Oriented Meteorite Education: Signs of Orientation, Box Openings, Rare Meteorites -Weekly Hangout!
Ғылым және технология
Marco Gaisser explains his criteria for an oriented meteorite in video format from Germany. He provides perfect examples as he goes. He also does his first unboxing video ever. It happens to be his first meteorite purchase of 2021, an oriented HED. Listen to him show its amazing fusion crust off and explain what he believes the classification to be and why.
Maxime Denoncin not only joined us on the Hangout (at 3am in Belgium) but submitted another great video that highlights his microscope and camera setup. He also does an unboxing video of a package from me! On top of his Gourara 003, I surprised him with a small sample of Barnstable. (found by my friend Stephen Amara in Massachusetts)
Mike Kelly honored the 2nd anniversary of Viñales’ fall (L6 Cuba) with a small fresh crusted “day one of sales” piece. The other was a larger crusted Viñales piece with part of its red ‘camouflage’ still visible. Axtell is a rarely seen Texas CV3 that did some time as a doorstop. Mike’s has very attractive chondrules. Happy Canyon is also rarely seen and a 1 of 1 classification (EL6/7 from Texas 1971). Can you help him ID the collection number on a Franconia (H5 Arizona)? It has a 2002 find date which makes it early Franconia material.
I showed some Viñales 36g, 42g, 51g, and 126g as we discussed the features of each one. You can’t handle the flow lines! - On my 7.1g Martian Shergottite (NWA 12594 pair) I share two of my NWA “Golden Pallasites” (NWA 12186 pot. pair). The 10.5g has a natural hole and the 28g is a sculpted piece of cosmic art. I also had to get the group’s feedback on my 12.3g highly oriented Chelyabinsk ‘shield’. I share recent photos I took of my 20g Touat 005 (Lunar), a 233g Rumuruti that is currently being classified, the 7.1g Mars mention above, and a 12.6g slice of Chergach (H5 witnessed Mali 2007) that displays the harder to find melt part of the H5.
Pat Brown shared his newest large chondrite. It is about 8.3kg and full of chondrule blowouts. Reflected cross polarized light is used to ‘look into’ it, hinting that it may be an LL-class. He has a 734g unclassified NWA meteorite (LL3 prov) that is “cheek by jowl” full of chondrules. It also has ‘hitchhikers’ on the trailing side, another sign of orientation.

I once saw a Meteorite come straight down. Right above us when we were skywatching as teens. Small light, then brighter, and bugger, and then flickering. And then gone. More than 30 years later I think I found it, thought it just sat in a box for the last decade, and its shape is like a tear drop. The crazy thing is I think its from the moon. I have now decided to get it checked.

@@TopherspinMeteorites No questions right now. I enjoy the fascinating subject.
Hello from a new(ish) meteorite collector! Have just discovered your channel and it's truly a treasure trove of information to soak up. Also looking forward to joining the facebook group. I have just one suggestion - would it be possible to, in the future, show guest videos / photos / slides in full screen? This was ridiculously tiny :)

I really applicate the overly kind words! I hope you are subscribed and pass the word around. I have asked that all videos are submitted in widescreen rather than vertically. That should fix the problem.

@@TopherspinMeteorites Subscribed right way! I can now see that your other meetup videos do not have this problem with guest videos showing in only a small portion of the screen, so sorry, you can disregard my complaint :) And I agree, portrait videos are hard to integrate into a standard landscape orientation video. Anyway, looking forward to meeting new people on the forum. I have a very small collection and am on a tight budget. I love taking macro photos of my tiny slices and would love to show them off in a meetup one day.

Hi Richard, the common name for such pieces is „flight marked“ but there is no rule. That’s why I pointed out that the criteria in the video are my personal criteria 😉 Best regards Marco

Please save the stuff you dig out for a looksee under a microscope. I found gorgeous green glassy spherules in one Barringer and purple salts the same shade as those containing amino acids in Queenie Chan's work in another.

I have no interest. You said it "has every type of Lunar, Martian and Metallic Metal material inside". That statement is so wild and illogical that I know you have an Earth rock. We receive a bunch of messages with requests for our help like this every day, so we have started to direct people to our Patreon. With our new Rockhound/Hunter Supporter" tier, you are entitled to one rock identification per month, in addition to other benefits. Unfortunately, if we took the time to provide free rock identifications to each and every person who contacted us, we would have gone out of business already. We work regular jobs, so all of the hundreds of hours of content we create for the channel is done during our free time. We recently just started the Patreon last month, so we are hoping that people who enjoy the work we do and would like access to our time support us so we can keep creating content. Thanks so much! www.patreon.com/user/membership?u=3089538 Sue & Topher

A rock only has value once it's looked at by science or an expert. If you'd like to have me and my crew look at your sample, it's going to cost you $25 a month like everyone else. I get tons and tons of requests to help everyone and I make these videos available for free for everyone. My one-on-one time cost money.
