My dad liberated France in WWII. Not by himself :), he had help. When I was a babe, he would put me on his knee and play and sing Lily Marlene, to me with his harmonica. He has two sets of lyrics.

+mechmusicman Nice to hear. Lily Marlene is origin al a German song, but taken over by the allies, as a liberation song. The Germans didn't like that. In 2018 there is another Festival in Dijon, come over to see it.

'Rossignol, rossignol de mes amours' sang by Luis Mariano. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6yo0qOdkcu2l7w.html This tune is issued from an operetta 'Le chanteur de Mexico' premiered in 1951 and was a success right into the 1970s. Back then, everybody was singing, children, adolescents and adults alike would just sing a song. Luis Mariano was the Voice of those days. Those singing in the crowd would have been those children.
