zou het niet zo zijn dat al deze mensen naar deze zangavond komen om juist in dit tempo te genieten van het psalmzingen wat elders bijna niet meer mogelijk is, ga zo door andre

Oef, wat is dit PRACHTIG! Een eeuwen oude zang traditie in de lage landen komt hier op een voor mij geweldig inspirerende manier tot uitdrukking; geweldig bedankt voor deze fantastische registratie!

So young and yet so talented.God Bless you. I agree , Dutch organs have their own sound, which I love, but the Mixtuurs tend to scream and the wind pressure varies wildly sometimes. I love their rounded 16' Pedal reeds, not at all like a German Posaune or French Bombarde, which makes the sound interesting. Dutch organ Flutes are the best. As for those repeated chords at the end of phrases, perhaps you could alter the style just a bit, it gets old. Their's often more than one solution to a situation. Young man, I shake your hand.

Ik wist niet dat de Grote Kerk van Gorinchem en de St Maartenskerk in Zaltbommel dezelfde speeltafels hebben.

Heb deze bewerking en zang nog niet zo heel lang geleden ontdekt. Wat ongelooflijk mooi! Ik kom volgende week naar Zaltbommel. Zal je beetje aan de 2e stemmers denken die paar versjes die we daar mee mogen zingen.? 😜😜. Succes alvast!

This is beautiful~ But how on earth do the people know when to start singing? This would never work in America, people are way to impatient to wait on a long intro like that... I love it when the people start singing, it's like they are another stop on the organ! Lovely.

They know because lots of organists round here are playing a single note (the first note of the hymn) alone when singing have to begin, and than the organist plays normal again. Listen at 4:35

***** I never said anything about trained or untrained. Yes the music could be played but most Americans are too impatient to enjoy such a long intro. ( I personally would love it). I'm the organist at our church and I use to play thru the whole hymn as an intro, but the preacher said it took up too much time and asked me to just play the last line of the hymn as intro. People are too nervous, jittery and busy here in the states, they need to relax.

Dankuwel. Rechts staat de spiegel waardoor ik de mensen beneden kan zien zitten. Helaas staat daar ook net de camera, waardoor het lijkt alsof ik heel de tijd naar de camera kijk. Maar dat is niet zo;)

Heel mooi ! Wat ik me alleen afvraag is, wat daar rechts nou voor interessants te zien is !? ;-)

Hier wordt deze opname elke week wel een keer geluisterd ;) En dat zorgt ervoor dat we naar 11 mei uit kijken! Tot die tijd genieten van je opnames.

Kip-pe-vel! ( of was het kippenvel?) ik zet 11-5 in mijn agenda. Als het lukt; tot dan! Ik heb er zin in

niet te snel niet te langzaam tempus fugit in de hemel is t eeuwig Zingen

het draagt wel degelijk bij, het ligt eraan op welke manier en hoevaak je het doet. Willem Hendrik Zwart kon dit bijvoorbeeld gecontroleerd doen en met de juiste mate. Maar je moet bij het 'spelen met de wind' al snel oppassen dat je het niet te vaak doet, want dan gaat het vervelen - zonder hierbij overigens iets af te doen van de improvisatiekunsten van Andre, want die zijn geweldig!

Voor mij draagt dat wel bij aan de muziek anders zou ik het niet doen;) Voor de rest sluit ik me aan bij Matthias :)

I guess this is good. The Netherlands are unique. The style of organ playing is very odd to me and the singing seems to drag and there is no rhythm and the tune seems to wander all over the place. What is the idea of the trembling notes at the end? I have seen this often but only in the Netherlands, is it because these organs tend to scream and vary with wind pressure? I mean these comments in a nice way :-)

goodchappy Nobody sings hymns as well as the Dutch. The hymn has a rhythm, and a tune which is well known and does not wander anywhere. Often the pace is slower than the U.S. is used to, in part to give adequate time for the congregation to be in full voice. Note that many (most?) U.S. congregations do not sing loudly as the Dutch do. Improvisation is a fundamental characteristic of Dutch hymn playing, whether in church or in an organ concert, hence the lengthy introduction, interlude, and ending. As for the "trembling" notes (which are not confined to the end, here or in other performances), this is a Dutch tracker -- you can look up on the web about the mechanics and why the keys are struck that way in some circumstances.

