The materials used for 3D printing are as diverse as the products that result from the process. As such, 3D printing is flexible enough to allow manufacturers to determine a product's shape, texture, and strength. Best of all, these qualities can be achieved with far fewer steps than are normally required in traditional means of production. In addition, these products can be made with various types of 3D printing materials.
In order for a 3D printing to be carried out in the form of a finished product, a detailed image of the design in question must first be sent to the printer. Details are rendered in standard triangular language (STL), which conveys the complexities and dimensions of a given design and allows a computerized 3D printer to see a design from all sides and angles.
Basically, an STL project is the equivalent of several flat projects in a computerized file.
The 3D printing industry is expected to pass the 10-digit mark in the near future and plastic is expected to be the main material to drive this market forward. As recently concluded in a study by SmarTech Markets Publishing, the 3D printing market is likely to exceed $1.4 billion before 2020. With continued market expansion, the industry has sought new ways to produce plastics, including the use of organic ingredients. such as soybean and corn oil. Consequently, plastics must become the greenest option in 3D printing.
PLASTIC
Of all the 3D printing raw materials in use today, plastic is the most common. Plastic is one of the most diverse materials for 3D printed toys and household items. Products made with this technique include tableware, vases, and action figures. Available in transparent form as well as bright colors - of which red and lime green are particularly popular - plastic filaments are sold on spools and can have a matte or glossy texture.
With its firmness, flexibility, smoothness and brilliant range of color choices, the appeal of plastic is easy to understand. As a relatively affordable option, plastic is often light on the pockets of creators and consumers.
Plastic products are usually made with FDM printers, in which thermoplastic filaments are melted and molded into shape, layer by layer.
POST
Today's most modern 3D printers use powdered materials to build products. Inside the printer, the powder is melted and distributed in layers until the desired thickness, texture and patterns are obtained.
RESINS
One of the most limiting and therefore least used materials in 3D printing is resin. Compared to other applicable 3D materials, resin offers limited flexibility and strength. Made of liquid polymer, the resin reaches its final state upon exposure to UV light. Resin is usually found in black, white and clear varieties, but some printed items have also been produced in orange, red, blue and green.
METAL
The second most popular material in the 3D printing industry is metal, which is used through a process known as direct metal laser sintering or DMLS. This technique has already been adopted by air travel equipment manufacturers who have used metal 3D printing to speed up and simplify component construction.
DMLS printers have also won over manufacturers of jewelry products, which can be produced much faster and in greater quantities - all without the long hours of painstakingly detailed work - with 3D printing.
Metal can produce a stronger and arguably more diverse range of everyday items. Jewelers used steel and copper to produce bracelets engraved on 3D printers. One of the main advantages of this process is that the engraving work is done by the printer. As such, the bracelets can be finished by charging the case in just a few mechanically programmed steps that don't involve the hands-on work that engraving work required.
