Orderville Canyon, Zion National Park - When the Zion Narrows are only a side part of your trip
Orderville Canyon kind of happened as an afterthought. You see, when I was hiking the Grand Canyon with my friend Clint, we decided that we would try to make future plans to visit the Zion Subway. The Zion Subway is a beautiful canyon that is very beginner friendly. You see, Clint has never canyoneered before. So, with some other experienced canyoneers (Nick and Tina), we could safely bring Clint through the Subway on his first canyoneering trip.
The Subway, however, is very popular and permits are hard to get; Zion National Park uses a lottery system and you only get chosen with a lot of luck.
But I won and the trip was on.
Traveling all the way to Zion for a single canyon seemed like a waste of a trip, so the hunt was on for a second hike. That's when I remembered Orderville Canyon. Orderville is another technical canyoneering route, but one that is fairly beginner friendly. People can walk partway up Orderville from the Zion Narrows, but they eventually come to obstacles they can't climb and have to turn around. You can run the canyon from the top down with the appropriate gear, adding a lot to the trip, but not nearly as many people canyoneer as hike. Then there is the philosophy of most canyoneers: do the technical section of the canyon and get back to your car as quickly as possible.
Most canyoneers are there for the technical challenge and don't enjoy hiking at all. And Orderville involves low technical challenge and a lot of hiking. So not being accessible to hikers and being less appealing to canyoneers made it easy to get permits. It also made it perfect for this trip since Tina and I are hikers first and canyoneers second. And Clint had never been canyoneering. Nick, being a canyoneering purist just had to put up with it if he wanted that extra spot to do the Subway.
And Orderville Canyon is amazing. The challenges are just hard enough to keep you on your toes. The dry upper section has deep slot sections. And then the water starts running in the canyon and the fun and beauty really begin. There were a lot of smiling faces on this trip, and I think I said "wow" about 100 times.
Well, for most of it. Eventually we came to spots where we had to swim. For some reason everyone decided that although we were all carrying wetsuits we didn't need to wear them. So by the time we met up with the Zion Narrows, Tina's fingers were white and everyone was a little cold. Luckily I had a large neoprene jacket she could put on easily (it's no fun putting on a full wetsuit when you're already wet) so she was able to manage.
It was a relatively short hike down the narrows to get back to the truck. This section was crowded, but not nearly as much as I've seen in the past. So it was a great bonus to also see the Zion Narrows at the end of the trip.
Then it was back to the car and off to get burgers at this little joint Nick knew about called Buffalo Trails Trading Company in Virgin, UT. Great place, great food, fun owner and amazing desserts.
Finally, we made our way back to camp to get some rest and hit up the Subway the next day.
I absolutely loved Orderville Canyon. Once again, Zion National Park blew my mind.

Heading out there with dudes in their 20's and 30's definitely reminds me how old I'm getting. But that's what Ibuprofen is for. Or beer. I'm not sure which. This was a tough one for Tina. She's been sidelined because of COVID, then health issues, then work. But she went out and put down about 24 miles this weekend like a boss.

Hiked it with my family a few years ago, relatively easy hike till you get to the Narrows where your walking on boulders under the water.

Thanks! Such a fun crew to go out with. I was surprised how un-crowded the Narrows were too. Not sure why. The cyanobacteria doesn't seem to lower the crowds; it just keeps them from drinking the water.

Took some convincing, but I talked her into getting back on rope and doing a couple technical canyons. She loved it. Well, after the pain of the Subway exit and the chill from Orderville wore off.

This is so so cool. I like how video took you down the rabbit hole that just never ended. Normally when you guys hike you do so in the open areas so sense of distance is lost in everything being so vast but here to have walls and walls and walls and walls and walls... it is like baskin gulch hike just narrower and canyoneery. What a cool hike. So great to see Tina getting back on her feet. I hope she continues to improve so you guys can take us on even more cool and great adventures!