I would tend to disagree that the Dutch are the best at Hymn singing. The Welsh are well known for the hymn singing and harmonising. I am in the UK and generally due to dwindling congregations, unless in a cathedral or well attended church, singing is pretty poor. I have tried to look for an explanation about repetitive chord playing by dutch organists, but an answer is escaping me so far, not sure what terms to google. I can see and appreciate it occasionally but there seems, particularly with this performer (Andre) an over use of it in my opinion. However in case my opinion is taken the wrong way, Andre is an extremely talented organist and I am envious of it.

goodchappy I can't argue with you about Welsh hymn singing because I have never heard any--is there something on YT that you recommend? I love good hymn singing, I've heard many wonderful Dutch recordings, I'd like to add Welsh recordings if they are good as you say. If you watch Dutch organists playing hymns (usually improvised, which is the primary Dutch organist style) on YT you will see many organists doing as Andre does on trackers.

Of course everything is down to personal taste but I like to hear hymns sung in harmony with organ accompaniment. Dutch hymn singing seems to be led by the organist but I hear little or no harmony in the singing. I have watched a lot of Dutch organists on KZread, there is a general theme between many of them, I love listening to them but then I wonder if it is a little bit self indulgent on their part and after a while rather boring. Very often I can predict how an organist is going to progress through chords and how they will end a piece of music. I don't mean that it is bad and most of them play far better than I can. I just wonder where the style originated as it seems unique to the Dutch. If I could find the words to describe what I really mean it would help. Sorry if you are left wondering what I am talking about. :-)

goodchappy I agree that Dutch hymn singing that I've heard had little or no harmony. But everything I've heard has been congregations, and I cannot think of a single congregation of any denomination in any country that sung with much if any harmony. (The Hymn Sings at AGO national conventions, accompanied by world famous organists who harmonize and improvise on magnificent organs in magnificent churches packed full of church organists who sing in parts and with descants, is the #1 hymn singing experience of my life.) We will have to agree to disagree about the Dutch organists' central musical tradition of improvising on hymn tunes, both in services and (much more elaborately) in concerts. IMHO there is nothing self-indulgent about improvisation, even on hymns. As always, some Dutch organists and improvisations -- both in church services and in concerts -- are better than others. I have about 40 CDs and DVDs of Dutch organ concerts, and the majority of works are hymn improvisations plus a small minority of standard organ repertoire. Some of the Dutch concert hymn improvisations are among my most favorite organ works (I have about 30,000 organ tracks). Others span the spectrum all the way to boring--but that is inevitably true of all organ works, particularly improvisations, in any genre, country, etc. You are right, Dutch hymn improvisations, whether the tiny ones in services or the long concert ones, have a distinct structure. So do most musical genres throughout history. I have no end of organ improvisation recordings that purposely reject any structure, for better or for worse. I have a BA in music but in our history of music courses we never once did more than briefly pass over Dutch organ history, I wish I knew more. I bet I can find at least one book about that--but it will be in Dutch! I have been to many services in some of the most famous cathedrals of the world (especially Paris and Germany), played by some of the most famous living organists (Roth, Latry, etc.). While often the organ hymn improvisations and harmonizations are stunning, as a rule they are shorter and less frequent than in the best of the Dutch churches. Of course the Dutch churches are Protestant and the French ones are Catholic. And the French organists have decades of tradition improvising (and of course composing) in a much more contemporary style than Dutch or almost anywhere else (think Messiaen, Vierne, Dupre, et al.). These French ones are my favorite as regards nationality and style. I have heard some fabulous organ hymn accompaniments in famous U.S. churches by famous organists, and there are also recordings of terrific concert organ hymn improvisations. In none of the above have I heard congregational singing that is even as hearty (loud) as I hear in most (not all) Dutch churches, much less in harmony. BTW, have you listened to enough Dutch organs to detect that most have a unique sound--perhaps some voices that are not found in other nationality organs? There are exceptions, but I don't know if those just are not using certain Dutch-specific voices, or if they don't have those voices. For example, the van Heuval organ in St. Eustache doesn't ever sound Dutch, and Guillou went wild specifying the most number of mixtures I have ever seen in an organ, even given it is in France. I can usually tell an organ is Dutch in the first couple seconds at most. Highly experienced organists are good at recognizing from their sound certain organ builders or at least their styles--American classic (A-S, etc.), British, North German (Silbermann especially), etc. I am not very good doing that, I can get some American Classic ones sometimes, and some North German ones, and some Cavaille-Colls.

Maar hoe meer mensen er zitten in zo'n grote kerk, hoe makkelijker dat te verwezenlijken is. Dus ik zou zeggen ; Kom ook 11 mei daar naartoe want hoe meer zielen hoe meer vreugd!
