I had have been able to prevent ear worm damage by placing a drop of vegetable oil on the silks where they emerge from the shucks as soon as the ends of the silks begin to turn brown. The corn has been fertilized already. The baby ear worms will not survive crawling through the oil.

My husband and I have really been learning a lot from your videos lately. As new-ish gardeners in North Texas of 3 years, this is our first time to grow corn. We planted Golden Bantam and we are looking forward to tasting it for the first time. Thank you so much for teaching us how to grow corn!

I just planted my second crop of corn a few days ago. I am trying your double row method. First crop is tasseling now. Corn has become my personal favorite thing to grow.

Yum I can almost taste the fresh off the stalk sweet corn 🌽. My momma cooked it in a wood burning stove oven by the gallons as we were a very large family and oh how good it was. Way back then there was no augmented versions but it was the best corn I ever had. I think the wood stove had a lot to do with the flavor.

Your corn is looking good. I use spinosad on everything but I also usually alternate some neem or horticultural oil also. I will also start using some bt on my tomatoes. My corn silks are drying out well, pulled an ear and ate it today, but it still need a couple of days to fill out the kernels at the top of the ear a little more.

Planted Incredible last year, thought it too sweet. Got some pretty looking G90 on drip tape this year. Someone gave me some "Indian Corn" been in his family 60 years. Previously came from a family on the Reservation near me. Appears to be a dent corn and it is multi colored. Already chin high as I planted it in late February down here in South Alabama. I also started a land race field corn this year. 12 varieties, 10 of them dent corn. Last year I sprayed once right before tassel formation with bt and had just a little worm damage. Probably should have hit it again two or three weeks later.

Not growing any corn Travis but appreciate the information . I'd like to grow sweet corn because I do love it cooked in a cast iron pan in the oven with a half stick of butter in it, but I'm very very limited on gardening space.

Alot this Saturday we had too much on Tuesday flood watch till 8pm here in Thomasville GA feels like south Georgia is like Seattle.

Mine has tassels in SC but I started with plants.

I lost a lot of corn to earworms last year this year I’ll be doing the same thing you’re doing.

I had a little worm damage on my corn and decided to wait a few days to spray and I think with 2 days the worm population exploded and caused 5x the damage on my corn. I’ve sprayed Spinosad twice in one week to knock them back

I succession plant sweet corn from late Sep/early Oct, seeding every 3 weeks and harvesting until May in the UAE. Controlling earworms is crucial as we share most corn with friends. The best method is using a net house, but it's costly and space-limited. For outside plots, I use Spinosad, neem, and clove oils, rotating them for 80% effectiveness. If the situation gets out of control, occasionally, I use a stronger non-organic product, respecting the pre-harvest interval.

Not growing corn this year, don't like feeding the raccoons from my hard work.

I spray and dang if it dont.rain over night..got back problems so it.difficult..mine are 8 foot tall and tassling 15 days early!! Idk..weirdest year ever. My tomatoes didnt set hardly any tomatoes...last year during massive heat and drought they set so much i gave all my neighbors bags of them

I just hit my garden with that good ol triple 20 after that hard rain.

I generally don't get a lot of worm pressure on the first harvest of corn, usually the later fall harvest I have to battle them

A goal here in upstate SC is to have sweet corn and tomatoes by July 4th. If you plant midseason corn varieties the first 10 days of April you generally get corn for the 4th. Spinosad is an excellent insecticide. It is partially systemic and penetrates the leaf by 24 hours. Rain won't wash it off. I used to use it a lot but the cost is too high compared to the insecticides I use on my fruit trees. Spinetoram(Radiant) is similar to spinosad but is considered synthetic and not organic. It lasts longer and is effective than spinosad. One third teaspoon per gallon is the maximum rate. It also controls slugs and snails though it's not on the label. I had neither slugs or worms on my cabbage this year with just two sprays. I only spray my sweet corn twice with the spray directed on the upper ear and silks. They're usually worm free.

