ORV Trails at Manistee National Forest - Baldwin, Michigan

In this episode, I get a chance to get away for a day with some friends to do the one thing that I possibly love more than camping. We headed north to Baldwin, Michigan where (from my opinion) has the best trail riding in Michigan, for the kind of trails I like.
Every year older I get, I wonder if it's not going to be as enjoyable as the last, but every time I'm reminded this is my favorite place to be.
We arrived shortly after they had just groomed the trails, so in recent years, this was as good of riding conditions as I can ever remember. The fact that it had just rained more than an inch the couple days before, made it even more amazing, because we could ride close together, and not have to worry about just inhaling dust non-stop.
It's not camping, but it's still a blast. Come along with us as we spend the day on the ORV trails!

    Looks like you had a good time! Hope you learned a lesson about always having the necessary and proper recovery gear with you. What your buddy had is a recovery strap, not a tow strap (although it can be used for towing as you did). A tow strap has hooks on the ends and should NEVER be used for recovery, as you can easily kill someone that way. 👍

    Yep it’s always a good time. We had all the gear we needed for tools and such, just overlooked the pin and grabbed the recovery strap instead of a tow strap. He’s a first responder so that was just the strap he kept with him.

    It sometimes happens. On a quad you can normally get in the ditch pretty quick. I don’t ride as hard as I used to for that reason. We also go on weekdays so the traffic is almost non existent. I think we only passed people 3 or 4X the whole day.

    Thanks Kevin! I have not. I had a RZR that I sold a couple years ago and wanted to try it in there but never got around to it. On a quad I just haven’t wanted to let my phone get trashed being exposed on the handlebars with all the dust and stuff that’s in the air while riding. Planning a trip to Hatfield McCoy Trails here in the next couple months I think. Will probably try to find something like Ride Command to use on those.

    I realize I'm late to reply, but I didn't have an answer. If you look on the Manistee Forest ORV Club Facebook page, there's normally some halfway updated trail info there on a weekly basis. Someone commented yesterday that the trails were great right now.

  • @WeekendScampers

    @WeekendScampers

    I honestly don’t know if you can ride at night. I’d assume no, but that’s my personal guess. There are a couple campgrounds out there that I know of. Some have full hookups and some are primitive only that are state owned and you just register right there on site.

    Does someone actually groom those trails or were they just smooth from all of the rain?

  • @WeekendScampers

    @WeekendScampers

    They groom them on a halfway normal basis depending how much use they get and the weather I would assume plays into it. Of all the times I’ve gone, they’re more maintained than not. They overall do a great job with it.

  • @WeekendScampers

    Of all the trails I’ve visited in Michigan these are the widest and most maintained. You could pass two side by sides going opposite directions if you needed to, you’d just need to slow down. If you stop at Peacock and buy a map it’ll show you all the roads you can take into the towns, but yes if you get off the trails you can go into most towns and get food, fuel, etc.

    @@Kawasaki-qb8hh I’m not sure what the rules for the winter season are. I know there was some discussion about ATV’s vs sleds and who could ride where when, but I think they decided the trails were open to wheeled vehicles all year. If you check out “Manistee Forest ORV Club” on Facebook, that’s the organization that grooms the trails and there’s lots of info over there. I’m just speculating so it’d probably be good to do some digging before you head there if you’re going late in the season.

    If it's a groomed snowmobile trail, ORVs are not allowed to be on them between Dec 1 and April 30, if there is snow on the ground and the trails are being groomed.
