Osmose Expressive E Synth Demo and History of keyboard vibrato with Ondioline and Ondes Martenot
Музыка
Steve Christie demonstrates the brilliant polyphonic ‘wiggle machine’ that is the Osmose by Expressive E, and compares its technology to vintage keyboards The Ondes Martenot and the Ondioline.

Ondes with the show!
Saw it advertised a lot and thought it looked weird. Seeing you plsy it, now I totally get it!
great sounds!
Some of the patches at the end just sound amazing in my opinion! Especially due to the precise control which MPE gives access to. Really nice to watch you playing modern type gear like the "Expression E" this time. I'm looking forward to the upcoming episodes and have to think about about how cool it would be to control some filter sweeps in real time using those awesome keys ... All the best and thank you for sharing this video :-)!

I love the sound of the Ondioline. The Osmose sounds like it would be nice to use on film scores.

Totally agree
A dizzying array of sounds and effects. Nice machine. (The last one that you demo’ed for us) Among the musical styles I like are dirges. IE Clockwork Orange music, Blade Runner had a great score too. So I liked that synth keyboard MIDI thing.
Thank you kind sir! I always love your videos. "The Most Expressive Coronation Street" 😁😁

24:54 There's 6 steps in an octave, so 96 steps is 16 octaves. That literally goes beyond the limits of human hearing. A 1Hz note bent up 16 octaves reaches over 65kHz. And to think they went to the trouble to build that functionality in just for us. ☺️
Those orchestral / strings patches sounds absolutely great on Osmose. That guitar patch was not that great but I wonder if this can be improved by taking some inspiration from Harpeiji (which is intereting instrument on it's own). Also there is a guy on Patreon who is working on monophonic expressive synth called Wiggler. It works similar how your Ondioline is supposed to work - there is a keyboard mounted on some brackets and you can wiggle it side by side for vibrato and press it harder for more emphasis. In Wiggler it works surprisingly well and sounds great and I hope when it's finished it will be on the cheaper side than Osmose, because I definitely want one.
Hello Steve, all of those keyboards are amazing but the Osmose is Fantastic !!

Yes they are! Cheers!
What amazing machines! The modern one sounds other worldly and at the same time somewhat “ancient Musik”. I wonder what you will create with it? Something between Sgt Pepper and “Draughtsman’s Contract”?
As soon as you tell us your name-of-the-day i have to throw a like on the vid. I already know I'll laugh and enjoy it 👍
Ooo that Osmose certainly ticks the mournful box. Its nice to see some modern instruments featuring. I like the idea of the expressive keys but coming from organ I already find piano and electronic instruments with speed and pressure sensitive keys requires greater processing power than my feeble collection of neurons can provide :~) It would be interesting to see if linking it up to a poooter gets you access to even more functionality? That reminds me I must swat up on my Coronation street theme.

That's interesting. I'm from an organ background and had similar thoughts. I got the Roli Seaboard and eventually found it more frustrating than expressive. I've also never listened to E. Power Biggs or Virgil Fox or Keith Emerson, Wakeman, Worrell, Zawinul etc. and thought once Gee, if they only had more expression.

If you hook the Osmose up to the computer, there's an editor with which you can alter existing presets or create new ones, change the MIDI or CV routing, change what the keyboard's macro controls do, and so on.
FFFFFFFFFFFFurther out adventures in sound .
You are a treasure.

I've had one since February. It's pretty well ruined every other keyboard for me. I just wish I could get mpe recording and playback to work with Cubase.

Yeah I can imagine it might cause issues with other keyboards - I had the same problem when I first got the Ondioline!

There is some software called Phase plant by Kilo Hearts which has mpe presets specifically for the Osmose. I have it, but haven't been able to get them to talk yet.

You can record Osmose fine with Cubase. I do. What problems are you having?
My first experience of this sort of thing was playing a reproduction renaissance clavichord - where the key-vibrato is called "bebung." kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaN3qbCwdNLRhJM.html

Oh yes! I had a clavichord some years ago - yes bebung! Of course!
Funny that through 100 years, all these keyboards were made by a french guys.
Not so much "Expressive E" as "Impressive, eh?"
