Orphaned baby elephant Naboishu is rescued | Sheldrick Trust
On the 27th March the SWT/KWS Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit was called to perform a post-mortem on an elephant female known as ‘Namunyak' who was found dead mysteriously that morning in the Masai Mara. She had been found lifeless, and her young calf was in the company of her herd who had moved a short distance away.
Her baby was a milk-dependent calf of 18 months old, still too young to survive in the wild without his mother’s milk, so the herd was monitored but they remained high on a hill and the wet conditions hampered any rescue possibility. The following day, once the herd had descended from the hill, the baby was darted with a tranquiliser to calm him down enabling a straight forward rescue involving KWS, along with County and Conservancy rangers.
This film tells the story of his rescue and you can read the full account on our website, where you can choose to adopt Naboishu and help support his care: www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.or...
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

God bless all the keepers . They are the angels that each baby needs when lost their mom. I feel bad for the baby but He got Lots of elephants friends and good people to care for him
I support the Sheldrick Trust by adopting an orphaned elephant and the updates often mention how loud this little guy is when it is time to get his bottle and during his feeding. I hope someday they will post a video showing that behavior. He's such a boisterous little guy!!
Awww great job! He looks so cute! Good luck little guy!
AWESOME 💞💞💞🤣
Good job dswt
I found an update on him! He is currently 18 months old!
Though all the ellies carry out their routine like normal but still in their eyes, we can feel the loss of their mom, which have kept some of the space empty. But thanks to everyone in this trust who are taking efforts to build them a confident personality.
How beautiful it is to see all those babies go for a walk together ❤ and what a relief that there is another baby who integrates and is happy with his rescued siblings. ❤ thank you for protecting them and for the effort and dedication you put into these incredible and beautiful creatures. !!!❤
Ah, the Men In Green 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🐘🐘🐘🥰🥰🥰

The website says his mother had an abscess in the abdomen which was leaking pus and caused an embolism in the lungs, triggering a fatal heart attack. She was a well-known cow elephant Naimunak, fitted with a radio collar as part of the Mara Elephant Project.
Thank you. I am happy she has friends and family like you. I am happy to adopt him along with all others who want to virtually adopt him. Larger than life personality. You guys are the best
Captive baby elephant is more stronger and healthy than wild.because they have also mental satisfaction.because in wild they always fear about lion.
Great teamwork by staff. Signed up to adopt a calf🐘🐘
❤❤❤❤❤🐘🐘🐘🐘
So adorable so happy he was rescued so tragic about his mother passing but he will go back to wild to keep population growing again. He managed flight well.
I think a lot of his confidence came from there having been other youngsters in his herd with whom he’d played and interacted. Taking 10 days before he could be trusted tells you that’s one headstrong little boy, lol.
I wish there was a way to track these herds and once baby is old enough to survive without milk, could rejoin their family herd. So many of the babies are found without knowing which herd they came from, when you do know, it’d be nice to re-unite them if at all possible.
Naboishu is so beautiful and very lovely ❤ he greets everyone ! even it was difficult when he arrived !! once again a baby who lost his mum !! it’s so difficult to watch them with a blanket in their eyes their legs with tight ties !😢it must be terrible for them !! they are all so brave and courageous ! it’s amazing ! love them so much !! J’adore when their 3 trunks are touching and communicating 💕💕💕 this is very cute ! 🥰
Little guy is 20 months old now!
Im watching this in 2023. Usually know im going to watch a sad ending when a name is newand the rescue was a year ago. Its a way to each life. To feel loved and protected in his final days matters. ❤
que lindos,,parabens,elefantes tratados com amor

How did the mother die?
Namunyak, his mother was fitted with a radio collar as part of the Mara Elephant Project. That's how the researchers were alerted - absence of movement. She died of a fatal heart attack, triggered by an embolism in the lung. She had an abscess in the abdomen caused by an old injury. That set off a chain of events.

In cases like that, when an orphan calf remains with the herd, it's not possible that another mother adopt him?
@jensage58

only if there was a lactating mother that had recently lost her own calf....those in the wild reserve their milk for their own calves..survival of the fittest..strong words but true in the wild..
@patriciacouto5956

@@jensage58 I thought the elephant moms could feed two calfs at the same time, so would not be a problem to adopt an orphan. Thanks for answer.

Hi Patricia. Elephant twins are very rare, and survival of both twins to adulthood is even rarer. A lactating mother of a milk-dependent calf instinctively knows that adopting another milk-dependent calf will reduce the chances of her own offspring's survival. Her own baby must be her priority, therefore taking on the burden of another mouth to feed is not an option. So, sadly, a milk-dependent orphan calf, like this little chap, has no realistic chance of survival without human intervention. Older, weaned calves, however, who lose their mothers are often taking under the wing of the matriarch and other members of the herd.

@@sinistral9629 Thanks for the detailed explanation, I really appreciate it. I know that twins are really rare but I didn't know that feed both calves was so difficult for the mother. In every rescue I wonder if it was not possible to the calf remains in the wild without human intervention. Most of the rescues are pretty obvious that could not be avoided, but in that case I thought maybe wasn't necessary. Thanks again.
His herd didn't have any other lactating females, I'm guessing? You don't actually say, but there would be no reason to take him away otherwise...
Any updates on him?
🤗😘❤🐘🤣
When I see a herd trying to care for baby, I hate to see it removed. Is there research documented that baby elephants die in herd? I hope they took the correct baby. Poor baby was charging because he wanted to go home to his herd/family. I wish and feel in these cases, they should track herd and when baby is off milk, reintegrate him back with his herd.
สวัสดีค่ะ
The print is too small to read the story
No mystery how his mother died, damn poachers
I don't know if anyone else is having trouble reading your comments but I haven't been able to because the wording is very small and some of them are white or black either way I can't read them.
