Original Xbox version 1.6 won't power on fix

Ойындар

This is a video tutorial on how to replace a bad transistor on a version 1.6 Xbox motherboard. Replacing this transistor usually repairs the problem of a version 1.6 motherboard refusing to power on. The part number of the transistor is MMBT3906LT1

This fixed worked for me when I put a 1.6 in the wrong case! Had no power at all, I just pulled a transistor from a logic level converter I had laying around as it seemed like a likely drop in replacement and after some messing around getting the transistor to lay flat I soldered it in. Then I removed the extra metal tab from the case and reassembled and it booted right up! Thanks very much for this video! :-)

Thanks for: 1) Doing this with a regular & cheap conical tip that most people will actually have. 2) Not editing or redoing the removal of the transistor. It's always incredibly frustrating trying to do a "simple" repair by referring to a KZread video, but where the uploader: * Uses perfect / brand new parts. * Has a huge well equipped workshop with expensive / specialist tools, that most people won't have or aren't willing to purchase for a one-off repair. * Edits out all the ugly, fiddly bits that end up causing a problem when you try to do it yourself. Is there a way to visually see that this transistor is causing the problem? Similar to the way capacitors bulge (and leak).

Hey, no problem that is exactly what I was going for when making the video. The answer to your question is unfortunately, no there isn't really a way to tell visually that the transistor has gone bad. There is another to test with a multimeter though, look here kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGSepbesldG0o7w.html thanks for watching!

This totally works. I recommend using two soldering irons to remove the part without a heat gun since there is a cap right next to it.

Hi! I just got a non-working Xbox trying to repair it. It's a 1.6a inside an older case so I think that's the main problem. It's not turning on at all. Checking the PSU cable that goes to the mainboard, I only get about 3,5V from the orange cables and 0 in anything else. Is that related? How can I check the voltage on the transistor if it doesn't turn on? Thanks

Thank you very much! Mine had the same exact issue and by replacing the transistor it came back to life (it was not powering on AT ALL). You can also use a regular non-smd version like 2N3906 and works just fine (just be carefull with E B C connections)

bought a used 1.6 (manufactured in Aug 2004) and it worked great. I was using composite. I decided to get a 3rd party component cable to get the most out if it on my crt. First time I tried with component cable, I got a unstable image, and the system shut off after 4 seconds. Tried again and same thing. I revered back to composite and booted up the xbox after a 20 second break and it worked great. I played it few times and no problems. Returned the cables and decided to stick to composite. Tried to power on the xbox later that day and it stopped powering on altogether. It really made me sad to see this happen. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thank you

Question: My 1.6 died a little while back and I replace the five leaking capacitors on the bottom right side of the board close to the power supply. Removing the solder to do so, was very rough and the areas for solder became black a few places, but since it powered on for two minutes I am not sure if I am the one causing it's current failure. Could this transistor be another reason as well?

Would the meter return a result value if the system won’t power on at all? Like not even for a brief second? If not is there a way I could still test the transistor to see if it needs to be replaced?

I hope you can help me. I bought a second hand 1.6 ( Aug 2004). It worked great until with composite but I bought 3rd party component to improve the Picture on my crt. I hooked up 3rd party component cables to it. The picture with component on a crt was broken, the disc drive opened halfway and system shut off. It did it again. Then I left it for 30 seconds and reverted back to composite and it worked as before. But it stopped working after that. Any idea what happened. I keep thinking those 3rd party component cables bricked my system. Plz respond.

Not to do a necro, but what were the symptoms of the Xbox? When you say not booting, was it powering up at all? My 1.6 out of the blue is turning off and on 3 times and throwing me the red and green ring. It is taking power, but not booting. I'm scratching my head over here. I don't yet have a multimeter, but I would like to know the symptoms of the Xbox you repaired here. Also, if you know about the 3x on/off error please let me know.

  • @Floydzabarber

The damaged transistor would result in the Xbox not powering up at all. The problem you are having is your Xbox is fragging and it could be the result of many different things. Check for solder bridges on your motherboard and clean them up, check for leaky capacitors and replace them if they are bulging.

When I visited El Paso not too long ago (it was back in May), after hooking up the Xbox, I press the power button and it won't turn on right away (which doesn't make sense since the original Xbox always turns on right away after pressing the power button and the eject button since I first got it for Christmas 2004). In order to power it on, I have to hold the power button for a while until it starts boosting up. After it powers on, it starts working. Is there an problem with it? It was in great shape since December 25th, 2004 until I encounter with this minor issue (and I have a version 1.6).

Never hear of that problem before. Check the wiring leading to the front panel pcb, maybe a wire or two is not making good contact. Also check the front panel pcb connector that plugs into the motherboard, for any loose wires.

Maybe the drop in framerate is due to the optical drive having a hard time reading the disk. Maybe the laser is on its way out. Softmod the Xbox, then run the games from the hard drive, and see if the problem persists.

So using more of that wisdom, I grabbed another xbox 1.6 Crystal with modchip and done it again.... Again NOTHING WORKED.... So I then put the board back in to the Crystal 1.6... to my horror.... I just did this on my 1.6 and sadly, it didn't fix my problem. I can't even get any readings from the collector, not even briefly. My Xbox started suddenly not powering on a couple months back. First it turned off after staying on for about 3 seconds and it would stay on a little longer everytime I pressed the power button. I could even get it to stay on long enough to start a game and play it without any problems for as long as I wanted. Recently it got worse and I couldn't get it started anymore no matter how long I kept tapping the power button.

You should be getting somewhere around 3.3V at the collector regardless of whether the console is on or off. If you don't, then you could try replacing the transistor, and if it works after that, you can try if the old PSU still works. Maybe you'll end up with two working consoles after all

After plugging in the power plug to xbox run system, but button "Power" does not respond to pressing, ie It is included only on the power plug. bt. DVD-Tray running, a chip "xecuter 2.3 lite" - that the chip and without it, all the behavior of the system also comes the same error in the service mode. The analysis of the case and after some time (10 min) saw strong heating "of the North Bridge and the GPU." as well as on board the bursting of the electrolyte was found labeled "1F / 2.5V" - replaced the "1000mf / 6.3V." I checked the transistor power and it's at 3.3VDC, which is a good sign, the PSU is working, so I might connect the power/eject board and see what happens. Either that or the caps need a charge or something.

@@RetroPCUser It could be power supply related. If you have another power supply swap it with the one that is in there now and see if it resolves the issue. If you don't have another power supply, take out the one you have now and check the solder joints on the bottom of the board to see if any are cracked. If they are reflow them. This is a very common problem on foxlink power supplies.

Aaand, for anyone that also has this problem... The smd code for the transistor that goes bad (At least on my 2005 1.6 manufactured in China) is "2T" you can check more info in this link www.s-manuals.com/smd/2t Is a PNP transistor in a SOT23 form factor that can handle up to -500 mA of continuous current. I have not been able to find that exact part, but in my 1.1 Xbox I found this one www.s-manuals.com/smd/a1 Is an A1I transistor that is on the back side of the mobo just at the left of the single row powe supply connector. There are two of them, so you can mess up once an still have a chance, but do not try to power back that 1.1 Xbox before getting the propper replacement for him!. The only difference between this two is that the second one handles only -200mA of current so it will work but you still need the propper replacement, soon or later the A1 is going to die from overcurrent.

That way you wouldnt of scored the board by keeping the iron on it so long. Maybe you know this by now since the video is old. But this comment may help some people coming across the video. Anyway, good job for what you had to work with. I would be also not leaving any bridges like that. If that via was not part of the circuit. You would short out your board.
