ORIENTAL KOPI - AN EXEMPLARY NON-MUSLIM RESTAURANT

ORIENTAL KOPI - AN EXEMPLARY NON-MUSLIM RESTAURANT
• ORIENTAL KOPI - AN EXE...
Our guest socio-political commentator on current affairs, Imraz Ikhbal, pays a visit to an award-winning kopitiam in Mid-Valley, Kuala Lumpur. Oriental Kopi is listed in the Malaysian Book of Records.
He was impressed that both the staff and clientele reflect the multiethnic demographics of pluralistic Malaysia, Truly Asia. He expresses the wish that more restaurants ought to serve no pork, no lard halal-compliant food without actually going through the expensive, petty, unnecessarily restrictive and bureaucratic Halal certification process because the Holy Quran does not state that a JAKIM Halal Certificate is mandatory, does it?
We feature guest commentators and others who have messages that we feel deserve a wider audience. We may not necessarily subscribe to the views expressed but we believe that instead of sweeping the elephant in the room under the carpet (to mix metaphors), our beloved nation is best served by having an informed, intelligent, rational, sensible and calm logical discourse in the public domain.
Since our Cabinet members have proven to be incapable of practising geniocracy, noocracy or even the fundamentals of rudimentary technocracy, we are left with no choice but to crowd-source geniocracy from the Rakyat in order to BUILD A BETTER MALAYSIA.

I think you are 0.001% of the Malay population in Malaysia to be so open and accepting on pork free / no pork no lard restaurants. Most of my Malay friends are questioning the halal status of chicken used by these restaurants, eventhough i told them that most of these restaurants get their supply of chicken from NSK or Lotus, they are still no convinced...now its up to you guys to change the mind set of fellow Malays in Malaysia...best of luck

In Malaysia, all non-porcine animals meant for commercial sale are required by law to be slaughtered by a halal abbatoir certified by JAKIM. Why your Malay friends are so paranoid about “ayam katok” is because of their ignorance, a result of failure our third-rate education system.

Can you cite the law that actually says this? In my local wet market, there is a chicken stall that specifically sells non halal chicken. They tell their customers that theirs is non halal, and direct the Muslim customers to the other stall (which sells halal). Is what they are doing (selling non halal chicken) illegal? If so, which body should we report this too, based on that law you mentioned?

The Muslims in Sabah and Sarawak have no issues dining with Chinese in coffee shops run by Chinese. They said what is wrong cos they never eat things that are not halal. those in Sabah and Sarawah are truly muhibbah and hope the trend stays and don't get the bad influence from West M'sia.

I lived in Kota Kinabalu for four years and enjoyed my hinava, latuk, bambangan jeruk, and kerbau meat (I’m vegan for five years now, though). The beautiful thing about Sabah is that it is the only non-Muslim majority state in Malaysia. Mahathir tried to destroy that with ‘Project IC.’ There are so many things us ‘Orang Semenanjung’ can learn from Sabahans in terms of race relations and ethnic harmony living in a truly tolerant pluralistic society.

I think at the end of the day, it's up to an individual's own discretion. I have a Muslim friend who is quite particular about the halal cert and absolutely within his right to do so. We respect that and usually find halal certified restaurants to dine together, no problem. I think Malaysia can be a better country if people don't play up issues which are really non-existent and done for the sake of hidden agendas, usually politically motivated. Anyway well done Oriental Kopi for being well-received by Muslims even without halal cert because you did all the right things.

THE GREEN PARTY OF MALAYSIA Founded in 2011 by Azlan Adnan as a political party to advance the environmental agenda of environmental NGOs into the political landscape. We are NOT, I repeat, NOT associated with PAS or the recent Green Wave phenomenon. Green ideology goes back a long way in history but only formalised more recently though the work of Norwegian philosopher Arne Næss as a branch of environmental philosophy known as ‘deep ecology,’ a term coined by Næss himself, who, in turn, was deeply influenced by Rachel Carson's seminal 1962 book Silent Spring in his vision of deep ecology. Næss combined his ecological vision with Gandhian satyagraha (nonviolent resistance). My vision for the party is to have a non-race and non-religious based political party that appeals to Malaysians of all ethnicities, religious persuasion, urban or rural, young or old, T20, M40 or B40. In my lifetime alone, the global population has tripled from 2.7 billion to 8.01 billion. Thie tripling of the world population in 65 years has never happened before in the history of human civilisation. All the problems we see in the world today whether its pollution (in its various forms), rising prices and inflation, food shortages, climate change (rising temperatures and flooding), species extinction, habitat destruction or even natural resource depletion are all but aspects of one big problem - global over-population, There are no easy answers. That is why we promote geniocracy - a form of government characterised by creative problem-solving. For that to happen, there are three necessary conditions - noocracy (government by the wise), technocracy (government by the technically competent) and meritocracy (basically government by the best people for the job). We are at the opposite end of the political spectrum to kakistocracy (government by the inept and incompetent) and kleptocracy (government by self-serving opportunistic thieves). We had initially applied to register the party 12 years ago and last year we made a fresh application. Twelve years ago, I was advised by my political mentor, the late Haris Ibrahim, not to waste time and legal fees trying to get the party registered. After all, no Home Minister in his/her right mind would approve the registration of a competitor, particularly one whose ideology has potentially larger appeal to Malaysians than his own party. So, we decided to exist as a virtual party on social media, doing our bit to increase political literacy of Malaysians, inspiring other political parties to include environmental issues in their respective party manifestos. More about what we stand for may be viewed in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y5ZpyNSRZLqnYto.html Our stance hasn’t changed but its become increasingly more relevant and urgent as time passes. I believe we should not question or belittle Malays or Muslims who do not wish to eat at no pork, no lard restaurants. It is their right and we need to respect that in a multiracial country. Halal Jakim is not a simple body existing to make it hard for eateries to acquire the certificate. It is a legitimate body that upholds the true and real principals of Islam. How do you know that the chicken and meat is slaughtered the Islamic way? What about the sauces and ingredients use? When serving food to Muslims everything has to be taken into consideration holistically. Just by having Malay waiters and seeing Malay customers eating at a restaurant is not justified at all.

