50 doesn't sound that much, tho remember, each Inquisitor may very well have massive armies of analysts working for them. So in the end, it's very possible that they can somehow somewhat monitor most of the chapters that are operating in the core Imperial territory.

The Ordo Machinus is doubly irrelevant considering that the Admech has its own secret police organs. Altho, you could argue that the Inquisition don't trust them.. You know, the irony is that most of the technological stopgaps made to slow or stop developpment of new tehchnologies isn't imposed by the Inquisition or the Imperium, but by the Admech itself, so maybe the Ordo Machinus has stakes in trying to.. make things budge in that direction.

It actually probably answered a lot of questions about why the geneseed tithes and amount of chapters never matched up. I was playing with getting some budgeting algorithms set up on excel and just for fun I plugged some numbers in for geneseed, had to make up some areas like figuring what the average turnover rate for Space Marines was (figured about 10-20 lost on average every decade) and even factoring in a 30% attrition rate for mutated or damaged geneseed you should still have enough banked from the tithes (figured 10% of a chapters geneseed stocks) to build around 17,000 chapters with a substantial reserve maintained. Yes I know the real answer is Scifi writers can't do math, but it is still fascinating that they have such a massive discrepancy. There isn't really much reason to bank giant piles of geneseed aside from as a reserve for the forces or to build new chapters, they're only use is to build space marines.

The Ordo Astartes is so small because "accidents" have an unfortunate way of happening to Inquisitors who get too curious about things the Space Marines would rather they left alone. In general the older and more powerful the Chapter, the more accidents happen.

I could imagine that pretty much all inquisitors within the ordo astartes are very senior inquisitors for two simple reasons. First, the ordo probably prefers to only recruit senior inquisitors because junior inquisitors tend to be, let's say, rather enthusiastic and a bit lacking in the diplomacy department. And those are probably suboptimal traits when your job is to police spacemarines. The second reason being that, due to aforementioned traits, junior inquisitors within the ordo astartes probably tend to have remarkably short lifespans leaving only the senior inquisitors to run the ordo.

I'd love to see how a depiction of a conversation between two centuries-millennium old Lord Inquisitors from this Ordo would go. The swaths of deep secrets they would know like the back of their hands would be enlightening. This Ordo is such a cool concept, just the incomparable weight of entire sectors fates depending on your verdicts. Bet they All 50 an members must be veterans of thousands of battles, each an expert on dozens-hundreds of Chapters to the smallest minute/quirk, groomed from nigh birth to fill the position. I have to imagine all 50 are in the top 100 most dangerous men in the galaxy and for good reasons. An Organization in their position could topple the Imperium through mere negligence. When you can treat the most ancient and dark secrets of hundreds of thousands-millions of Astartes as off the cuff knowledge, information that even the top of the Big 3 Ordos or Administratum may be ignorant of is a frightening thought. This is an organization that could unironically ignite galaxy wide inter chapter war with mere sentences. They probably treat setting shaking secrets like "a close estimate for the current size of The Black Templar Legion." The "Unforgiven Chapters currently hunting a confirmed member of The Fallen." and "Detailed list of Chapters known to be descendants of a Traitor Legion." As basic knowledge of the position. Hell damn good chance the reason why notorious problem children like The Marines Malevolent, Black Dragons, Blood Angels, Flesh Tearers, Iron Skulls, etc etc are even still around is because someone up top likes em. The potential for story telling opportunities with their faction are limitless yet GW has done nothing with them. Its absurd.

Hey Arch, thinking back on the resettlement of Armageddon, is there enough lore to do a logistics video on how the Imperium initially settles (or resettles) a world? How much attention/investment does a world get from the Imperium before the settlement process is 'finished'? Who is in charge of the process? Does the Imperium install a feudal system with noble families if a native government does not exist? Do they just dump a bunch of humans on the surface and come back demanding tithes? I know Pyran was settled by imperial guard forces. Are colonist recruited, or just shipped to the new world and told to build? Are worlds only settled at the discretion of the Administratum? Or can the Ecclesiarchy, Adeptus Mechanicus, or neighboring worlds settle a world and claim ownership? (The Severan Dominate was started by a rouge trader house and settled and claimed multiple worlds)

Every time I hear Arch talk about His Most Holy Inquisition, I’m reminded of Vee saying, “eh, it was probably heretical.”

I like that they keep this Ordo around because it helps keeps up the idea that Space Marines are not perfect and above all, they can still choose to go traitor, slowly feeding some new recruits to the Chaos Space Marines. It helps slightly offset the lore hole regarding how Chaos Marines seem to "die" in huge numbers and never really seem to run low despite it. It is one of those rare times that GW keeps a door open on lore to keep things almost reasonable.

Wait an official 40k supplier is sponsoring Arch? I thought they'd declared him persona non grata? What dark dealings have you committed Arch?

Of all the never ending, thankless tasks in the imperium. I really feel for the poor ordo trainee who has to document the Blood Ravens reliquary. Especially since his dataslates, rosarius, space ship and on occasion underwear, keep disappearing.