Orderville was an afterthought tacked on after winning the lottery for the Subway. But it did not disappoint. It is surreal being down in a canyon that deep, only to end up at the Narrows for the exit. It instantly became one of my favorites. Tina's doing well. This was a tough weekend for her with all the hiking, but she did great and absolutely loved being back out there.

You're welcome. You can always walk up into Orderville from the Narrows. Just turn around when it starts getting too hairy for you. You'll still see some beautiful sections.

Another exciting canyon hike with Tina, Jerryeee & serious dudes. My favorite shot ~ buddy hugging the back of the suv close to the end ~ and then ~ squeezed into the back seat area with loaded bins. So funny. Safety in numbers but as you finished ~ those numbers were adding up. Human beings, that is. What does Tina have to say about that? & I ended up viewing one of Tina's vlogs - after she wrote back to me on a comment. It went back to your wedding in Hawaii... I did not know your history ~ but so fantastic you two have LOVE - and a LOVE for the outdoors. Again - thanks very much for sharing. Your MD fan. - or 1 of many.

I don't like driving anymore. 62 years old and miss 'the good old days' of the 70's & driving all over. My Rav4 is the last vehicle I wish to own. Give me a pedal bike!! Really thank you & Tina for your vlogs of adventure. Who knows ~ maybe one day we will meet on a trail.
I live a few miles from there and haven't explored it. Thanks. Only thing you'd have to be very aware of weather, if it rained heavy you'd be in trouble. Nice hike guys.

1% chance of rain this day and it sprinkled anyway. Luckily, no real accumulation. If you try this one, know that everyone but the most skilled downclimbers will need a rope and harness at a couple spots.

It had a couple short rappels. Nick downclimbed one and I didn't get to film the rest of us rappeling because a group came up behind us and we were rushing. Nick is a great climber; no way I could have down climbed it. I want to say there was one other rappel. The spot where we jumped would also probably be a rappel, but the group behind us passed us there. Their first person down used a hand line/meat anchor and tested the water for depth and rocks. Once that person cleared it, the rest of us were able to jump. Never smart to jump without verifying. If I couldn't have jumped, I would have had to rappel that spot too.
only people of certain size can fit into that little opening.

Hey Jerry, new to the channel love the videos! I'm heading to Zion for the 4th time in late August and would love to do this Orderville Canyon route. I didn't notice any repelling in this video and was curious if you did but didn't show it? Tryin to plan accordingly! Thanks!

Unless you're a very skilled downclimber, Orderville has a couple rappels. I didn't record one because a group came up behind us and we felt rushed. The part where we jumped also would require a downclimb with a hand line or a rappel. The group passed us there and sent one person down with a hand line/meat anchor to check water depth and make sure a jump was safe (you can't see through the water because it's so blue). Once that was confirmed, the rest of us were able to jump. But if you didn't have that luxury, you'd need a rope. Technically, it can be downclimbed without a rope, but Nick was the only one in our group that was skilled enough to do that. (He has tons of rock climbing and canyoneering experience.) If you don't have the gear and experience, I recommend going from the bottom up from the Narrows. Go up Orderville as far as you're comfortable and turn around if it gets too difficult to upclimb. And remember it's easier to climb up than it is to climb down!
Was just really enjoying some photos from a few years back of backpacking from Navajo National Monument out to Keet Seel. Wasn't sure if you guys have done that. I had an amazing time and it was challenging with the requirement to carry in water. Thought I'd highly recommend it.

Keet Seel has been on the list for quite a while. Just haven't gotten around to it. I thought it required a guide. If it's protected in some way I might do a video on it. If not, you're right. I've learned to not explain where Native American ruins are unless they're either really well known or protected in some manner. Edit: This comment actually reminded me to private one of my older videos....

@@JerryArizona when we went there was an orientation required with reservation at the visitor center. There's a guide stationed at the site and there was a 20 person maximum per day I believe it was.
I will definitely be doing this one! What time of year were you here? I'd assume monsoon season would be a bad idea... which is when I'd be attempting...

