OSINT At Home #3 - Advanced Search Operators with Translate

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This tutorial is part 3 of the OSINT At Home series. It covers how to use the Google Advanced Search Operators with the Google Translate Plugin to find more in your research.
On the outset, Google ‘Dorks’ (also referenced as Google Advanced Search techniques) and the Google Translate feature are simple tools, but the use of those tools combined can be quite powerful. While this tutorial is created for those starting out in the world of open source investigations, it shows that through a bit of flexibility in your online processes, you can start to pick up more information and be more precise in your online research.
For the Google Dorks section in this video, I go through how to look up pages that are restricted to time, all of the pages of a specific website, and keywords in the URL. However later in this tutorial, I also go through searching for specific filetypes in a website and in another language. These are very simple search techniques that are an introduction to this methodology and I have listed resources further down that include a much longer list of Google Dorks search techniques.
The OSINT At Home series is useful for those looking to find digital breadcrumbs and pick up some methods of open source intelligence (OSINT), digital investigations and good old plain research. No matter who you are, or where you are in the world, you can follow these tutorials from home with publicly available information to answer questions such as who, what, where and when.

    Imagine the look on the face of a journalist from the 1900s if they could watch this video. The tools we have available to us for free are absolutely incredible.

    I only wish I knew how to do this when I was a journalist in 2009. Would have made me a better reporter that's for sure!

    I spent over an hour trying to figure out how to search by a date range. I used to have that toolbar with the Tools menu, but appearantly one of their latest updates took it away from me! I found a workaround which seems to work. if I use the before: and after: operators on dates in yyyy-mm-da format surrounded by quotes in the Google search bar. Example: "top 10 horror movies before:2018-12-31 and after:2018-01-01” will return postings for 2018. The operators can be used independantly too. I miss the calendar date pop up, but this gets me out of the rabbit hole! Great series, Ben. I'm taking copious notes.

    At 5.22 you suddenly jump into the Google Hacking Database...What's that? I didn't get the connection. Thanks

    Good point and thanks for pulling me up on that. I edited out bits of that section as I wanted to show what the Google Hacking Database is as a resource for Google Dorks and the creative use of search strings. I did edit out some sections to not show potential confidential data that might be exposed.

    Question: Does a security program like Norton for example, prevent or interfere with the collection of metadata? How about a VPN?

  • @TAHyron

    @TAHyron

    it's usually social media like Twitter which delete metadata from an update photo. But from a security program i don't think so