Imagine if the Ordo Astartes had their own formation of Space Marines; maybe not necessarily an entire successor chapter, but perhaps a force of Blacksheilds that have turned away from their traitorous chapters, creating a sort of mosaic of different genetic lineages (like the Knights Errant). These marines would have good insight into how a chapter may become corrupted; though they would probably never reach 1000 marine strength, they would have the doctrine of fast attacking a renegade chapter's command and control to paralyze and subdue.

Hey Arch, I just wanted to make a suggestion that you should try to make a series about Warhammer Fantasy's vampire bloodlines. I know you've mentioned them here and there, but I just thought that you'd do a good job at explaining them with some kind of in depth videos on each bloodline and what makes them different and all that.

You should do a video on how ratlings can reproduce so fast. I really want to know how they were basically wiped out and then were back in full force a generation later. And why they don't start overpopulating there world and the Imperium at large. It's a true mystery.

There is a first class of semester in the college of ordo astartes where each time the professor walks into the class, walks to his podium in silence, leaves his notes there, walks back to the board with no words and draws a vertical line in the middle, moving on to add two instances of the number 1,000,000 on each side, then turns and says, all right inquisitorial wannabes, this will be your first lesson, and I wish you to keep this one on top of your mind until the moment when your last breath leaves you in the service of our holy god emperor... he returns to the board and to the left he adds, the emperium of man has OVER 1,000,000 settled worlds under its banner... then goes to the right and adds, there are 1000 chapters of Astartes serving the emperor's will each 1000 brothers strong (on paper)... then he faces the class again to continue... they are hardly ever in full numbers, so there are less than one of these angles of death, these instruments of emperor's wrath available to us for protection of each planet, in the future, IF, you prove yourself worthy of his holy trust, you will be given the power to pass judgment on chapters of Astartes whole in his name, praise be the emperor, remember then, the choice to put them to the sword is more significant and consequential than putting 1000 worlds to the punishment of exterminatus or even more so sever, in more than often cases... this, will be your first lesson to learn in the ranks of ordo Astartes of his holy inquisition... class dismissed...

Custodians don't have gene-seed, they are specialty crafted on an individual level with the emperors DNA. Look at it like this, gene-seed is for mass production, whereas the custodians are custom ordered every time a new one is needed.

On the other hand if the fight starts 500 meters apart with no prior warning for either of them, the custodian is going to bum rush the gray knight so fast it won't even be much of a fight at all. :P

Kinda like when an inquisitor didn't know space marines perform cannibalistic rituals on the regular and, while attempting to persecute them, created the Sons of Malice traitor chapter.

I usually check the sponsors but considering that even a 1% of the money might end in GW hands makes me a little hesitant on this one ...

From a reader point inquisitors are evil guis but from hightside they do what need to be done and do their best to fix already broken things.

It be awesome if there was a chapter of space marine inquisitors. Its funny how the Grey Knights operate as quasi inquisitors investigating suspected demonic heresy.

I would love nothing more than to see the absolute distruction of the inquisition by the Templars or evnen the Lion himself.

I think for the vast majority of inquisitors investigating chapters, they are granted a measure of leniency and look the other way, as long as there is no active provocation against the inquisition. Space marines are a requirement for the Imperium to get along, as important as the Navy, the Guard and the Mechanicus. They need very few marines to cover very large distances and even in times of relative peace, their anti piracy operations alone justify their existence. I think the Inquisition knows things about chapters, maybe their secrets, maybe they know enough to know they have something to hide. The Blood Angels for example are well documented to have a thirst for blood that goes overboard. This is documented and a matter of restricted record that the IXth legion 'Revenant', were in fact abnormally blood thirsty and hard to control for even legion officers in combat. This legacy lives on through the many chapters of the blood excommunicated for similar practices. The Inquisition KNOWS something is wrong, although they might not know it's called the red thirst. That on its own is enough to see them excommunicated as a bloodline. But they see most chapters are capable of directing it and controlling it for the most part, so they don't bother those of the blood too much. I don't think they even want to look for reasons to alienate chapters and the inquisitors to who do alienate chapters and push their own agendas or harder agendas never see promotion. Like the Maelstrom Warders should have never had a war with the Imperium, but it happened because there was likely a single Inquisitor with a grudge who threw their weight around. Marines need to be policed, they are primarily warriors, they are exposed to chaos and to the BS that is Imperial bureaucracy. But at the end of the day every marine starts off as hardcore loyalists to the end and it takes a lot of pushing for marines to turn, prior to the Heresy there was no traitor marines or primarchs, but with the presence of those traitors twisted by chaos, it even goes for them to want to double down. So minor mutations being worked on by apothecaries, cannibal rights, occasionally losing control of some troops, chapters forming into secret legions, chapters recruiting in numbers beyond codex compliance, all of that, in my opinion, has a blind eye turned to it.