We went a couple weeks ago. Mid june. There definitely aren’t many escape routes once you get in there if the weather turns south. 3mm wetsuits (which we had but didn’t wear) would’ve made it more enjoyable. One of my favorite ‘Easy’ technical canyons in zion
Did you guys get another 4Runner? I notice these things as I have one too, ‘19 Pro. I recall a darker color that Tina used to drive. When is the next adventure in AZ? Your guys are in Zion a lot 👍

Yeah, she had a grey one, but stepped up with a new 4Runner a few months back. I still have my Tacoma. Definitely planning to get back out again this weekend.
Are you able to determine issues with algae blooms prior to going? Seems likely that you cannot avoid going under the water or possibly needing extra drinking water (treatable) along the way. You can always ask for details at the back country office when picking up permits. Or read up on beta to find out where there are springs that are safe. Nowadays I just assume any creek water in Zion is suspect. When we did the Subway, I knew of a couple reliable springs. When we did Orderville I just carried all my water. You'd probably be safe towards where the creek starts running, but I prefer to be absolutely sure, so I brought my own.

@@bobito8048 beta is just basically a report on a hike, route, climb, etc. For canyons, I'll just Google the name and it'll pull up websites with information on the route. Usually Ropewiki or some similar site. I'll use that to get a feel for what to expect, mark the route on my gps, etc.

I am not a fan of flash floods while I'm in a slot canyon. 1% chance of rain this day and it only sprinkled a couple times. Still looked foreboding the entire trip. We were taking our time and got through the canyon in about 7 1/2 hours. Gaia says it was 16.5 miles, but that seems long to me.

You can go in from the Narrows bottom up....maybe a half a mile? Not sure exactly. That 'waterfall' section close to where we met the narrows is where most of the day hikers turn around. (Although sometimes if there's a log/rope there like this trip, people climb up and go further in.) It would be tough with a camera and tripod. I'd recommend a dry bag or canyon keg for the camera just in case. But you can definitely get into some very photogenic sections that way.
Love Orderville! It was my first technical canyon, had so much fun doing it. Weird question but is Tina wearing neoprene pants? If so, what brand?

They’re not neoprene, just regular hiking tights. Towards the end I put on a neoprene jacket because I was freezing. Had a full wetsuit in my pack that I soon regretted not putting on before I got wet. Lesson learned the hard way 🥴

@@pbinsb3437 I wore neoprene socks and my regular hiking shoes (Altra Olympus 4). If you are doing Orderville Canyon on your trip in October, I HIGHLY recommend a full wetsuit along with the neoprene socks. There are a couple of swims, and you’ll need it. If you’re only doing The Narrows, it may not be necessary (depending on how far up you go and the water flow). I suggest checking conditions right before your trip, and plan accordingly. Enjoy your trip! Zion is amazing!

This trip was on GoPro 9. Just upgraded to the 11 and also use a Canon EOSR, but not for technical canyons like this.
Just FYI to anyone watching this. There are multiple rescues every year costing tax payers thousands of dollars for people who jump into pools in this canyon.

Very good observation. I read that and we jumped at the one spot.....but only after watching the group that passed us there successfully make the jump. Otherwise, we would have sent one person down first to confirm the water was clear of boulders and deep enough, or not jumped at all.

Not too long. You can walk maybe a half mile up the canyon from the Narrows. Most people turn around at the waterfall, but we saw some people who made it up past that even.

@@jacobgates1986 we saw one other group in the technical section. It obviously picked up as you got close to the narrows, but even being a weekend the narrows weren’t that bad.

I can't. There's a couple spots that 3 out of the 4 of us couldn't down climb. I recommend going in the Narrows and going up the canyon as far as you're comfortable. That way you won't get stuck.

You don't. I actually don't think Zion allows guides. However, you do need experience and gear for technical canyoneering if you want to do the top down route we took. If not, you can go in from the bottom from the Zion Narrows. Just walk up Orderville until you come to an obstacle you can't climb, then turn around. You won't see the entire canyon, but you'll still see some beautiful parts. Some people turn around at the 'waterfall' in the video, others make it up a bit further.