This is not "examplary". "Examplary" in the context of the land shd mean something internalised by non malays since a long time ago, specifically since merdeka, when the non malays on their own had sought to learn n understand n adopt the ways of the land; meaning in their own consciousness their outlets wld be of the expected norms of the malays, i.e. free of non halal matters, without at all having to put up a label "no pork, no lard". That is the meaning of (natural) integration i.e. integrating with the society of the land.

I have a question for you What if NO PORK, NO LARD but have ALCOHOL in food?

  • @GreenPartyofMalaysia

    @GreenPartyofMalaysia

    7 ай бұрын

Some Japanese restaurants use mirin (rice wine or other grain wine) in the preparation of sushi and sashimi. These are raw fish dishes - the alcohol helps to sterilise the fish flesh by killing germs. The alcohol content is insufficient to memamukkan or menghayalkan. The reason why some Japanese rrstaurants do not have a halal cerificate is because of this and also because they serve sake or Suntory whiskey and othef alcoholic drinks. A common misunderstanding among Muslims that is would ne useful to clarify here is about red wind vinegar, white wind vinegar and apple cider vinegar. They avoid these products bevause of wine and cider in thd name. Now to understand this, you need to have an appreciation of elementary biochemistry. ALL VINEGARS are made through a double fermentation process. In the first fermentation process, a starch (rice, wheat, barley, grapes) is fermented to break down (the technical term is ‘reduce’) the complex carbohydrates to simple sugars such as glucose (mostly) but also some fructose. Often, not all the starches (mostly polysaccharides) are broken down in monosaccharides but some disaccharides and oligosaccharides are also produces - this produces the unique taste profile of the end product. The glucose (mostly) is then fermented into ethanol, an alcohol with yeast. At this stage, alcoholic drinks such as mirin, rice wine, sake, whiskey, brandy, cider, beer and etc are produced, depending on what raw material you use to begin with. To make vinegar, a second round of fermentation is carried out where the ethanol is fermented and turns to acetic acid. Vinegar sold commercially usually is a 6-8% acetic acid solution with some unfermented sugars and maybe trace amounts of ethanol. You can also see this in aged tualang honey shere some of the glucose and fructose is turned into ethanol, not much less than 2% but enough to alter the taste profile. The amount of ethanol in commercial vinegars is very little, measured in parts per million (ppm), certainly not enough to inebriate you. The ‘wine’ in the terms red wine vinegar, white wine vinegar or rice wine vinegar is simply to denote the source raw material to make the respective vinegars. It won’t become vinegar until most of the ethanol is converted to acetic acid.

Allow me to correct you, bro. They may not serve pork or lard but that does not make it a certainty that their restaurant serve halal food. As a muslim yourself, you should know there are other criteria to ensure that the food one serve is halal or otherwise. For example- are the meat served slaughtered according to islamic rites, or the ingredients that they use - are they halal ? Pls refer to the religious authorities if u wish to influence people buying from non-halal certified restaurants. I've nothing against a non muslim establishment but we, as muslims must ensure about the "halalness" of what we consume.

As Muslim i still prefer to go to restaurant with Halal Certification by Jakim. Halal is not only about No Pork No Lard , what about other ingredients like the sauce or paste use in the cooking is the ingredients halal, if alcohol is added, and cleanliness, is the eggs washed before cooking and are there cooks Muslim at the kitchen . This video is Political , they just want to hantam Jakim a Muslim govt agency. As Muslim we support Jakim effort. A lot of non Muslim enterprises in the food industries always cheat like the kicap manufacturers. As Muslim we should not patronise this type of Restoren. There are lot of Halal and Indian Muslim business you can go.