Spinosad is not systemic, nor is it super effective on corn worms. Pyrethrins are effective and non systemic. One of the fungicides I use is a strong systemic its made from mushrooms so its organic but the strongest fungicide ever will kill garlic rust dead in 1 day even if its super developed.

@@pilsplease7561 Spinosad has translaminar movement, especially with a surfactant. That means it will move from one side of the leaf to the other. It's demonstrated fully systemic movement when drenched on tomato roots in rockwool. In that study it controlled spider mites. As far as efficacy ratings for corn earworms on sweet corn, the University of Tennessee found pyrethrins ranked just above Sevin because many earworms have gained resistance to them from overuse. Pyrethrins also cause spider mites to increase because it kills their natural enemies. None of the pyrethrins are rated higher than 6. Spinosad is rated 7. Chlorantraniprole is rated highest with a 9. I use it on my fruit trees but it's too expensive for corn. The fungicide you're talking about is a strobulin, probably azoxystrobin which isn't organic. According to a 1999 article in Science Direct: "Azoxystrobin is a new fungicide with a novel biochemical mode of action. Its synthesis was inspired by a group of natural products, the strobilurins, which are produced by several species of Basidiomycete fungi, which grow on decaying wood." It's a synthetic. However, it no longer controls many disease because of overuse of the same fungicide repetively. Strobulins target one specific function of a pathogen. It can actually increase some diseases because it kills the weak strains of the pathogen while the strong survive. You can eventually wind up with an unstoppable disease. You have to rotate, or tank mix with another fungicide class with different mode of action for diseases like powdery and downy mildew, gummy stem blight, botrytis, and others. I use it on small fruit plantings and sometimes in furrow at planting. Pyraclostrobin, a relative of azoxystrobin, often causes yield increases in some crops even when there is no disease present. Spinosad drenches increased the height of tomato plants compared to an untreated control group, in one study, with no pests present. In furrow at planting, or seed treatments of the neo-nicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam increases yields without any pests present.

Planted corn first time. Im in N. Central Florida, so our planting dates are the same as S. GA. I planted March 1st, harvest last of corn yesterday. I followed a lot of your recommendations and had good success. Had about 500 planted. I used BT had just a little damage to corn. I only sprayed the silks, not the entire plant. You do have to spray every 5 to 7 days as soon as you see silks forming. Those worms appear very quick, so you have to monitor closely. Planted my beans next to the corn to Trellis a month later, so now I have been to harvest later.

What is Hillingdon corn

Is this what has chewed my leaves and left a tan waste in the middle of the plant? Or is that grasshoppers or beetles?

Here in Ocala Florida my sweet corn pest is Japanese beetles. I pulled an ear yesterday and dropped in a bucket of water and 22 of them buggers came off. Spinosad has had little effect. Anybody have any suggestions?

Yeah spinosad or any other organic pesticide is probably not going to phase adult beetles. Not sure what to use since we don't have Japanese beetle issues here.

We're surrounded by a bunch of big cotton and peanut fields, so too much wide open space between those fields and our garden. But yes, we do have lots of deer in south GA.

Have you ever had rodent pressure on your corn? I gave up growing corn because the rats would eat it all as soon as it got about a week from prime picking. I have tried everything to get rid of the rodents but they are smart and have been a very problematic opponent to combat. I have given up on corn this year but if I can find a solution I might try again... I had beautiful corn last year, full pollination and huge ears, but once they were acout a week or two from picking at optimum ripeness the rats and other rodents ate them all, a while plot of hilled bunched if 5 plants each hill. Probably ate about 40 plants worth of ears I. The matter of a couple nights. Weird though the rodent don't touch any other plants/ fruit on my property.

I grow sweetcorn for my neighbors and popcorn for me . I can’t stand sweet corn . We ate field corn when I was a kid living on a farm perhaps this is the reason I don’t like sweet corn . BT works for me .
