    We use the 'slug hunt method'. This involves simply going out after darkness with a head light on and picking them up and putting them in a suitable receptacle (a jar with as lid). Night by night the number you find goes down. Using a decoy area of rotting foliage attracts the slugs and concentrates them in one area making hunting even more efficient - but watch out for the rouges who go elsewhere!

    I have tried egg shells and coffee but neither worked for me. Then I discovered garlic spray and it's fantastic. Simply bring approximately 10 roughly chopped garlic cloves to a boil and then simmer for 10 mins. Leave to cool over night and make sure to put a lid or top over the pan or pot you use otherwise the smell the next morning . Next morning filter out the garlic and put in spray bottle and there you have it . And finally ONLY spray last thing before going to bed otherwise the smell is really bad. But when you go into the garden the next day the smell is gone.

    hi from New Zealand, just loved seeing a young dude giving great ideas , and showing how to, snails and slugs can decimate your garden over night, or knowing a slimey slug has slimed on your spinach before you pick it is such a put off. So diy slug control is a gardeners most important knowledge. So cheers and high five to you. in these strange times it is a must to have at least a couple of veges going .it is so rewarding to pick your own fruit and veges. knowing for sure they are chemical free.

    I had a slug problem. One day I just randomly hung up a wild bird feeder kept it full, the little birds flocked to my yard for molasses soaked sunflower seeds, (their fav) while in the yard they would forge for bugs, grubs & slug eggs in my garden, as long as there is food in the bird feeder I have no slugs. It's just that easy your all welcome..

    lucky for you. I hung bird feeder in the middle of my garden. The birds ate all the seeds and sprung many on the ground. May be they have too much food. I got plenty of bugs, grasshoppers, and snails in my garden, don't see birds eat them. I saw them they bath on the bird bath during the hot days. I pick a full Walmart bag of snails and gave it to my neighbor who has 20 hens. I was hopping the chicken will eat them. Turns out, the hens eat a few, but left the rest of the snails crawling all over the patios. The neighbor has to sweep them into a bag and threw into the trash can. 😒

    If you’re making your own garlic and chilli spray, it’s ESSENTIAL than you filter it through some cheesecloth or similar BEFORE adding it to your spray-bottle, as any ‘bits’ will block your spray-head and it’ll be ruined forever. 😬👍

    I’ve tried egg shells, diatomaceous earth, tobacco, wood ash, used coffee grounds, and unused coffee grounds, and the slugs crawled through them, seemingly without discomfort. Unused coffee grounds are considerably higher in caffeine than used, which contain 4 to 8 milligrams. I saw more success of these barriers with small snails (some turned back) but the larger slugs were unfazed. For plants in containers, I tried applying Vaseline to the sides of the containers but found slugs crawling through the Vaseline. Supposedly, they won’t cross a barrier of Vaseline.

  • @JacobsBackyardGardening

    @JacobsBackyardGardening

    Yeah unused coffee grounds definitely have a higher caffeine content, but would be an expensive method and is why used grounds are common as it is recycling a waste product. Haven't heard of using vaseline for snails, but I've used it before as an ant barrier. Cheers & have a good one

    I like the coffee mixture and the spray bottle use as I have raised beds and I also see snails climbing neighbours walls on my side and I regularly see them coming into my shed. I would like to make a big quantity and spray everywhere and around my shed thank you so much. I will try the instant coffee mix in old pots and leave to cool overnight and put in a 5ltr strayer and spray everywhere. Great tips

    Mix up a little baking soda, water and a few drops of dawn into a spray bottle. Great friendly repellent for snails, miners, ampids, and other nasty crawlers. It repels them from your plant rather than cruelly killing them. Causes no harm to plants or to your outside critters.. They'll go in hunt of something baking soda free.

    Hey there good job with loving the garden! FYI though snails need calcium to maintain shells so eggshells will just give them a treat before they eat...coffee grounds should be only used on acid loving plants or you will unbalance the natural ph. Keep up the good work!

  • @JacobsBackyardGardening

    Thanks Lenore! Although calcium is very insoluble so it would be hard for the snails to absorb it from the egg shells, also they just really don't like crawling over them cos they're so pointy. Also used coffee grounds don't affect the pH much at all, I used to think that as well but its actually a myth! They are acidic, not only around 6.5 I think. Cheers & have a good one!

    Some great ideas. I'm not sure if the copper is producing an electric charge. Invertebrates have a biology that makes them absorb copper a high rate because it is normally rare in their environment. As a result exposure to raw copper causes toxicity. Owners of salt water tanks are very familiar with this. Note this toxicity applies to earthworms as well. .
