists at all. This allowed us the opportunity to drive the 3 kilometers straight to the upper monastery parking lot. (DISCLAIMER: Most times this is not the case unless you have elderly or children with you. Which means you will have to walk up the mountain via a staircase so make sure to wear good shoes.)
We arrived at Ostrog Monastery & started taking in the sights. Admission was free, but we went into the gift shop to buy some candles so that we could light them in honor of each of Hannah’s grandparents as well as our sets of parents. This wasn’t an expensive purchase, but we wanted to give back to the Ostrog Monastery in some way. After lighting the candles, we made our way up into the Upper Monastery.
The interior was absolutely stunning. There were rooms with various Frescos depicting a multitude of Orthodox Christian symbols. We took our time observing these & paying our respects as much as we could. Also within the monastery there was a lookout point at the top, which gave an unspoiled view of the entire valley. This vantage point alone is worthy of the long drive/hike up. Within the Ostrog Monastery’s Upper Monastery are two primary churches, which are within small caves in the mountain. One is at the top of the Monastery staircases, The Church of the Holy Cross. At the base of the Upper Monastery is the Church of the Presentation. This is where St. Basil of Ostrog’s relics are. We approached the entrance where a very kind monk ushered us in to observe the small room. It was hard not to feel the seriousness & importance of the room to the monks. It was a feeling neither of us could’ve prepared for, & surely one that we’ll never forget.
Once we completed our tour of the Ostrog Monastery, it was time to make our way to our next Airbnb location in the touristy coastal town of Budva. The drive from Ostrog Monastery to Budva took us through Podgorica & through some pretty spectacular mountaintops, before coasting down the mountain & into one of the most vibrant towns in Montenegro.
We hope you enjoyed the video & feel free to subscribe if you’re new!! Thanks so much for tuning in & see you in the next video where we tour the Montenegro Riviera!!

My partner and I are getting lost starting in May. Now that you’re a few months in, do you have enough advice for a lessons learned episode? :)

THAT'S AMAZING!!! As far as a lessons learned video, that's honestly a great idea! Off the top of my head, one thing that we've learned is when traveling via plane, it's pretty vital that we check out the plane ahead of time on SeatGuru. If you're unfamiliar with SeatGuru, it's basically a way to see what your seat on the plane will be like. When we flew from I believe Barcelona to Malta, we booked a window seat for the GoPro footage but that ended up being the one seat without a window. So ALWAYS check SeatGuru first😂 We've also learned that if you have any doubt before leaving on whether you'll need an item while you're gone, then odds are you probably won't need it. I know we've gotten rid of so much since our What We Packed video & it's felt AMAZING! Less really can mean more sometimes. We'll definitely try and find some more examples though & make a vlog soon to address more of these!!

Monastery is the place of miracles. One of the bigest religious places of Serbs. The "monk" U talk abouth is Saint Vasilije Ostroški. The caves where the monastery was built are actually the caves where the Saint himself hid and lived. Ostrog Monastery is a place of healing for people of different faiths. Not only Serbs but all nations of the world come to the monastery. There is a legend associated with Saint Vasilij Ostroski, that he is the only walking Saint whose socks are changed by the monks every morning. For this reason, most people try to sleep in the monastery. Never in my life have I heard that anyone has ever experienced an injury or an accident near the monastery, and you saw the appearance of the road when you went up. That land is simply holy.
