Hello! I’m newly subscribed and I kinda have a question.. I started taking testosterone about a month ago and sing and I’m scared my signing voice, so my question is, will I have to re-learn how to use my voice all over again? Or if I practice enough during my transition it’ll just come naturally?

Hello, hello, hello! First of all, congrats for (almost?) one month on T!!! Yay!!!! That's so exciting for you!! I hope you feel great! Now, I might make a video about this because singing and being on T is a pretty weird and frightening thing. It feels like uncharted territory, and so I totally understand your worry and trepidation. I want to begin by saying that I was really concerned about losing my singing voice when I started taking testosterone, and I DIDN'T take testosterone until much later in my transition because of it. After having a lot of long conversations with my doctor about my concerns (always talk to your doctor!), I ended up taking T at a reduced amount (0.1ml) which I slowly increased - every 3 months or so I would go up 0.1ml. I only arrived at the full dose after I had been on testosterone for almost a year. The reason I did this is because testosterone stretches your larynx, so a lot of folks who take testosterone at the normal rate experience feeling like they have a cold for a number of months after the larynx starts to stretch in earnest. My intent in taking T at a reduced rate was to slow the stretching of the larynx and hopefully avoid any trauma on the vocal chords/folds. I tell you this just so you know where I'm coming from, because I haven't had the experience of taking testosterone at the recommended dose right off the bat and there might be some significant differences, especially in regards to speed with which the changes crop up. That said, all the notable changes still happened to me! So, I've dealt (and am dealing with) sound and placement shifts, and I totally think sustaining your voice on a regular dose of T is very much achievable! It's a matter of working slowly with what you are able to accomplish, and not diving into big belt-y songs or falsetto (harder than you think! 😩) all at once. What I mean by that is do gentle daily warmups (I highly recommend The Instrumental Voice's Concert Warm Up Series on Spotify), find songs that feel comfortable for you, learn to clock when your voice starts to feel tired and don't work it beyond that point. While your larynx is lengthening, putting more pressure on it or working it to the point of feeling sore isn't something you want to mess with, so just keep things gentle and be aware of your body telling you that it's time to take a break. When you start to feel that your voice has settled, then you can start playing with stretching your range, dabbling in falsetto, and figuring out all the new wild and wonderful things your voice can do. If you can find a teacher and have the resources to get one, I also recommend that - though I understand that isn't a possibility for everyone, and also a lot of professional singers/singing teachers do not have experience with folks taking hormones. But they will be able to help out with comfort and finding exercises that work for you. Re-learning is a process, and you will definitely have to relearn some things, but ultimately your voice remains YOUR voice. You'll still have your ear for musicality, your ability to find pitch, and your understanding of what sounds good and what doesn't, what FEELS good and what doesn't. Sometimes, because you know all of these things, the process can be frustrating. I'm currently teaching myself falsetto, and it's taken me almost three months just to sustain a nice sounding note. At the beginning of my vocal changes, I would start to sing along to songs I used to be able to sing along to, and just, like...honk out a completely different note because I was so used to one placement over another. But I'm getting there! It's just a matter of listening to yourself, your body, and being patient but persistent. And having a sense of humour about it! I know that sounds so "rah, rah, positive attitiude is everything!" But, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, if I had let those silly honking moments get to me and hadn't laughed my head off about them, I would be so exhausted all the time. This is a lot of words! I hope I answered your question, but if I didn't and you want further clarification or to chat more, feel free to reply to this message or DM me on Instagram/Twitter. Happy days!

@@oliverjames3835 thank you, this really lifted a weight off my chest! I’m doing the exact same thing by starting with a low dose and increasing it every three months, currently I’m at 0.1ml. It was strongly suggested by my endocrinologist since she hadn’t dealt with high schoolers transitioning very much and didn’t want to impact my normal development by starting with a higher dose. I’m very happy to know that it will help avoid causing trauma to my larynx:D thank you for the tips! Have a great day😁
