Organizing LF Film Holders - Large Format Friday

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today's LFF is the first of a multi-part series on getting organized in large format photography. In addition to taking good notes, another way we can track our film from unexposed to developed is by adding a notch code to our film holders. The process was easier than I'd expected, and you can check it out in detail throughout this video.

For me the hardest part is managing the exposed sheets as they all get put in the same box and my solution solves both problems... I keep each of my film holders in a zip-lock bag together with 2 re-printed template sheets onto which I write the holder number, film stock, lens, aperture and exposure time and any notes such as filters. When I unload the film I put it in the EXPOSED box adding it to the top of the pile, the sheet of paper gets added to a similar pile which is held to the box with a good old rubber-band. This means that the sheets in the box is in the same order as the notes out of the box and I can review these any time so long as I don't mess with their order. When it comes time to develop, I decide what I want to develop, all sheets of FP-4 for example, and develop them. After they're developed I write the development details on the reverse side of the paper and then file the developed negative with the corresponding piece of paper. Everything is in sync and I have a full record for all sheets, developed or waiting for developing. No notches needed but I had thought about it.

Richard it seems like you've got your system down, I'm envious! Your box + notes system looks solid, but knowing myself I would definitely screw up the notes part.

interesting idea, please show the how the notches look when exposed on the film in a later episode. Up to now, I have been slightly rounding a corner on the film when I load it into my tank. both my Stearman for the 4x5 and the Patterson insert for the 5x7 only hold four sheets , so noting which corner for which holder lets me keep track. So as long as I have the holders in order before I remove the sheets to get ready for processing, I know which sheet is from which holder - i planned to do the 8x10 one sheet at a time in one of the Stearman 8x10 tanks- a few years ago I purchased a Speed Graflex in a big case that came with a lot of 4x5 holders they all had a very little celluloid tab in them which a had a number that matched the holder and left that the number in the corner of the exposed film - they were quite brittle by then and all broke off in use. I have never seen them available

Thanks Rick, you will be seeing the results as we head through the process start to finish. The marks won't be as prominent as if both parts of the flap are notched, but will also cut down on the potential for leaks. In researching this episode I came across similar plastic and metal cut-outs that were used but had a hard time finding images of the result on the film.

Morse code would be the easiest for me (using letters instead of numbers, since letters have fewer dots and dashes than numbers.) A "V" for dashes and a notch for dots. A=._ B=_... C=_._. D=_.. etc. all the way to Z, and not many of us would run out of letters before we run out of film holders! Works well if one knows the Morse code.

I notch mine with something kinda like roman numerals, except with the equivalent of IIII instead of IV because I don't want to look that closely for file shape to tell the difference between IV and VI. I also notched through both sides of the flap, not just the inside. I've never had a light leak problem so far, though I didn't go all the way to the bottom. I also still load my film normally; I find the optical notches are usually pretty easily distinguished from the physical film code notches, and it's helpful to know by feel that it's loaded correctly. The binary system is good, I wish I'd seen that earlier. One tip I can suggest for keeping exposed film separate from unexposed: bring one plastic bag per box, and just put the exposed film in the bag as you load the new stuff in. This is especially handy when traveling.

You can also use a binary system with a different base that makes it much easier to use. I have a small steel ruler in which I cut notches that I plan to use as a benchmark. The notches are 1-2-4-8-16 and a reference. You just add the notches to get the number of the back (up to 32 backs). Which reminds me, I still have a ton of double darkslides to notch 🙄

I have been cleaning gear with IPA due to the pandemic and was surprised that it was taking off markings as well as cleaning. I only need to know if a holder is empty, filled and unexposed, or filled an exposed.
