Even though the actual executive producer, Hal Wallis, was the one who worked on Casablanca, Jack Warner took full credit for the Oscar once it succeeded. Hal resigned and moved to Paramount the day after this

Actually, it was not the next day... „In March 1944, Wallis won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 16th Academy Awards. During the ceremony, when the award was announced for Casablanca, Wallis got up to accept, but studio head Jack L. Warner rushed up to the stage "with a broad, flashing smile and a look of great self-satisfaction," Wallis later recalled. "I couldn't believe it was happening. Casablanca had been my creation; Jack had absolutely nothing to do with it. As the audience gasped, I tried to get out of the row of seats and into the aisle, but the entire Warner family sat blocking me. I had no alternative but to sit down again, humiliated and furious... Almost forty years later, I still haven't recovered from the shock." This incident would lead Wallis to leave Warner Bros. the next month.”...

Axtors and audience are quite modestly dressed, probably due to the general mood of the war. Compare the awards for 1940, Ginger Rogers wears a stunning gown.

During the war years there was a ration on precious metals, and so Oscar statutes were temporarily made of plaster. In 1946 all were replaced with the real deal. The base of the award was also raised to make it more modern.

+Jack Smith No, it was only during World War II that the Oscars were made of plaster to preserve gold for the war effort. After it was over, the awards returned to their original golden luster. Don't know if the winners during that period later had their sad plastic ones replaced as they certainly should have, but I do know that Barry Fitzgerald broke the head off his with a golf ball or club a few years after winning for Going My Way.
