We must stop playing on words !! I summarize once and for all in order to no longer receive stupid comments ! All these comments that I get as: "we hear several guitars" or "MK is playing all the parts at the same time" etc ... so I'm going to shut it all down once and for all ! You have to think a minimum, YES it's an isolated track from Mark Knopfler, YES it's indeed from the recording of 1978, YES we mean by moment the second guitar which plays in rhythm , YES it's the isolated track of his guitar but at rare moments we hear a second guitar of a second track (maybe played by MK himself on a second audio track), YES this track is well taken from a video game. This audio file is a gift for guitarists who want to work the Knopfler style. I'll say it again, but even like that, while reading new coms I get the impression that some people don't listen, or don't want to understand, much like those who try to convince the rest of the world that the earth is flat. No the earth is not flat and no there is not a single audible track here. These are 2 tracks ! I have been a guitarist for several decades, without bragging, I consider myself a specialist in Knopfler Style and it only takes me 2 seconds to distinguish the 2 tracks. Listen to the plan at 0.30, you hear the bend on the G string in 4 fret with which it relaxes and bends again quickly, we clearly hear this little solo and the rhythm at the same time, the bend on the G string in 4 th fret while we hear the rhythm on the chord of ”A major” in the 2nd fret and we hear the note ”A” of the G string in the 2nd fret. Explain to me how we can play the note ”A” on A chord on 2th fret in rythm and make little solo with a bend at the same time on the same string in the 4th fret while hearing the 2 notes AT THE SAME TIME... IMPOSSIBLE NO ? Yes it's impossible, We agree ! There are also many other moments where you can clearly hear the 2 guitars AT THE SAME TIME in very different places on the neck. I made the tablature of Sultans, Alchemy and other Live versions, I made covers of Sultans and I affirm it, WE HEAR 2 DISTINCT TRACKS !! I hope everything is clear now, so stop the coms to say everything and anything ! So, Are you going to stay on the side of those who think the earth is flat ? Yann

Thanks for the insights and clarification. Indeed you are VERY CORRECT on many, many points here. These ARE the VERY ORIGINAL tracks! The dealio is, for the "Guitar Hero" game, the producers & developers were given what we call in the industry as "sub-channel tracks", in order to "minimize" the guitar sounds. What more than very likely happened, was the original, 2-inch, 30 inches per second, 24-track session tape spool from 1978 was accessed and "remixed" in such a way that MARK Knopfler's LEAD guitar track and his brother DAVID Knopfler's RHYTHM guitar track were combined, or better yet, DAVID'S parts were mixed into all the "quick holes" were MARK was not doing his leads. Pretty plain; very simple. It had to done that way, because the "Guitar Hero" game software COULD NOT handle 24 tracks of loseless .WAV audio. Impossible. Hence also, the drums...the engineers during the recording process back in '78, probably had up to EIGHT microphones on PICK WITHERS drum kit, but ALL those microphones HAD to be "sub-mixed" down to a stereo 2-track for "Guitar Hero". I understand your frustration of alot of the commenters ripping on you, I know how crappy that can feel, however the reality of "original production mixes" AND "subsequent interactive mixes" are ALWAYS altered per the application. AND, in order to limit the guitar track...BOTH...were morphed together into one full stereo-2-track mix. Thank you for presenting them here; it would be a great loss if you take them down. I encourage you to retain this upload. BCRadio Audio Sound & Recording Engineer 1979-2020

As a pro guitarist of many years myself there's absolutely no mistaking that this is, indeed, Knopfler playing on that 1978 recording. For those who doubt this, I'd be confident is saying that the majority of these are 'apparent' guitarists who (because they're devoid of the required skillset) cannot tell the difference between 'playing' this (incorrectly) with a plectrum, or, (correctly) with fingers/thumb only. And yes, to repeat others, this is a stem mix of two guitar tracks - Knopfler + rhythm. Knopflers own track can be instantly distinguished - note also the repeated use of Chorus effect in the short sections just before the verses and solos kick in.

BTW, This is NOT the "original" guitar track, this is actually the guitar "stem"(premixed and taken from the bus) from the rip from either "Rock Band" or "Guitar Hero". Notice how the lead punches silence the rhythm guitar? That's a typical Guitar Hero mix. In both games, they mix the lead and gutar tracks so the player plays the rhythm when there is no lead. When the lead comes in, the rhythm fades. The reason these games use "multitracks" is so when the player messes up, they can inject the "bad note" sound which in turn, silences the track, but the band keeps on playing. This set of multitrack stems (yes, you can get the whole band), is available in several places on the net, along with many more (like as in hundreds more). I have this set and have worked with it recently, which is the reason I know exactly where it's from.

You are VERY SO CORRECT! Warner Brothers (in this particular case) leases out these "sub-mixed" tracks (aka: "stems"...ha!...they weren't called "stems" back in '78...just good ol' fashion "tracks") to such interactive gaming companies like "Guitar Hero" & "Garage Band". Your insights...ALL OF THEM...are SO VERY correct. I even went into greater detail (mindless minutae!) in an earlier comment back in 2020, that's still in this thread. The only thing I didn't catch, was that "3rd" guitar". Mark probably did the main solo (well...INDEED HE DID) and then also a rhythm guitar track (as a "guide" track, or "demo" track") then his brother Dave, did yet another. NOTE: I HATE FLIES! But DANG!!!...I would have LOVED to had been hanging out on one of those walls in that recording studio, during those late 1977/early 1978 recording & mixing sessions!!! DANG!!! BCRadio

What more than very likely happened here, was that the original, 2-inch, 30 inches per second, 24-track session tape spool from 1978...owned by Warner Brothers...was accessed and "remixed" in such a way that MARK Knopfler's LEAD guitar track and his brother DAVID Knopfler's RHYTHM guitar track were combined, or better yet, DAVID'S parts were mixed into all the "quick holes" were MARK was not doing his leads. BCRadio Audio Sound & Recording Engineer 1979-2019

I found all the tracks via file sharing. I like to hear them. You find punch-ins, bleed through, and many other gems and interesting things. A good example is "Ain't no Mtn High Enough" where the bass sound is muffled and there are 2 drum tracks but put together is wonderful. The Sultans Of Swing tracks show how there were punch ins and such.
