All 4th generation Orvis Helios fly-fishing rods are built with the finest components, designed for maximum performance, as well as aesthetics. Our rod designers were nothing short of obsessed with detail when it came to creating these best-in-class fly rods. As head designer Shawn Combs says, “Details matter,” and all 4th-generation Helios fly rods are built to the highest specifications possible. The reel seats feature military-spec aluminum with Type III anodization, also known as “hard” anodizing because of the incredible durability that results from this process. Freshwater rods offer attractive wood inserts, while saltwater models use all aluminum to withstand the harshest salt environments.
The Helios F and D models are distinguished by their different blank colors. Helios F rods are built around a deep matte olive blank, while Helios D models are straight matte black. Color differentiation continues throughout the rod-from the F and D logos to the thread wraps.
The hardware and guides in the new Helios fly rods are also top-of-the-line, from the titanium-frame stripping guides with silicon carbide inserts to the REC Recoil snake guides. The handle is made from Flor-grade cork, which is the best of the best. Less than 5% of all natural cork can be considered Flor grade, which features few or no pits or grooves. The larger models feature a special composite cork “gas pedal” to go under your thumb when you need some extra power.
Helios fly rods are built with 8 different handle configurations, from a simple Half Wells grip on the lightest trout models to 1.25- and 2.25-inch fighting butts on the Big Game Series fly rods.
